6691. David Bowie - TVC 15

Image
From: Station to Station ; Year: 1976; Genre: Progressive Rock/Space Rock Had this album play whilst out running errands and I thought it was a nice sign that I should pick another track from it. TVC 15 is kind of a fun little quirky song that delves into Bowie's excellent imagination. Behind the upbeat and very danceable veneer is a disturbing tale. It is about a man's girlfriend being pulled into his fancy television set; he begs and pleads for it to return her to no avail. He ponders and later intends to make the same "leap" to be with her on the other side. Bowie at his best, no doubt.   Hear TVC 15 on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Parliament (feat. 6496. David Bowie - Fascination

Image
From: Young Americans ; Year: 1975; Genre: Soul/R&B/Funk Here is a very interesting song that was actually written by Luther Vandross before he broke big as Funky Music (is a Part of Me) . He was one of David Bowie's backup singers and this one was written while on tour and Bowie heard and apparently loved the track. He ended up recording it with much of the lyrics changed to fit his musical ideas as well as slowing the overall track down. Long story short, this very much helped Luther Vandross financially as well as helped his break out; he himself would later record it in its original form with his band Luther . Fascination is without a doubt an essential Bowie track, especially if you love his soul/R&B flavoured sound of the '70s.    Hear Fascination on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Lionel Richie - Stuck on You     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Rascals - A Beautiful Mornin g   My song pick 3 years ago tod...

5931. David Bowie - Soul Love

Image
From The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ; Year: 1972; Genre: Space Rock/Glam Rock For the last couple or so of months I have kept returning to this rather historic album and at the same time attempting to listen to it with "fresh ears" so to speak. Essentially trying to hear parts of the song I haven't normally focused on and to listen deeper into wot I do normally pay most of my attention to. I can say it definitely has been eye, or rather ear opening to behold this amazing space rock opera both musically and lyrically.   Hear Soul Love on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Band of Horses - Lights   My song pick 2 years ago today: Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love   My song pick 3 years ago today: Funkadelic - Connections & Disconnections My song pick 4 years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Ashes in the Fall My song pick 5 years ago today: The Thermals - Power Doesn't Run on Nothing My song ...

5879. David Bowie - Moonage Daydream

Image
From: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ; Year: 1971; Genre: Space Rock/Glam Rock Heard this great track the other day whilst out and about once again, which seemed like a perfect pick. It's interesting how it seems that the late-great David Bowie was about the only one who could write and perform a space rock song and it would become extremely popular hit. This record is loaded with great memorable tunes and this one is at or near the top in my opinion. There's not one single aspect of this song that I dislike; such a great song.   Hear Moonage Daydream on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The O'Jays - Love Train   My song pick 2 years ago today: Billy Joel - The Stranger   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ace - How Long   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Fixx - Red Skies My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Raising Steam My song pick 6 years ago today: Tesla - Hang Tough My song pick 7 years ...

Image
From: Hunky Dory ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock/Pop Off and on over the last month or so I have had songs off of this record playing in my mind; I am finally getting around to choosing one today. This track is kind of an oddball when compared to the other songs on the album, being that it's light-hearted, uplifting, and just a fun one to listen to.   Hear Fill Your Heart on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bob Rivers - Sled Zeppelin   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bob Rivers Comedy Corp. - The Restroom Door Said, "Gentlemen"   My song pick 3 years ago today: King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black   My song pick 4 years ago today: Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show - Sylvia's Mother My song pick 5 years ago today: John Denver - Goodbye Again My song pick 6 years ago today: John McCutcheon - Christmas in the Trenches My song pick 7 years ago today: Cybotron - Implosion My song pick 8 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Godzilla My so...

5522. David Bowie and the Pat Metheny Group - This Is Not America

Image
From: The Falcon and the Snowman (soundtrack) ; Year: 1985; Genre: Rock/Pop I have no idea why, but I've been having music from David Bowie running through my mind a lot lately. This one hails from the soundtrack of the 1985 film The Falcon and the Snowman written by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays performed by their group; and for this track David Bowie came in and helped write the lyrics and sung lead vocals. For Bowie This Is Not America became part of a string of hit songs from films he was a part of during the mid '80s.   Hear This Is Not America on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Corey Hart - Sunglasses At Night   My song pick 2 years ago today: Chicago - Feelin' Stronger Every Day   My song pick 3 years ago today: Lobo - Pee-Ro Juan Valdez Sam Quixote My song pick 4 years ago today: AC/DC - Are You Ready My song pick 5 years ago today: Bootsy's Rubber Band - Jam Fan (Hot) My song pick 6 years ago today: Van Halen - The Dream is Over...

5281. David Bowie & Bing Crosby - Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy

Image
From: Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy ; Year: 1978; Genre: Pop/Christmas Probably one of the more remembered pop cultural events of the last 40 some/odd years pertaining to Christmas, this duet between the two legends is definitely iconic. 5237. David Bowie - Real Cool World

Image
From: Songs From the Cool World ; Year: 1992; Genre: Rock I remember this song the other day from the soundtrack from the early 1990's cult-classic Ralph Bakshi film Cool World . I was first introduced to it from a trailer on my videocassette of Star Trek VI and, as a teenager at the time, was intrigued. We eventually rented it a few years later and to say the least I really didn't know what to think of it; the movie was strange and seemed to be a disjointed mess overall. Looking back on it now, and since being introduced to other works from Ralph Bakshi, I can see the charm and some of its better points. Anyway, this was David Bowie's contribution to the soundtrack of the film, which actually saw praise in contrast to the movie it was made for.   Hear Real Cool World on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Spacehog - In The Meantime   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rare Earth - Ma   My song pick 3 years ago today: Crash Test Dummies - Swimming...

3967. David Bowie - Five Years

Image
From: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ; Year: 1972; Genre: Glam Rock In my opinion Five Years is a very odd song to open such an album with, but the whole "end of the world" theme really works.
