2154 Metallica - Orion

Image
From: Master of Puppets ; Year: 1986; Genre: Thrash Metal Off and on over the last little bit I've been going over Metallica's earlier albums, which are considered by many to be their best. While I don't consider myself a huge fan of the band, I really like their earlier material; this instrumental is one of my favourites. Hear Orion on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Jethro Tull - No Lullaby My song pick two years ago today: Cyndi Lauper - The Goonies 'R' Good Enough My song pick three years ago today: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Into The Great Wide Open My song pick four years ago today: The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps My song pick five years ago today: Jethro Tull - Man of Principle

2153 Béla Fleck and the Flecktones - Life in Eleven

Image
From: Rocket Science ; Year: 2011; Genre: Jazz/Bluegrass I have nothing much to say today other than I felt like listening to something different; of course much of what Béla Fleck and company write falls under that criteria. Anyway, this is one of my favourites off of their most recent album. Hear Life in Eleven on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Red Rider - White Hot My song pick two years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Melissa My song pick three years ago today: Queen - Play The Game My song pick four years ago today: Jerry Reed - Guitar Man My song pick five years ago today: Blind Faith - Can't Find My Way Home

2152 Homer & Jethro - The Battle of Camp Kookamonga

Image
From: At the Country Club ; Year: 1960; Genre: Comedy/Parody I was in need of something a little light-hearted today, so I decided on picking one from Homer & Jethro. This is probably their biggest and most recognizable song; it is a parody of Johnny Horton's The Battle of New Orleans , which can be heard here on YouTube . Instead, in their parody it's about a bunch of adolescent campers chasing naked women. Hear The Battle of Camp Kookamonga on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Karussell - Entweder Oder My song pick two years ago today: Nightwish - Last of the Wilds (Erämaan viimeinen) My song pick three years ago today: Rush - Caravan My song pick four years ago today: John Denver - This Old Guitar My song pick five years ago today: Rammstein - Stirb Nicht Vor Mir (Don't Die Before I Do)

2151 Primus - Amos Moses

Image
From: Rhinoplasty ; Year: 1998; Genre: Rock/Country/Funk After yesterday's pick this one came to mind, which I thought I had already chosen, but apparently I hadn't. Anyway, here's Primus' excellent cover of Jerry Reed's country/funk crossover classic Amos Moses . Hear Primus' version of Amos Moses on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Pink Floyd - Speak to Me/Breathe/On the Run My song pick two years ago today: Aerosmith - Rag Doll My song pick three years ago today: John Lennon - Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) My song pick four years ago today: Fuel - Million Miles My song pick five years ago today: Tom Petty - Runnin' Down A Dream

2150 Primus - The Devil Went Down to Georgia

Image
From: Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People ; Year: 2003; Genre: Rock/Country I was listening to the original Charlie Daniels' version of this song, which can be found here on YouTube , the other day and it got me thinking of Primus' cover. I really like what they did with it; kept the original spirit, but still added that "Primus" touch. Watch the music video clip on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Soundgarden - Rusty Cage My song pick two years ago today: Lou Reed - I'm So Free My song pick three years ago today: Traffic - The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys My song pick four years ago today: Hawkwind - Silver Machine My song pick five years ago today: Savatage - Complaint In The System

2149 Megadeth - The Right to Go Insane

Image
From: Endgame ; Year: 2009; Genre: Thrash Metal For some reason I just felt like some good Thrash Metal today. I happened to notice that Megadeth has just released a new album earlier this month ( Super Collider ). Their last few albums have been spectacular, so I do have higher expectations of this one; although it seems that it is being panned by the critics. I guess I should give it a listen soon, at least today we have YouTube to sample albums prior to a purchase; I really don't want to buy another Risk . Anyway, here's one of the best tracks from their Endgame album, which has become one of my favourites. I absolutely love Dave Mustane's lyrical writing on this one; it's awesome how he puts an almost humourous twist on such a serious topic, but that's one of the things that I've always liked about his music. Hear The Right to Go Insane on YouTube. Watch the music video clip on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Earthless - Lost in the

2148 Jethro Tull - Inside

Image
From: Benefit ; Year: 1970; Genre: Progressive Rock Earlier today I had this somewhat whimsical flavoured tune on my mind; it seemed to fit my mood as well, so here it is. Hear Inside on YouTube. 2147 Porcupine Tree - On the Sunday Of Life

