6834. Band of Horses - Marry Song

Image
From: Cease to Begin ; Year: 2007; Genre: Blues Rock/Indie Rock Other than having music from this album on my mind I have no reason for this pick; I like this song and album too, I suppose.     Hear Marry Song on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Edgar Winter's White Trash - I Got News for You     My song pick 2 years ago today: Billie Holiday and Her Orchestra - Them There Eyes     My song pick 3 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Chevrolet   My song pick 4 years ago today: Eddie Rabbitt - 747   My song pick 5 years ago today: B.J. 6813. The Delgados - I Fought the Angels

Image
From: Universal Audio ; Year: 2004; Genre: Indie Rock Songs from the defunct Scottish indie rock band the Delgados happened to randomly come on over the last week or so, you know wot that means. Anyway, this is one I thought I had already chosen, but evidentially not. I Fought the Angels has always been one of my to favourites from their final record. It has a low-fidelity sound and I have read where people compare this track to the general sound of The Pixies, which I can hear, but there is a lot more to it in my opinion.   Hear I Fought the Angels on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Five Stairsteps - World of Fantasy     My song pick 2 years ago today: Bonnie Tyler - Here She Comes   My song pick 3 years ago today: Kajagoogoo - Hang on Now   My song pick 4 years ago today: Link Wray - I Got To Ramble (Dedicated to the Memory of Duane Allman)   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Thermals - Back to the Sea   My so...

6678. The Cure - Maybe Someday

Image
From: Bloodflowers ; Year: 2000; Genre: Gothic Rock/Alternative Rock Sadly, yet another storied musician recently passed. This time it was The Cure's guitarist/other instruments Perry Bamonte, who was with the band throughout the 1990s to mid-2000s and again just recently; he was a very young 65.    Hear Maybe Someday on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong - Summertime     My song pick 2 years ago today: Herman's Hermits - There's a Kind of Hush (All Over the World)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jerry Reed - Eight More Miles To Louisville   My song pick 4 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Demon's Kiss   My song pick 5 years ago today: Bee Gees - I Gotta Get a Message to You   My song pick 6 years ago today: Ultravox - Mr. X   My song pick 7 years ago today: Charley Pride - Daydreams About Night Things My song pick 8 years ago today: Supertramp - Cannonball My song...

6509. The Thermals - Returning to the Fold

Image
From: The Body, The Blood, The Machine ; Year: 2006; Genre: Indie Rock Not too difficult to believe that this is the last song from this rather prophetic concept album I had left to choose from. In my opinion it is one of their best by far and my personal favourite from the band.     Hear Returning to the Fold on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Doors - Twentieth Century Fox     My song pick 2 years ago today: 1984 - There's a Wrinkle In Our Time   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bay City Rollers - Yesterday's Hero   My song pick 4 years ago today: Supertramp - Breakfast in America   My song pick 5 years ago today: Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe   My song pick 6 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Eyes On Fire My song pick 7 years ago today: The Beach Boys - All Summer Long My song pick 8 years ago today: Bernard Wright - Who Do You Love My song pick 9 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Check ...

6404. Band of Horses - In Need of Repair

Image
From: Things Are Great ; Year: 2022; Genre: Indie Rock I have to say, this most recent record from Band of Horses still holds up a few years on; I still love to put it on and zone out listening to it. This track in particular reminds me a lot of mid-late 1970s soft rock in all the best ways.   Hear In Need of Repair on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Classics IV - Traces   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dr. John - Snake Eyes   My song pick 3 years ago today: Harry Nilsson - Jump Into the Fire   My song pick 4 years ago today: Bob Dylan - It Ain't Me Babe   My song pick 5 years ago today: Of Monsters and Men - Alligator   My song pick 6 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Beat 'Em Up My song pick 7 years ago today: ZZ Top - Cheap Sunglasses My song pick 8 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Time Is On Your Side My song pick 9 years ago today: Exile - Please Be There My song pick 10 years ago today: Hank Willia...

