6963. Lita Ford - Betrayal

Image
From: Wicked Wonderland ; Year: 2009; Genre: Metal Just been in a mood today and felt like something from Lita Ford for some reason. Apparently she has stated her dislike for this entire album for wotever reason, but I like the extra heaviness and her amazing shredding on the guitar.     Hear Betrayal on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Midnight Oil - Read About It     My song pick 2 years ago today: Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge - Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends     My song pick 3 years ago today: Meat Loaf - Hot Patootie -- Bless My Soul   My song pick 4 years ago today: Cutting Crew - (I Just) Died In Your Arms   My song pick 5 years ago today: Brass Construction - Movin'   My song pick 6 years ago today: Motörhead - Shine   My song pick 7 years ago today: Hawkwind - Chaos Army/Horn of Destiny   My song pick 8 years ago today: Rainbow - Man on the Silver Mountain My song...

6961. Explorers Club - Raising the Mammoth 2: AKA Prog-o-matic - Gigantipithicus

Image
From: Raising the Mammoth ; Year: 2002; Genre: Progressive Metal/Symphonic Metal  This will be the last Explorers Club song I will be picking; only because I have already chosen ever other song from the band/project. Oh well, still got material from Trent Gardner's main band, Magellan to choose from.  This is the epic 21 minute instrumental extravaganza that closes this concept record out; an excellent piece to do so, indeed.    Hear the full album on YouTube. (Part 2 starts just after the 38 minute mark)        My song pick 1 year ago today: Red Rider - Power (Strength in Numbers)     My song pick 2 years ago today: Billy Squier - The Stroke     My song pick 3 years ago today: Marcus Miller - Be My Love   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 1983... 6933. Liam Lynch - United States of Whatever

Image
From: Fake Songs ; Year: 2002; Genre: Punk Rock/Comedy It's been 19 years now and am finally getting around to picking something from Liam Lynch; should've some time ago, eh?  This is probably his best-known song as far as I am aware; he is much more prevalent in television and other film media and apparently does the majority of his work there. The whole funny "attitude song" is really wot makes it as great as it is, but it can get old quite fast if played too much.   Hear United States of Whatever on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire feat. The Emotions - Boogie Wonderland     My song pick 2 years ago today: Nina Simone - Pirate Jenny (The Black Freighter)     My song pick 3 years ago today: Smash Mouth - Walkin' On the Sun   My song pick 4 years ago today: Fairport Convention - No Man's Land   My song pick 5 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Goin' Through the Motions   My song pic...

6912. Bon Jovi - Undivided

Image
From: Bounce ; Year: 2002; Genre: Rock Difficult to believe that it was 25 years ago that Bounce was released, which was the last full album by Bon Jovi that I still like to this day. Also, being that it was released a couple of months after my wife and I married, and her being a big Bon Jovi fan made it quite memorable.     Hear Undivided on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice     My song pick 2 years ago today: Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs - May I     My song pick 3 years ago today: Alley Pat - Pat's Rubber Band   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Doors - Love Street   My song pick 5 years ago today: Benny Carter - Cotton Tail   My song pick 6 years ago today: Mr. Big - Defying Gravity   My song pick 7 years ago today: Rush - Double Agent My song pick 8 years ago today: Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs - Sugar Shack ...

6889. Racer X - Lucifer's Hammer

Image
From: Getting Heavier ; Year 2002; Genre: Power Metal Started listening to Racer X again the other day; it has been fun to once again acquaint myself with their music. The technicality combined with the full-on power metal story-driven music/subject matter really works well.   Hear Lucifer's Hammer on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Jim & Ingrid Croce - What the Hell     My song pick 2 years ago today: The O'Jays - The Year 2000     My song pick 3 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Fire   My song pick 4 years ago today: Los Bravos - Going Nowhere   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Kinks - You Can't Stop The Music   My song pick 6 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - The World Keeps On Turning   My song pick 7 years ago today: Soundgarden - Slaves & Bulldozers My song pick 8 years ago today: Pearl Jam - Daughter My song pick 9 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Don't Follow My song ...

6886. "Weird Al" Yankovic - Bob

Image
From: Poodle Hat ; Year: 2003; Genre: Folk Rock/Comedy Noticed that today's pick number, 6886, is, of course a numerical palindrome , so I decided I should choose something appropriate. This "Weird Al" song is an "in the style of" type of his music; this time it was the titular "Bob" Dylan in the mid-'60s, although he does reference a couple of his songs in particular. Every lyric line is in the form of a palindrome throughout, and, of course Al, being the maven he is, does his best both lyrically and musically.   Watch the music video on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Four Tops - 7 Rooms of Gloom     My song pick 3 years ago today: Spacehog - Zeroes   My song pick 4 years ago today: Carmen - Retirando   My song pick 5 years ago today: George Clinton - Last Dance My song pick 6 years ago today: Marillion - Cover My Eyes (Pain in Heaven)   My...

