6204. Bob Welch - Sentimental Lady

Image
From: French Kiss ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock/Pop Happened to be thinking about how it has been almost exactly some 12 years since Bob Welch's passing and I figured it'd be a great time to pick another of his songs. Whilst it was originally recorded about five years prior on Fleetwood Mac's Bare Trees album at the time he had one of the lead roles with the band, it only got its big success on his first solo record following the demise of his band Paris. Interestingly enough, most of Fleetwood Mac at the time accompanied him on this re-recording with both Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham adding a lot to it both musically and lending their vocal talents.   Hear Sentimental Lady on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rare Earth - What'd I Say   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - In Brief Visitation   My song pick 3 years ago today: Geddy Lee - Slipping   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Sweet - Hell Raiser   My song pic...

5896. Bob Welch - I'll Dance Alone

Image
From: Eye Contact ; Year: 1983; Genre: New Wave/Rock Felt like hearing some of Bob Welch's solo material this morning; something from his album that marked his early retirement, which lasted about a decade and a half. It is kind of odd, but very interesting to hear him venture so far into the world of synth being that he was such a classic rock mainstay making his mark in other bands with instantly recognizable hits throughout his career. Anyway, I'll Dance Alone is, as stated, more in the direction of new wave, which was a quite popular mainstream form at the time, so mayhap he was trying to reinvent himself or it could be just the direction he felt pulled in at the time. Whatever the case, it's a fun song to have on whilst going about your day.   Hear I'll Dance Alone on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Headstones - S.O.S.   My song pick 2 years ago today: Maxine Nightingale - Right Back Where We Started From   My song pick 3 years ago tod...

5736. Fleetwood Mac - Bermuda Triangle

Image
From: Heroes are Hard to Find ; Year: 1974; Genre: Blues Rock February seemed to really fly by this year, which is good, I am in need of spring. Anyway, for no real reason I felt like going over some music from Fleetwood Mac. Heroes are Hard to Find is one of those albums that doesn't seem to get a lot of love from the band's fan base. Consisting of nine songs written and sung by both the late-great Christine McVie and Bob Welch whilst the band was going through a real rough patch, some of the tracks just don't seem to fit. It's almost like two solo albums by McVie and Welch with John McVie and Mick Fleetwood backing them. Bermuda Triangle really exemplifies this in my opinion; it sounds similar to some the music from his solo work and also with his band Paris .   Hear Bermuda Triangle on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Charlie Daniels - Robot Romp   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Offspring - Hammerhead   My song pick 3 years ago tod...

5481. Bob Welch - Church

Image
From: Three Hearts ; Year: 1979; Genre: Rock/Pop I have no idea why I had Bob Welch's music on my mind today, but it is odd that I would since about a month ago it was 10 years since his tragic passing. I've always liked his music, especially with the band Paris and his later solo efforts, which I believe Three Hearts was his second record as a solo artist. This track in particular reminds me a lot of the music he wrote and performed as the frontman for Fleetwood Mac years earlier; it makes it very familiar and inviting to some who are accustomed to that sound.   Hear Church on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Hawkwind - Starshine   My song pick 2 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Milky Way   My song pick 3 years ago today: Smokey Robinson and The Miracles - Tracks Of My Tears My song pick 4 years ago today: Blancmange - Living on the Ceiling My song pick 5 years ago today: Dick Dale and his Del Tones - The Wedge My song ...

5064. Paris - Janie

Image
From: Big Towne, 2061 ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock This is actually a pretty cool one with a lot of neat musical ideas and instrumentation, which in my opinion borders almost toward progressive rock.     Hear Janie on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Rush - The Stars Look Down   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bob Welch - Outskirts My song pick 3 years ago today: Jerry Reed - Take It Easy (In Your Mind) My song pick 4 years ago today: Sammy Hagar - Heavy Metal My song pick 5 years ago today: Return to Forever - Flight of the Newborn My song pick 6 years ago today: Hawkwind - Choose Your Masques My song pick 7 years ago today: Rush - Force Ten My song pick 8 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Someday Never Comes My song pick 9 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Time My song pick 10 years ago today: Rammstein - Amerika My song pick 11 years ago today: Cream - White Room My song pick 12 years ago today: Ste...

4327. Bob Welch - Outskirts

Image
From: French Kiss ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock I think I've said it before, but this is probably one of my top favourite of the albums that Bob Welch recorded; there's a lot of good music, and this is among the best of the record. 4255. Paris - Heart of Stone

Image
From: Big Towne, 2061 ; Year: 1976; Genre: Hard Rock Kind of just picking a random song today; nothing really on my mind at the moment. 4207. Fleetwood Mac - For Your Love

Image
From: Mystery to Me ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock For Your Love is of course a cover of the song made famous by The Yardbirds, and I like the way they arranged it as well as Bob Welch's lead vocals. 4007. Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees

Image
From: Bare Trees ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock I remember growing hearing a lot of this brand of rock. It wasn't focused on one or two hit singles, but rather the entire album was conceived, written, and arranged as to be one album of songs meant to put the needle down and listen to it in its entirety; it definitely was musical bliss. Anyway, here's the title-track from one album that fits the description of "album oriented rock" for sure. Hear Bare Trees on YouTube. 3619. Fleetwood Mac - Emerald Eyes

Image
From: Mystery to Me ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock When thinking as to which song I was to pick today; Fleetwood Mac's Mystery to Me album kind of got stuck in my mind. I think I've said it before, but this is one of the band's most underrated and forgotten albums with some real good music on it. This is the first track and very much welcomes you in with that 70's rock sound that would make them famous. Hear Emerald Eyes on YouTube. 3383. Paris - Blue Robin

