6848. The United States of America - Where Is Yesterday

Image
From: The United States of America ; Year: 1968; Genre: Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Rock Very odd, but as of late I have been hearing about this short-lived experimental rock band a bit once again. I've always liked them since discovering the band quite a few years ago, but I've never been huge into their music.  They only lasted about one year and only made a single album, but every member went on to much greater things. The astounding talent within it really was its downfall; "too many chefs and not enough cooks," so to speak. The musical differences and strong, differing directions I suppose led to the fate. However, despite all of this, some have been looking back and finally seeing the true cutting edge musical ideas and implementation thereof; better late than never, eh?   Hear Where Is Yesterday on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Cranberries - Sunday     My song pick 2 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Vorpal Laserblaster...

6297. Lou Rawls and Desirée Goyette - You Can Never Find An Elf When You Need One

Image
From: A Garfield Christmas Special ; Year: 1987; Genre: Jazz Alright, am now making a concerted effort to get in a more "merry" mood this year. This one was kind of a short "showstopper" for the '87 Garfield Christmas Special and in my opinion the best of the soundtrack. Sadly though, they apparently never released an actual soundtrack for it, unlike with other ones. I can say, it does bring back a lot of memories always marking the day of the broadcast and hearing and seeing the sound of the CBS Special announcement. Even after all these years the work of Lou Rawls, Desirée Goyette, and Ed Bogas is as great as ever; simply timeless in their effort/performance.   Hear You Can Never Find An Elf When You Need One on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: James Brown And The Famous Flames - Merry Christmas Baby   My song pick 2 years ago today: Styx - Just Get Through This Night   My song pick 3 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Someday At Christmas ...

6260. The Innocent Bystanders - Winston

Image
From: Fritz the Cat (Soundtrack) ; Year: 1972; Genre: Soul/Funk/Rock Today is a Funky Friday, but for some reason I had the music of Ed Bogas on the brain, so I went ahead and perused the soundtracks he composed. And of course, the Fritz the Cat soundtrack was an obvious choice. Now, I noted that this song was recorded by some band call The Innocent Bystanders, however, internet searches are pure desolation except for two bands with similar names that have formed way after 1972, so they apparently cannot be the ones who laid down this track. Whatever the case, it was written and produced by Ed Bogas and is a fun one to rock out and dance along with.   Hear Winston on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Van Halen - Eruption/You Really Got Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: Fear Factory featuring Gary Numan - Cars   My song pick 3 years ago today: UB40 - (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - High...

3065. The United States of America - Stranded in Time

Image
From: The United States of America ; Year: 1967; Genre: Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Rock I noticed yet another band that I've only picked one song from, and that was quite a while ago; I really should just make a theme out of this if I keep doing it. In this shorter track you can hear a great deal of Beatles influence, especially from the vocal harmonies and string arrangements. But the song is still quite unique, especially after the second section kicks in. Hear Stranded in Time on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Boston - Can'tcha Say (Believe in Me)/Still in Love My song pick two years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Dreams I'll Never See My song pick three years ago today: Miles Davis - Straight, No Chaser My song pick four years ago today: Triumph - Hold On My song pick five years ago today: Jack Black and Jason Segel - The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth My song pick six years ago today: John Denver - Poems, Prayers and Promises My son...

2772 Lou Rawls - Long 'Bout Midnight

Image
From: Here Comes Garfield (Soundtrack) ; Year: 1982; Genre: Funk/Jazz I was watching a bunch of old Garfield cartoons, including this one, and this rather funky song kept kept getting stuck in my mind; I thought it would make a great Funky Friday pick. For those who grew up in the 1980s Garfield was one of the most loved cartoon characters and this was part of the soundtrack from his first animated picture. The entire soundtrack was written by the incomparable Ed Bogas and sung by both legendary singer Lou Rawls and Desirée Goyette. This is one of the highlights to feature Lou Rawls' amazing vocals and is a very funky and fun song to listen to. Hear Long 'Bout Midnight on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Temptations - Ain't Too Proud to Beg My song pick two years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Roll On Down the Highway My song pick three years ago today: Pallas - Ark of Infinity My song pick four years ago today: Herb Alpert & th...

1314 Ed Bogas & Merl Saunders - The Riot

Image
1314 Ed Bogas & Merl Saunders - The Riot From: Fritz the Cat Soundtrack, Year: 1972 Getting another Funky Friday pick in today with this instrumental piece. Over the last little bit I've been doing a little research into all of the projects composer/musician Ed Bogas has been in; I knew that he worked on quite a few movie and television soundtracks over the years. Anyway, this was one of his earlier soundtrack recordings that came from the satirical and rather vulgar adult cartoon: Fritz the Cat . As many probably know, or maybe don't know, Ed Bogas would later do the music for another, and much more popular, cartoon cat: Garfield . The soundtrack for Fritz the Cat is simply an excellent collection of music for anyone who likes: Soul, Funk, R&B, or related genres. I was somewhat surprised when I was able to find some of the songs on YouTube. Hear the studio recording with album cover on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: J. S. Bach - Prelude and F...

1241 The United States of America - The Garden of Earthly Delights

Image
1241 The United States of America - The Garden of Earthly Delights In the mood for something different and weird this morning. This one comes from the short-lived Psychedelic/Progressive/Experimental/Electronic Rock band: The United States of America; not to be confused with the popular Folk/Rock band America . The band broke up shortly after the release of their self-titled debut album for apparently a variety of reasons. When I first found out about the band and album one member's name in particular stuck out: Ed Bogas. For those who do not immediately recognize that name there is a very good chance you have heard his music. He has written the scores and music for many films, television shows, and video games over the years. If you watched the Garfield and/or Peanuts cartoons back in the '80s you definitely have heard his material. I remember back when I was playing video games on my old Commodore 64 I saw his name pop up quite a bit in the credits, especially in the Accol...
