William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: Cherished ; Year: 1976; Genre: Pop/Rock Recently I have discovered that I personally gravitate towards Cher's solo work over her work with others, i.e. her ex-husband Sonny Bono and such. There just seems to be more substance or "meat" on the bones, if you will, of her solo music when I listen to it both music and vocally/lyrically.   Hear Pirate on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rush - Available Light   My song pick 2 years ago today: The O'Jays - For the Love of Money   My song pick 3 years ago today: R.E.O. From: Half-Breed ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock Been a crazy, busy weekend and finally getting around to making today's pick. Had some of Cher's music come on while out and about and thought I'd choose one more of her songs. Gosh, I cannot remember the last time I hear this track, but it's definitely been a while. With the backing of the great Wrecking Crew , Cher seemed like she couldn't fail with her powerful and emotive vocals. Whilst using non-correct imagery and not quite factual statements about Cherokee culture in the song, it's great to hear a song celebrating us mixed and mutts.   Hear Half-Breed on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Robert Knight - Everlasting Love   My song pick 2 year2 ago today: Parliament - What Comes Funky   My song pick 3 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Grind   My song pick 4 years ago today: Gloryhammer - The Fires of Ancient Cosmic Destiny My song pick 5 years ago today: Dave Edmunds - Girls Talk My son...

From: Mama Was a Rock and Roll Singer, Papa Used to Write All Her Songs ; Year:1973; Genre: Rock/Pop I have no reason whatsoever why I'm choosing another song from Sonny and Cher, but they were on my mind when sitting down to write this post, so there's your reason I suppose. Anyway, this is kind of an interesting piece of music; over the almost 10 minutes of its play time it transitions between many different styles of pop music. Some of it is their brand of bubblegum pop, other parts remind me a wee bit of the Beatles, and others somewhat similar to Elton John, well, at least to my ears anyway. From: In Case You're In Love ; Year: 1967; Genre: Pop/Rock For a top 40 "pop" tune this one's got a lot of interesting musical ideas throughout. The group known as The Wrecking Crew , (also known by other names backed Sonny and Cher on the studio recording), did an awesome job pulling this song together. Hear The Beat Goes On on YouTube. From: Dark Lady ; Year: 1974; Genre: Rock/Pop I woke up this morning with this track running through my mind and, like I normally do, I am making it my pick today. This is probably one of my favourites from Cher; it's got great music and tells a short tale to boot about love, betrayal, murder, and of course a gypsy fortune teller.