6878. Aimee Mann - Red Vines

Image
From Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo ; Year: 2000; Genre: Rock/Pop Had some music from the band 'Till Tuesday, which Aimee Mann fronted before finding even more success as a solo artist. Have chosen some tracks from various bands she collaborated with as well as 'Till Tuesday, but nothing from her solo works... so I'm taking care of that now. It is difficult to believe that it has been 26 years now since this song and album were released, as they say: Tempus Fugit .     Hear Red Vines on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Pearls Before Swine - Rocket Man     My song pick 2 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Break the Chain     My song pick 3 years ago today: The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby   My song pick 4 years ago today: Primus - American Life   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Lap of Luxury   My song pick 6 years ago today: Mr. Bungle - Egg   My song p...

6836. Porcupine Tree - My Ashes

Image
From: Fear of a Blank Planet ; Year: 2009; Genre: Progressive Rock This album was playing in my mind last night and this morning, which is a very good thing; a lot of amazing music to bounce around one's skull. This is a nice, shorter, (if you can call five-minutes short, right?), piece of music that has a very heavy, maudlin feeling to it; very beautiful.    Hear My Ashes on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - America     My song pick 2 years ago today: Edgar Winter - Tobacco Road     My song pick 3 years ago today: The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'   My song pick 4 years ago today: Eddie Grant - Electric Avenue   My song pick 5 years ago today: Melvins - The Mechanical Bride   My song pick 6 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Little Gandy Dancer   My song pick 7 years ago today: Rush - War Paint My song pick 8 years ago today: Cr...

6834. Band of Horses - Marry Song

Image
From: Cease to Begin ; Year: 2007; Genre: Blues Rock/Indie Rock Other than having music from this album on my mind I have no reason for this pick; I like this song and album too, I suppose.     Hear Marry Song on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Edgar Winter's White Trash - I Got News for You     My song pick 2 years ago today: Billie Holiday and Her Orchestra - Them There Eyes     My song pick 3 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Chevrolet   My song pick 4 years ago today: Eddie Rabbitt - 747   My song pick 5 years ago today: B.J. 6828. Rush - Hope

Image
From: Snakes & Arrows ; Year: 2007; Genre: Folk Rock After watching some recent interviews with the two surviving members of the band I thought that I would revisit Snakes & Arrows once again. Still, it is difficult for me to comprehend that Neil Peart is gone... but a least Alex and Geddy are about to embark on a tour with Anika Nilles filling in on drums. Anyway, this is one of the three instrumental songs on this record and, if I remember correctly, when I saw them live for their tour promoting it, it was one of a handful of tracks they'd play whilst Neil rested after one of his epic drum solos. Whilst being a brief piece, Alex Lifeson, on his 12-string guitar really plays his heart out on it.   Hear Hope on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Grateful Dead - Shakedown Street     My song pick 2 years ago today: Boston - To Be a Man   My song pick 3 years ago today: George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars - T.A.P.O.A....

6813. The Delgados - I Fought the Angels

Image
From: Universal Audio ; Year: 2004; Genre: Indie Rock Songs from the defunct Scottish indie rock band the Delgados happened to randomly come on over the last week or so, you know wot that means. Anyway, this is one I thought I had already chosen, but evidentially not. I Fought the Angels has always been one of my to favourites from their final record. It has a low-fidelity sound and I have read where people compare this track to the general sound of The Pixies, which I can hear, but there is a lot more to it in my opinion.   Hear I Fought the Angels on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Five Stairsteps - World of Fantasy     My song pick 2 years ago today: Bonnie Tyler - Here She Comes   My song pick 3 years ago today: Kajagoogoo - Hang on Now   My song pick 4 years ago today: Link Wray - I Got To Ramble (Dedicated to the Memory of Duane Allman)   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Thermals - Back to the Sea   My so...

6794. Rob Zombie - The Devil's Rejects

Image
From: Educated Horses ; Year: 2006; Genre: Alternative Metal Since I've been watching a lot of Rob Zombie movies lately I thought I would pick one more of his songs. This one is the namesake and seems to be about the film he released one year prior. Describing each of the main three of the Firefly family with a great grinding groove that is both unnerving and gives you the urge to dance; such a great tune.   Hear The Devil's Rejects on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Stray Cats - Rock This Town     My song pick 2 years ago today: UB40 - Please Don't Make Me Cry   My song pick 3 years ago today: Debbie Harry - Chrome   My song pick 4 years ago today: Funkadelic - Maggot Brain   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jim Steinman - Left in the Dark   My song pick 6 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Flat Broke Love   My song pick 7 years ago today: 4 Non Blondes - Spaceman My song pick 8 years ago tod...