Image
From: Big Towne, 2061 ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Hard Rock For about a week now I've had a bunch of Bob Welch's music on my mind, so I thought it would be a good choice on this Saturday. This is the opening track from the second and final album of the supergroup Paris. It's not the best song on the album, but it's definitely an attention getter and a good straight up hard rocker. 3101. Bob Welch - Hot Love, Cold World

Image
From: French Kiss ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock The hard back-beat and the funky bass line are two of the biggest draws in this one for me in this lesser hit from Mr. Welch's debut solo album. It's unquestionably in his typical style that's always a treat to the ears. Hear Hot Love, Cold World on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears My song pick two years ago today: UFO - Too Hot To Handle My song pick three years ago today: Stratovarius - Chasing Shadows My song pick four years ago today: The Beatles - Back in the U.S.S.R. 2784 Paris - 1 in 10

Image
From: Big Towne, 2061 , Year: 1976; Genre: Rock Going random today with my pick and came up with this rather hard and funky track from Bob Welch's short-lived but ever so bright power trio Paris. This music just goes down easy, there's really no other way to describe it; just plays well in many situations, but I happen to prefer headphones. Hear 1 in 10 on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Jethro Tull - Look Into the Sun My song pick two years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Free Wheelin' My song pick three years ago today: Rush - Limbo My song pick four years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Superstition My song pick five years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Soul To Squeeze My song pick six years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra - Fire On High My song pick seven years ago today: The Polyphonic Spree - It's The Sun

2489 Fleetwood Mac - The Ghost

Image
From: Bare Trees ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock This is a neat track from the Bob Welch/Larry Kirwan era of Fleetwood Mac. It contains a lot of cool musical ideas thrown into this rather bluesy tune; it's quite a lot of fun to listen to. Hear The Ghost on YouTube. 2470 Paris - Starcage

Image
From: Paris ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock I was thinking about the song to pick today and after considering a couple of others I came up with this one; this is one of the better songs on Paris' debut album. Hear Starcage on YouTube. 2226 Paris - Red Rain

Image
From: Paris ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock For no reason whatsoever I felt like picking something from Paris this morning. I haven't picked anything off of their first album yet; I've actually picked two from the band thus far off of the second record. It's neat hearing Bob Welch's music just after leaving Fleetwood Mac; the rest of the power trio forms out with Glenn Cornick on bass and Thom Mooney on drums.  Hear Red Rain on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Destiny Calls My song pick two years ago today: The Who - Going Mobile My song pick three years ago today: Louis Armstrong - The Blues are Brewin' My song pick four years ago today: The Beatles - Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End My song pick five years ago today: Bruce Hornsby & the Range - The Way It Is My song pick six years ago today: The Charlie Daniels Band - In America

2180 Fleetwood Mac - Come a Little Bit Closer

Image
From: Heroes Are Hard to Find ; Year: 1974; Genre: Rock The other day I was listening to a lot of music from Fleetwood Mac's Heroes Are Hard to Find album; this track in particular got a lot of replay. The music and the arrangements are excellent and Christine McVie's vocals just add to that excellence. One of my favourite aspects of this track was the addition of "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow's pedal steel guitar. Hear Come a Little Bit Closer on YouTube. 1829 Paris - Pale Horse, Pale Rider

Image
From: Big Towne, 2061 ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock Ever since his suicide a couple of months ago I've been getting more and more into Bob Welch's music. Before his death I was a definite fan of his music, I just guess that since it happened I've been more appreciative of what he left behind. Anyway, this one comes from his band Paris, which was one of his post Fleetwood Mac bands. It's a pretty straight-forward song; at times this one reminds me just a wee bit of Santana musically. Hear Pale Horse, Pale Rider on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Stuart Hamm - Simple Dreams My song pick two years ago today: Albert Hammond - It Never Rains In Southern California My song pick three years ago today: Band of Horses - Islands on the Coast My song pick four years ago today: Jim Croce - Roller Derby Queen +

1766 Fleetwood Mac - Hypnotized

Image
From: Mystery to Me ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock I'm picking yet another song written by the recently-deceased guitarist and singer Bob Welch. For the last couple of days, ever since hearing about his death, I've been going over the music he wrote and performed. I figured I would pick this jazzy tune with a nice groove for this Saturday; I absolutely love the mood this song creates along with the surreal lyrics and Mr. Welch's delivery of them. This was one of the hits from Fleetwood Mac during the Welch era and should be recognizable even to those who aren't really into the band; even to this day it gets a bit of radio play. Hear Hypnotized on YouTube. Here is a Bob Welch solo performance of the song featuring Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on YouTube. 1765 Fleetwood Mac (Bob Welch) - Sentimental Lady

Image
From: Bare Trees ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock Yesterday I heard on the radio that, sadly, Bob Welch died from an apparent suicide ; from what I have heard he was suffering from some health issues. I've always been a fan of Bob Welch and his music, even before I knew it was him that performed the songs I heard. Just like me, many others might not know about him, but have heard his music as well. He is mostly known for his stint with Fleetwood Mac after Peter Green left and just before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined. While he didn't see as much success with Fleetwood Mac as they did or get the accolades, he was every bit as good. I, personally remember hearing most of his music from either his "supergroup" Paris or from his subsequent solo career in particular. His solo career was doing well at the time I was young and listened to the radio a lot, thus I ended up hearing his music a lot. While I'm not a big fan of this song in particular, I thought...
