6306. Gentle Giant - Memories of Old Days

Image
From: The Missing Piece ; Year: 1977; Genre: Progressive Rock Here's a real pretty and heavy track off of Gentle Giant's 1977 album. You can tell the band was really at a zenith at this point, or close to it; it is just something to hear with it being quite technical and musical, but really easy to sit back and listen to.   Hear Memories of Old Days on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Winery Dogs - Lorelei   My song pick 2 years ago today: Primus - Conspiranoia   My song pick 3 years ago today: Depeche Mode - New Life My song pick 4 years ago today: Yes - Time and a Word My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Commercial Traveler My song pick 6 years ago today: Jefferson Starship - No Way Out My song pick 7 years ago today: Cybotron - Parameters of Consciousness My song pick 8 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - You Better Be Good (Or the Devil Gon' Getcha) My song pick 9 years ago today: Yes - No Opportuni...

5300. Gentle Giant - In a Glass House

Image
From: In a Glass House ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock I finally am again able to play music while driving, so I'm back being in the environment where I'm able to listen to much more music. As you probably surmised, I heard some music from Gentle Giant earlier today whilst on the road and I started to check out more of their music. This, the title track off of the In a Glass House album is an excellent 8+ minute opus of a song with many sections and musical ideas expressed throughout.   Hear In a Glass House on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Telephone Line   My song pick 2 years ago today: King Crimson - Level Five   My song pick 3 years ago today: Parliament - Placebo Syndrome My song pick 4 years ago today: Los Lonely Boys - Heaven My song pick 5 years ago today: Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders - Louise My song pick 6 years ago today: .38 Special - Hold On Loosely My song pick 7 ye...

5120. Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory

Image
From: The Power and the Glory ; Year: 1974; Genre: Progressive Rock Still kind of stuck listening to prog/rock lately, but it is helping me feel somewhat more like listening to music again. This one today I'm visiting is from Gentle Giant; they are definitely a band that deserves more credit and listeners than they seem to get. Whilst it would seem that this song was the title track to the record, but was actually a stand alone single and was apparently not included with album until later releases on compact disc.   Hear The Power and the Glory on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Ennio Morricone - The Ecstasy of Gold   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush - Clockwork Angels My song pick 3 years ago today: The Kinks - Living on a Thin Line My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Slow Marching Band My song pick 5 years ago today: Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - Flight of the Cosmic Hippo My song pick 6 years ago today: Mastodon - Cre...

3859. Gentle Giant - All Through the Night

Image
From: Civilian ; Year: 1980; Genre: Hard Rock First pick of the new month; January sure blew by fast, at least to me. Anyway, on to my pick: This is quite a bit different from the sound you're used to when you think of Gentle Giant; more in-line with the popular sound of the day, but still has their edge to it. Not a bad song at all in its own right. Hear All Through the Night on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Duran Duran - Save a Prayer My song pick two years ago today: Men Without Hats - Safety Dance My song pick three years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - The Saga Begins My song pick four years ago today: The Moody Blues - Ride My See-Saw My song pick five years ago today: Hawkwind - Angela Android My song pick six years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Manic Depression My song pick seven years ago today: Jon Oliva's Pain - Through the Eyes of the King My song pick eight years ago today: Nora Bayes - The Japanese Sandm...

3588. Gentle Giant - Words From The Wise

Image
From: Giant for a Day ; Year: 1978; Genre: Rock Realized that I had not picked one from Gentle Giant for a while now; this somewhat pop departure from the band kind of seemed like a good pick for today. The sound is similar to Electric Light Orchestra in my opinion, which I think was a great juxtaposition of their normal sound. Hear Words From the Wise on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: King Crimson - I Talk to the Wind My song pick two years ago today: Pure Essence - Wake Up, Pts. 1&2 My song pick three years ago today: Eric Clapton (Derek and the Dominoes) - Bell Bottom Blues My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day My song pick five years ago today: Alestorm - I Am a Cider Drinker My song pick six years ago today: Elton John - Lady Samantha My song pick seven years ago today: Nena - 99 Luftballons My song pick eight years ago today: Rainbow - Street of Dreams My song pick nine years ago...

Image
From: Acquiring the Taste ; Year: 1971; Genre: Progressive Rock For my nineteen-hundred-and-seventy-first pick I am choosing another song from another band that I've been meaning to pick a song from for a bit now. Gentle Giant, which is among the granddaddies of progressive rock, is one of the bands of that ilk that I've never truly gotten that much into, but lately I've been listening to their music. Hear The House, The Street, The Room on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Something to Believe In My song pick two years ago today: Dizzy Gillespie - One Note Samba My song pick three years ago today: Steely Dan - Josie My song pick four years ago today: Joni Mitchell - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat My song pick five years ago today: Big Country - In A Big Country