6777. Blue Öyster Cult - I Just Like To Be Bad

Image
From: Curse of the Hidden Mirror ; Year: 2001; Genre: Hard Rock Decided on picking a song off of this album, which is by some considered to be one of the band's weakest releases. Truthfully, I have never really listened to it much, so I really have no firm opinion thus far. This track, which has a "cheeky" title, is quite similar to their normal work, so, I would probably have guessed it was BÖC just hearing it randomly.   Hear I Just Like To Be Bad on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Jeff Wayne, Richard Burton, Chris Thompson - Thunder Child     My song pick 2 years ago today: Cameo - Funk Funk   My song pick 3 years ago today: Genesis - Tonight, Tonight, Tonight   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - Strange Encounters   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Space for the Earth   My song pick 6 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - For Once In My Life   My song pick 7 years ago today: Dayton Sid...

6747. Elmer & Brenda Parker and The Nite Lighters - Got To Get Back To Louisiana Pt. 2

Image
From: Movements 2 ; Year: 2006; Genre: Funk/Soul Thinking about choosing something from Tobias Kirmayer's Movements series of deep funk and soul cuts. This one seems to be among the rarer songs from the compilations; all I can really find out about it is that it was recorded at the end of the 1960 and released in either '70 or '71. He really did a service to us fans of these obscure and forgotten tracks; apparently an original 45rpm single runs upward of $90 plus as far as I can tell. Anyway, if you like some real raw, unfiltered funk this one will be right up your alleyway. Don't be surprised if you start moving to this groove; some amazing drumming and bass and then some.   Hear Got to Get Myself Back to Louisiana Pt. 2 on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Three Dog Night - Chest Fever     My song pick 2 years ago today: Them - Gloria   My song pick 3 years ago today: Vince Guaraldi - Red Baron   My song pick 4 years ago tod...

6737. Rush - Crossroads

Image
From: Feedback ; Year: 2004; Genre: Blues Rock/Hard Rock I cannot even begin to count the amount of times I have said "I thought for sure I picked this song already" or something similar, but I am stating that once again and probably will many more times.... Had this album of cover songs from Rush on my mind and had another track in mind, however, when I noticed this one was not chosen as of yet, I jumped at it. This is of course a cover of pure piece of Americana music as deep into the very soul of it as it gets. Originally written and recorded by the great musical titan Robert Johnson back in the 1930s and played, recorded, inspired and loved by Bluesmen, Blueswomen, and every musician who plays music even slightly related to that foundational genre. Rush's cover though, is a direct cover of the classic hard blues rock rendition by Cream. Whilst it is a great cover and the musicianship and overall ability is out-of-this-world by Peart, Lifeson, and Lee, in my personal ...

6726. Bob Dylan - Thunder on the Mountain

Image
From: Modern Times ; Year: 2006; Genre: Rock 'n Roll/Rockabilly I wanted to pick something related to Valentine's Day, and this track in fact does have a major connection to the holiday, so bear with me. Okay, so, in the past I really wasn't one that cared for Valentine's Day; just seemed too commercial and felt like one of those occasions where society seemingly punishes the lonely people who hadn't a "sweetheart." Make them feel like outcasts and unloved, etc. Well, a few years ago I discovered that this holiday on which the martyrdom of  Saint Valentine  is marked, happened on the Roman festival of Lupercalia , which contained some rites of fertility and such. Of course the Feast of St. Valentine has been observed for many, many centuries since. However, I happened to discover the genesis of wot you could call the more secular aspects, which began with Geoffrey Chaucer , who is known as both the Father of English Literature and Poetry, in his 14th Centu...

6721. 3 Doors Down - Let Me Go

Image
From: Seventeen Days ; Year: 2005; Genre: Alternative Rock It has been a weird year thus far; many deaths occurring from music's past. However, whilst I've never really followed the band closely, this one has had a unique impact on myself with having someone so close to my age pass away.  Enough about that now; as you probably surmised and already know, Brad Arnold, singer/songwriter for 3 Doors Down lost his battle with cancer. I thought I'd pick one of the band's songs that I remember from back in the day.   Hear Let Me Go on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - The Tipu House     My song pick 2 years ago today: Mr. Bungle - Stub (A Dub)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Lou Rawls - See You When I Git There   My song pick 4 years ago today: Barenaked Ladies - Internal Dynamo   My song pick 5 years ago today: Herbie Hancock - Vein Melter   My song pick 6 years ago today: Steve Vai - The Blood & ...

6693. Bob Weir and Rat Dog - Bury Me Standing

Image
From: Evening Moods ; Year: 2000; Genre: Blues Rock Sadly, we lost yet another musical legend: Bob Weir. He was one of those who you could not just qualify his as just a songwriter, singer and guitarist; his footprint on music for the last 70+ years has just been too great. That being said, his name will forever be as synonymous with the Grateful Dead as the late-great Jerry Garcia, even though his career spanned so many solo and collaborative works.   Hear Bury Me Standing on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Sugarloaf - Green-Eyed Lady     My song pick 2 years ago today: Brass Construction - Goodnews   My song pick 3 years ago today: Beck, Bogert & Appice - Sweet Sweet Surrender   My song pick 4 years ago today: Alice Cooper - Wish You Were Here   My song pick 5 years ago today: Return to Forever - The Musician   My song pick 6 years ago today: Rush - Superconductor   My song pick 7 years ago today: Eddie ...