Image
From: On the Sunday Of Life ; Year: 1991; Genre: Progressive Rock Been meaning to pick one from Porcupine Tree for a couple of days now... what better track to pick for this Sunday than this aptly titled piece of "musical soundscape." Hear On the Sunday Of Life and Nostalgia Factory on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Asia - Sole Survivor My song pick two years ago today: Ray Stevens - I Need Your Help Barry Manilow My song pick three years ago today: The Who - Rael (1 and 2) My song pick four years ago today: The Clifford Brown & Max Roach Quintet - Joy Spring My song pick five years ago today: Eric Burdon & the Animals - San Franciscan Nights

2146 Tom Petty - You Don't Know It Feels

Image
From: Wildflowers ; Year: 1994; Genre: Rock Most of the day I had this song running through my mind; as I usually do I took it as a sign that I should pick it. It's a rather nice, mellow tune for a Saturday. Hear You Don't Know How It Feels on YouTube. 2145 Rammstein - Vergiss Uns Nicht

Image
From: Mein Land (single); Year: 2011; Genre: Neue Deutsche Härte For a while now I haven't picked a track from Rammstein; I guess I must have burnt myself out, however, today I happened to get in the mood to listen to them yet again. This is the b-side release to their most recent Mein Land single. In some aspects I like this one more than the a-side; it's another one of their more melodic songs. Hear Vergiss Uns Nicht on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Nocturnal Rites - End of our Rope My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Velvet Green My song pick three years ago today: Rammstein - Das Alte Leid My song pick four years ago today: Savatage - The Piper Rap My song pick five years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Take The Money And Run

2144 King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man

Image
From: In the Court of the Crimson King ; Year: 1969; Genre: Progressive Rock I was thinking of a song to pick today, and came up with this one off of King Crimson's debut album. It is one of the best on the album in my opinion, although the entire disc is full of excellent music. 21st Century Schizoid Man is a dream for a progressive rock fan, and definitely a nightmare of sorts for a fan of mainstream. Hear 21st Century Schizoid Man on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Rush - BU2B My song pick two years ago today: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Born to Run My song pick three years ago today: Jethro Tull - Moths My song pick four years ago today: Steely Dan - Dirty Work My song pick five years ago today: John Denver - Opposite Tables

2143 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Here Comes My Girl

Image
From: Damn the Torpedoes ; Year: 1979; Genre: Rock The other day I was going over the epic album Damn the Torpedoes and thought I would pick one off of it. Musically this is one of my personal favourites from from Tom Petty and his band; it's constructed beautifully, and those lines and melodies played on the 12-string electric, (which is by the way the guitar pictured on the record cover being held by Mr. Petty), are some of the main draws for me. Hear Here Comes My Girl on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Jaco Pastorius - Amerika My song pick two years ago today: Waylander - Born to the Fight My song pick three years ago today: Dizzy Gillespie - Night In Tunisia My song pick four years ago today: Tommy James - Draggin' The Line My song pick five years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - The Road To Nowhere

2142 Of Monsters and Men - Dirty Paws

Image
From: My Head is an Animal ; Year: 2011; Genre: Folk Rock/Alternative Rock I had no song really in mind for today's pick, but this is one of the songs that seems to play a lot on my iPod lately, so I thought I would choose it today. For some reason I've come to like Of Monsters and Men and, this, their debut album. Hear Dirty Paws on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Three Dog Night - It's For You My song pick two years ago today: Warrant - Uncle Tom's Cabin My song pick three years ago today: Bon Jovi - Keep The Faith My song pick four years ago today: Neil Young - Rockin' in the Free World My song pick five years ago today: Savatage - Skull Session

2141 Jim Croce - Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)

Image
From: You Don't Mess Around With Jim ; Year: 1972; Genre: Folk Rock The other evening I was listening to some of Jim Croce's songs with my wife, and after talking about some of them I thought I would pick one of them. After checking his songs that I have already chosen, I happened to notice that this one, which is one of my favourites, hadn't been picked yet. Hear Operator (That's Not the Way it Feels) on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Last Train to London My song pick two years ago today: Jaco Pastorius - Kuru/Speak Like a Child My song pick three years ago today: The Grass Roots - Let's Live For Today My song pick four years ago today: The Ventures - Walk-Don't Run My song pick five years ago today: Ten Years After - I'd Love To Change The World

