William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: Cookin' on the Roof ; Year: 1983; Genre: Pop/Rock/Swing This often overlooked and underappreciated '80s swing/rock/new wave group happens to be on my mind since yesterday, so I'm picking another one of their songs. This one will make you feel like dancing without a doubt.   Hear Furs 'n High Heels on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Dio - Hide in the Rainbow     My song pick 2 years ago today: Waylon Jennings - Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - Love City   My song pick 4 years ago today: Billy Joel - Don't Ask Me Why   My song pick 5 years ago today: R.E.M. - Man on the Moon   My song pick 6 years ago today: Brook Benton - Rainy Night in Georgia My song pick 7 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Way Out of Here My song pick 8 years ago today: Cyndi Lauper - All Through The Night My song pick 9 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central...

From: Intensified ; Year: 1970; Genre: Reggae/Ska Had them come on while driving this morning and thought it was about time I choose another one from Desmond Dekker and his band. As far as I can remember, they were the very first band I ever heard play reggae, ska, or any of the music from the vast Jamaican sound; definitely a legendary act to say the very least.   Hear It Mek on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bob James - Nautilus   My song pick 2 years ago today: War - War Drums   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sam & Dave - You Don't Know Like I Know   My song pick 4 years ago today: Black 47 - Livin' in America   My song pick 5 years ago today: Lenny LeBlanc - Dance Around the Campfire   My song pick 6 years ago today: Georges Bizet - Carmen Overture My song pick 7 years ago today: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Helpless My song pick 8 years ago today: Rose Royce - Car Wash My song pick 9 years ago today: ...

From: Mr. Bungle ; Year: 1991; Genre: Ska/Funk Metal/Progressive Metal Goodness, you really should wear neck protection when listening to this one due the whiplash danger; heck, forget about dancing to it, you'll seriously injure yourself. One of the main aspects I've always loved about Mr. Bungle is that they are all over the place with equal intensity with wotever genre they happen to be playing one second to another. Songs like this one in particular really make me want to know how it was recorded and conceptualized, let alone how they would perform it live; it boggles the mind.... As it is said: there is a thin line between genius and insanity. I suppose dipping your toe across from time to time is fine, but it seems like they took their weekends on the other side of it. 😛   Hear Stub (A Dub) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lou Rawls - See You When I Git There   My song pick 2 years ago today: Barenaked Ladies - Internal Dynamo   My ...

From: Mr. Bungle ; Year: 1991; Genre: Funk Metal/Ska/Metal/Experimental With funk only being one of the many genres within this song I guess it's a stretch to make it my Funky Friday pick, but I'm going to anyway. While it's a very strange track it is loaded down with many genius musical ideas and concepts; Mike Patton and company were at their normal form. Hear My Ass Is On Fire on YouTube. From: Energia! ; Year: 2013; Genre: Power Metal/Ska/Folk Metal This is one that Max introduced me to a while ago, and I happened to remember them today; I should've picked one from them already, better late than never I guess. Anyway, to describe their music it's a type of folk metal made up with a load of ska and a lot of Russian polka influence. A very interesting band to say the least; I love music like this that is something new and on the very edge. Hear Energia! on YouTube. From: Mr. Bungle ; Year: 1991; Genre: Alternative Metal/Ska After seeing and hearing some of Mr. Bungle's material on television the other night it brought the band back into my conscious memory so to speak. One of the bands that, if I remember correctly, showed up a lot on Max's old Song a Day blog that caught my attention; I've always been meaning to pick one from Mr. Bungle, but never got around to it, but I'm rectifying that today. I love how many different sounds and musical ideas went into this song and blended absolutely perfectly. Hear Carousel on YouTube. From: Running with Scissors ; Year: 1999; Genre: Comedy/Third Wave Ska This morning I've had this rather funny song running through my mind, and as usual I thought I would make it my pick today. This happens to be one of "Weird Al's" originals, which features music in the style of bands of the "Third Wave Ska" genre such as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, which is pretty fun to listen to. However, as with most of his material the lyrics are the main draw, and this one has him running down comedic horoscopes for each sign of the zodiac at break-neck speeds.