6366. The Thermals - A Pillar of Salt

Image
From: The Body, The Blood, The Machine ; Year: 2006; Genre: Indie Rock Lately I have been listening to this album a lot. Noticing just how great the entire record actually is; I mean, I really have always liked it since hearing I Hold the Sound as part of the soundtrack to an NHL video game about 18 some years ago. I like their other albums as well, but this one was the best, to me at least.   Hear A Pillar of Salt on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bachman & Turner - Rollin' Along   My song pick 2 years ago today: Yes - And You and I   My song pick 3 years ago today: Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli (Quintette du Hot Club de France) - Blue Drag   My song pick 4 years ago today: Warren Zevon - Nighttime in the Switching Yard   My song pick 5 years ago today: April Wine - Silver Dollar   My song pick 6 years ago today: Smokehouse - Polar Funk My song pick 7 years ago today: Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fal...

6348. Lightning Seeds - Pure

Image
From: Cloudcuckooland ; Year: 1989; Genre: Pop/Alternative Rock Pure is another song that I cannot remember the last time I heard it, but it just happened to pop into my mind nevertheless. It's one of those catchy tunes that will stay with you, but not to the point that it'll play without ceasing, driving you nuts along the way.    Hear Pure on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Quarterflash - Find Another Fool   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dire Straits - Solid Rock   My song pick 3 years ago today: J Rocc - Cold Heat Megamix   My song pick 4 years ago today: Marshall Crenshaw - You're My Favorite Waste of Time   My song pick 5 years ago today: Scorpions - Dancing With the Moonlight   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Surfaris - Point Panic My song pick 7 years ago today: The Temptations - Masterpiece My song pick 8 years ago today: Yes - A Venture My song pick 9 years ago today: Pearl Jam - Dissent My song ...

6264. The Thermals - St. Rosa and the Swallows

Image
From: The Body, the Blood, the Machine ; Year: 2006; Genre: Indie Rock For an indie band with punk sensibilities it's kind of interesting that they'd make a full-on concept album, but they did an amazing job painting and perhaps pre-shadowing happenings years after the record's release. It is still my personal favourite from the band, which contained the song that introduced me to their music: I Hold The Sound . I have to say though, the high emotion and the frantic quality of the punk-inspired delivery vocally really help sell the urgency of the tale.   Hear St. Rosa and the Swallows on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Hollies - Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dio - Rainbow in the Dark   My song pick 3 years ago today: War - You Got the Power   My song pick 4 years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - New World Messiah   My song pick 5 years ago today: Duran Duran - The Universe Alone   My song...

6261. Band of Horses - Detlef Schrempf

Image
From: Cease to Begin ; Year: 2007; Genre: Indie Rock I have never been completely sure what this song was about except for one side of a dialogue coming to terms with a relationship. I suppose that the biggest aspect to throw me off is how the title has no apparent relation to the song's content. I am guessing that the title is reference to Detlef Schrempf , who was a star basketball player who was a member of the now-defunct Seattle SuperSonics for a time, which with the band being from the area kind of would make sense, but still has no contention apparently.   Hear Detlef Schrempf on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Keith - 98.6   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dick Dale and his Del-Tones - Taco Wagon   My song pick 3 years ago today: Hot Butter - Slag Solution   My song pick 4 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Shakers and Movers   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Urban Apocalypse   My song pick 6 years ago tod...

6251. Sugarcult - Memory

Image
From: Palm Trees and Power Lines ; Year: 2004; Genre: Indie Rock/Alternative Rock/Punk I remember back, about 15 to 20 years ago there was an amazing crop of indie artists that still to this day I follow; one of them was Sugarcult. This band is yet another amongst many that I seemingly erroneously believe that I have already chosen a song from, but obviously have not. Memory was in fact the first song that I heard from the band and that hooked me for good. The high energy punk vibe combined with the maudlin subject matter and lyrics really make a great pairing.   Hear Memory on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - White Flags   My song pick 2 years ago today: Billie Holiday - If The Moon Turns Green   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rolling Stones - Laugh, I Nearly Died   My song pick 4 years ago today: Joe Tex - Ain't Gonna Bump No More   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ugly Kid Joe - Under the Bottom   My son...