2140 Alestorm - Flower of Scotland

Image
From: Captain Morgan's Revenge ; Year: 2008; Genre: Celtic Folk Metal/Power Metal The other day whilst I was driving home this song came on my iPod; I made sure to make a mental note that I wanted to pick it. I absolutely love their rendition of this rather great track. Actually this song is a cover originally written by Roy Williamson of the folk group The Corries back in the late 1960's. Flower of Scotland is among a handful of songs which serve as an unofficial national anthem for Scotland; it is kind of interesting in my opinion to have such a new song serve such a role in such an old nation. From what I understand it is the most popular song amongst the candidates and is used at sporting events for Scots' teams. Hear Flower of Scotland on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Cybotron - Colossus My song pick two years ago today: AC/DC - Let There Be Rock My song pick three years ago today: Steeleye Span - Black Jack Davy My song pick four yea

2139 Quasar - As You Fall Asleep

Image
From: The Loreli ; Year: 1989; Genre: Progressive Rock I set out to post another song today, but it just didn't fit my mood.... I've been actually in the mood for some '80's electronic progressive rock for most of the day, which left me with actually quite a few bands to choose from. While I like Quasar, their album The Loreli just has never really "clicked" with me, not that it's a bad album or anything like that. Truthfully, I believe it has to do with Tracy Hitchings' vocals, again nothing really bad about them, it's just not my cup of tea so to speak. That being said, I have been taking advantage of this mood that I'm in to give it a good listen and thought I would pick one from the disc as well. Hear As You Fall Asleep on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Troglodyte (Cave Man) My song pick two years ago today: Stahlhammer - Eisbär My song pick three years ago today: The Lovin' Spoonf

2138 The Walter Murphy Band - Toccata and Funk in D Minor

Image
From: Phantom of the Opera ; Year: 1978; Genre: Funk/Disco/classical It's Friday, and since I haven't made one in a while, it is time for a Funky Friday pick. This is Walter Murphy, of " A Fifth of Beethoven " fame's Funk/Disco rendition of J. S. Bach's epic Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor (BWV 565) . Hear Toccata and Funk in D Minor on YouTube. 2137 Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning

Image
From: Diesel and Dust ; Year: 1987; Genre: Alternative Rock Oi vay, over the last couple of days I've been listening to a lot of Midnight Oil; I forgot how much I liked them. This is one of the band's bigger hits, which hails from their awesome album Diesel and Dust ; there is a very good chance that you have heard this song a lot, that is, unless you've been living under a rock. Anyway, great band and a truly great song with a powerful subject matter/message. Watch the music video clip to Beds Are Burning on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Ludwig van Beethoven - Op. 67 - Symphony No.5 in C My song pick two years ago today: Al Di Meola - Bianca's Midnight Lullaby My song pick three years ago today: Ray Stevens - Mr. Businessman My song pick four years ago today: Elton John - Tiny Dancer My song pick five years ago today: Queen - A Kind of Magic

2136 Midnight Oil - The Stars of Warburton

Image
From: Blue Sky Mining ; Year: 1990; Genre: Rock Over the last couple of months, or so it seems, I've been meaning to choose one from Midnight Oil. It just so happened that I heard this song today, which is actually one of my favourites from the 'Oils. Hear The Stars of Warburton on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Rush - The Garden My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Wicked Windows My song pick three years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Take Me Away My song pick four years ago today: Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies My song pick five years ago today: Fastball - The Way

2135 Soundgarden - Worse Dreams

Image
From: King Animal ; Year: 2012; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge I was listening to King Animal again yesterday and I still cannot believe how good it the album is. While there are some lacking tracks, most of the songs are incredible in the extreme. This is, of course, one of my favourites on the disc; I absolutely love the lines and counter-lines being played on the bass and the guitar. Hear Worse Dreams on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness and Charm My song pick two years ago today: Steve Vai - Call it Sleep My song pick three years ago today: John Denver - Calypso My song pick four years ago today: What Made Milwaukee Famous - Idecide My song pick five years ago today: Soft Cell - Tainted Love