6298. For Squirrels - Plymouth

Image
From: Baypath Rd ; Year: 1994; Genre: Alternative Rock/Indie Rock Absolutely adore the raw energy and sound of this one; has all of the hallmarks of a garage band, which for me not only brings back memories, but is pure awesomeness!   Hear Plymouth on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Undisputed Truth - Atomic Funk   My song pick 2 years ago today: Canned Heat - London Blues   My song pick 3 years ago today: Soundgarden - Never the Machine Forever   My song pick 4 years ago today: Slade - Everyday My song pick 5 years ago today: Mahavishnu Orchestra - Smile of the Beyond My song pick 6 years ago today: Jerry Reed - The Bandit My song pick 7 years ago today: Disco Dream and the Androids - Dream Machine My song pick 8 years ago today: Neil Young - Mr. Soul My song pick 9 years ago today: Lobo - A Simple Man My song pick 10 years ago today: Yes - Fly From Here (Suite) My song pick 11 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Invincible...

6152. The Thermals - An Ear For Baby

Image
From: The Body, The Blood, The Machine ; Year: 2006; Genre: Indie Rock I've kept coming back to the somewhat prophetic concept album as of late; this is one of the darker tracks amongst a lot of darkness on it. However, I've always found The Thermals' music quite odd in that if you don't really focus too much on the lyrics they come off as just some really good upbeat songs. Very interesting is that I was first introduced to them and this album through the soundtrack of an NHL 2K video game over 15 years ago and have liked the band since having it play whilst engaged in a hockey fight.   Hear An Ear For Baby on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Hawkwind - Jack of Shadows   My song pick 2 years ago today: George Clinton - Maximumisness   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby & The Range - Look Out Any Window   My song pick 4 years ago today: Marillion - This Strange Engine   My song pick 5 years ago today: 10cc - Good Mor...

5817. Fleet Foxes - Innocent Son

Image
From: Sun Giant ; Year: 2008; Genre: Indie Folk/Indie Rock Was trying to remember when I first got introduced to this band; I think it was this album that I bought from one of those keyosk peddlers in a local shopping mall, you know, the ones that if you get too close and/or make eye contact will relentlessly bother you until you are forced to be rude or buy something. If I remember right he was selling indie CDs and this one was the only one that seemed worth the price, so I chose it and went along on my merry way. It wasn't until quite a span of time later that I happened upon the disc in the clutter around the house and decided to give it a listen. Long story short, their music eventually grew on me to the point that I liked it, so, every once in a while their stuff pops up when listening to music.   Hear Innocent Son on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Aphrodite's Child - The Four Horsemen   My song pick 2 years ago today: Gap Band - You Dropp...

5624. Fleet Foxes - Fool's Errand

Image
From: Crack-Up ; Year: 2017; Genre: Indie Rock/Folk Rock You can hear a lot of different and distinct styles and influences on the band throughout this track, which makes it an especially nice track to behold, especially with the audio mixing wearing headphones.   Hear Fool's Errand on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Megadeth - Post American World   My song pick 2 years ago today: John Mellencamp - Just Another Day   My song pick 3 years ago today: James Gang - Walk Away   My song pick 4 years ago today: Carmen - Looking Outside (My Window) My song pick 5 years ago today: The Guess Who - Cardboard Empire My song pick 6 years ago today: Jigsaw - I've Seen The Film, I've Read The Book My song pick 7 years ago today: Dio - Holy Diver My song pick 8 years ago today: Dazz Band - Joystick My song pick 9 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Iron Man My song pick 10 years ago today: Ella Fitzgerald - Stormy Weather My song pick 11 ye...