2134 Asia - Don't Cry

Image
From: Alpha ; Year: 1983; Genre: Progressive Rock I have been tinkering with my car yesterday and since have had mechanic work on my mind rather than a lot of music. However, for no reason whatsoever I started to think about the band Asia and some of their music. Anyway, this one is the main single off of their somewhat maligned Alpha album; it's not a bad song per se, but certainly not their best. Hear Don't Cry on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Queen - Somebody to Love My song pick two years ago today: Rush (Neil Peart) - O Baterista (Drum Solo) My song pick three years ago today: Hawkwind - Zarozinia My song pick four years ago today: Ghostland Observatory - Sad Sad City My song pick five years ago today: The Wallflowers - One Headlight

2133 ZZ Top - Sleeping Bag

Image
From: Afterburner ; Year: 1985; Genre: Rock The other day I happened to hear a bunch of ZZ Top being played; this one was among them. Sleeping Bag has always been one from the band that I like, so I figured that I would pick it. Watch the music video clip to Sleeping Bag on YouTube. Image
From: On My Way ; Year: 1968; Genre: Pop/Rock Over the last couple of days I have been hearing a lot of B.J. Thomas on the radio at work; since I have yet to pick one from the man, I thought I would today. This is one of my absolute favourites from B.J. Thomas; his powerful vocals really make this track what it is. Hear The Eyes of a New York Woman on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Fleetwood Mac (Bob Welch) - Sentimental Lady My song pick two years ago today: Hawkwind - Fall of Earth City My song pick three years ago today: The Moody Blues - I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band) My song pick four years ago today: Queen - One Vision My song pick five years ago today: Megadeth - Captive Honour

2131 Jethro Tull - Summerday Sands

Image
From: Minstrel in the Gallery (remastered); Year: 1975; Genre: Progressive Rock I had this one running through my mind this morning; as I normally do I am taking it as a sign I should pick it. Summerday Sands is definitely one of the favourites among many fans. It's kind of a rare track, or at least it used it be; it was originally a b-side to the Minstrel in the Gallery single then later released on their 20th anniversary boxed set and eventually included on the remaster of Minstrel in the Gallery . In my opinion this rather pretty song is one of Ian Anderson's better efforts lyrically, plus due to the song's subject matter a lot of people can easily identify with it. Hear Summerday Sands on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Typhoon24 feat. Tatsuzo of YKZ - Spice of Life My song pick two years ago today: Tarot - Veteran of Psychic Wars My song pick three years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Hey Hey What Can I Do My song pick four years ago toda

Image
From: Welcome to My Nightmare ; Year: 1975; Genre: Psychedelic Rock The other day I heard this rather interesting song come on the radio whilst on lunch break and I thought I would add it. Image
From: Wadsworth Mansion ; Year: 1971; Genre: Pop/Rock Off and on over the last month or so I've had this track running through my mind. I figured I should add it to my list; it was an overdue song to pick. This early 70's pop/rock staple was the one hit for the "one hit wonder" band Wadsworth Mansion. Hear Sweet Mary on YouTube. 2127 The Black Crowes - She Talks to Angels

Image
From: Shake Your Money Maker ; Year: 1990; Genre: Rock I can remember a while ago when I used to pick songs that randomly came up on my iPod. However, since my blog has grown so much, quite a lot of the songs I've already picked usually come up. Still, sometimes there are some, like today's pick, that come on that I haven't. I've always especially liked how they utilized the acoustic guitars on this one in the right spots and then bring in the entire band in certain parts. Hear She Talks to Angels on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Rush - Headlong Flight My song pick two years ago today: Frank Zappa - I'm the Slime My song pick three years ago today: Joachim Witt - Und... Ich Lauf My song pick four years ago today: Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al My song pick five years ago today: Every Mother's Son - Come On Down To My Boat

2126 Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf

Image
From: Rio ; Year: 1982; Genre: New Wave Earlier today I heard a lot of Duran Duran, including this track. I made a mental note that I should pick one of their songs; funny enough I was positive that I picked this track in particular sometime in the last few years. After noticing its absence from my blog there was no other song that I wanted to choose today, being that it is one of my favourite song from the band. Hear the full 5:14 "Night" version on YouTube. Image
From: Allied Forces ; Year: 1981; Genre: Hard Rock Out of a few songs I had on my mind I thought I would choose this one, which is the title track off of Triumph's '81 release.