5575. Beat Crusaders - Summerend

Image
From: Popdod ; Year: 2008; Genre: Indie Rock Decided to revisit the Beat Crusaders once more and check out some of the material from towards the end of the band. It was definitely nice to hear that their low-fi, almost indie sound did not fade; it's still sad that they broke up, but it makes us fans appreciate wot we have all the more.   Hear Summerend on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - To One in Paradise   My song pick 2 years ago today: Sky - Gymnopedie No. 1   My song pick 3 years ago today: Lawrence Gowan - A Criminal Mind   My song pick 4 years ago today: R.E.O. 5553. Band of Horses - Lights

Image
From: Things Are Great ; Year: 2022; Genre: Indie Rock Decided to check out Band of Horses' newest album today, and to say the least, it's real nice to hear the band returning to the sound they had back when I first discovered them. Although, from what I understand, the group's lineup has changed since their previous record, but from wot I hear it has not been adverse of their sound.   Hear Lights on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - Connections & Disconnections My song pick 3 years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Ashes in the Fall My song pick 4 years ago today: The Thermals - Power Doesn't Run on Nothing My song pick 5 years ago today: Sandy Denny - Solo My song pick 6 years ago today: Blondie - Call Me My song pick 7 years ago today: Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting My song pick 8 years ago today: Alice in Chains - No Excuses My song...

5542. 3rd Secret - Last Day of August

Image
From: 3rd Secret ; Year: 2021; Genre: Alternative Rock The first time I perused this album from the supergroup 3rd Secret I noticed this track's title and knew I had to choose it on this perfect day for it. For those of us who grew up with or lived through the early to mid 1990s grunge movement, Last Day of August will give you a very familiar and probably welcoming sound to your ears. It is so nice to have new music being made that's not only consumable, but worth the money to purchase it.   Hear Last Day of August on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Van Morrison - Cold Wind in August   My song pick 2 years ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tiger in a Spotlight   My song pick 3 years ago today: Max Roach - Blues Waltz My song pick 4 years ago today: David Bowie - After All My song pick 5 years ago today: Asia - Never in a Million Years My song pick 6 years ago today: Duran Duran - My Own Way My song pick 7 years ago today: Th...

5517. 3rd Secret - Somewhere in Time

Image
From: 3rd Secret ; Year: 2022; Genre: Alternative Rock/Grunge The other day I learned of this album and supergroup's existence; I know it's been out already for a few months now, but I'm not a person who has his finger on the pulse of new music and/or sometimes I'm slow on the uptake even when it comes to things I really enjoy. Anyhoo, for others like myself whom may not be aware, this is a project by members of bands who made up the Seattle grunge scene back in the early-mid 1990s. With alumni from the likes of Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, amongst others you would kind of figure out what they sound like. However, they are not a Temple of the Dog for the 2020s; their sound is actually fairly unique, but blended with that familiar grunge you've been hearing for about 30 some odd years now.   Hear Somewhere in Time on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Temptations - Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ultravox -...

5477. The Delgados - Primary Alternative

Image
From: The Lazarwalker (EP) ; Year: 1995; Genre: Indie Rock I used to listen to The Delgados quite a bit, but for some reason they kept fading away, never came to dislike them or their music, I just quit listening to them that much. Happened to have them pop back in my mind the other day and thought I'd choose another one of their songs. Interestingly enough, just as I was going over their albums I discovered that the band has regrouped for s short tour in the U.K.; this will be the first time they have performed in about 17 years or so. Here's hoping it lasts for more than the five shows! As far as I am aware, this EP was their first studio release and it contains four songs I had not heard prior. This is the opening track and is definitely in the indie rock genre with that great raw, lo-fi sound.    Hear Primary Alternative on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Toto - Make Believe   My song pick 2 years ago today: Badfinger - Take It All ...

5418. The Thermals - I Might Need You To Kill

Image
From: The Body, The Blood, The Machine ; Year: 2006; Genre: Indie Rock This was the album that originally got me into the band, which is kind of odd being that it's a concept album from an indie rock act with some punk sensibilities, but it absolutely works. I Might Need You To Kill is the second song in the story and starts to build the narrative pretty well. Even listening to the songs by themselves they more or less stand on their own, especially with the raw, lo-fi sound of the music.   Hear I Might Need You To Kill on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: IQ - Passing Strangers   My song pick 2 years ago today: Melissa Manchester - Don't Cry Out Loud   My song pick 3 years ago today: Lighthouse - Magic's in the Dancing My song pick 4 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Down to the Line My song pick 5 years ago today: The Guess Who - Bus Rider My song pick 6 years ago today: Of Monsters and Men - Crystals My song pick 7 ...
