William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: The Sun, Moon & Herbs ; Year: 1971; Genre: Jazz Fusion It always puts me in a good mood when I play one of Dr. John's albums. This one mixes Dr. John's signature New Orleans sound with some jazz and rock. I have to agree with the artist: it is best to listen to this one at night with the lights off; just adds to the mystique.   Hear Pots on Fiyo (Filé Gumbo) / Who I Got to Fall On (If the Pot Get Heavy) on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Slow Groove     My song pick 2 years ago today: Sly Stone - His Eye Is on the Sparrow   My song pick 3 years ago today: Roy Eldridge and Benny Carter - Close Your Eyes   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jigsaw - One Way Street   My song pick 5 years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Goodbye Angels   My song pick 6 years ago today: Triumph - Somebody's Out There   My song pick 7 years ago today: Primus - DMV My song pick 8 years ago today: Al ...

From: In a Sentimental Mood ; Year: 1989; Genre: Swing/Big Band Jazz Had this song on my mind since yesterday; quite a catchy and upbeat track to say the least. This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. Many have recorded versions of this popular standard over the years, I almost went for a few others, but I knew Dr. John's really well, and I am a fan of his work, so I chose his rendition.   Hear Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Herman's Hermits - End of the World   My song pick 2 years ago today: Alice in Chains - The One You Know   My song pick 3 years ago today: Yes - Going for the One   My song pick 4 years ago today: Dayton Sidewinders - Phoenix ...

From: GRIS-gris ; Year: 1968; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk/Psychedelic Rock I couldn't help but pick something from the late-great Dr. John today, so I thought I would go back to his debut album. The awesome blend of jazzy musical styles throughout this track are the main draw for me without a doubt. Him and his band really knew how to lay it down, but wot do you expect from a group of highly proficient musicians steeped in the musical melting pot that is New Orleans?   Hear Mama Roux on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Accept - Bulletproof   My song pick 2 years ago today: Mel McDaniel - Bordertown Woman   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Main Ingredient - You've Got To Take It (If You Want It)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Soundgarden - Heretic   My song pick 5 years ago today: Black 47 - Hard Times My song pick 6 years ago today: Rainbow - Stone Cold My song pick 7 years ago today: For Squirrels - Disenchanted My song pi...

From: Jazz to the World ; Year: 1995; Genre: Christmas Music/Jazz/Blues There are so many great genres that compliment the Holidays, but jazz in its many, many forms has to be towards the top with some of the best renditions. This is, of course, Dr. John's bluesy jazz interpretation of the traditional 19th Century French hymn, which he pulls off marvelously with his signature gruff and gravely vocals.   Hear  Il Est Ne, Le Divin Enfant on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Louis Armstrong with Velma Middleton - Baby It's Cold Outside   My song pick 2 years ago today: Primus - Hail Santa   My song pick 3 years ago today: Soundgarden - Head Down   My song pick 4 years ago today: Dave Edmunds - Almost Saturday Night   My song pick 5 years ago today: Paul Revere & The Raiders - Just Like Me My song pick 6 years ago today: Soundgarden - Burden in My Hand My song pick 7 years ago today: Wild Turkey - Good Old Days My s...

From: City Lights ; Year: 1978; Genre: Soul/Funk/Jazz I noted that I had only chosen one song from Dr. John, and that was some time ago, so let's pick another! Dr. John is another one of those musicians that I find comforting for some reason; don't really understand why exactly, but I just like it a lot.   Hear Snake Eyes on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Harry Nilsson - Jump Into the Fire   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bob Dylan - It Ain't Me Babe   My song pick 3 years ago today: Of Monsters and Men - Alligator   My song pick 4 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Beat 'Em Up My song pick 5 years ago today: ZZ Top - Cheap Sunglasses My song pick 6 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Time Is On Your Side My song pick 7 years ago today: Exile - Please Be There My song pick 8 years ago today: Hank Williams - Hey Good Lookin' My song pick 9 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Speak My song pick 10 years ago today: The Be...

From: Future Blues ; Year: 1970; Genre: Blues Rock/Blues Just happened to be thinking of this band that I have not chosen a song from in quite a while and decided to do so. This very bluesy rock piece has some incredible blues guitar playing from Alan Wilson and some great piano by Dr. John , who sat in on a couple of tracks from the record. This is definitely a song to please blue aficionados as well as hard-core guitarists.   Hear London Blues on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Soundgarden - Never the Machine Forever   My song pick 2 years ago today: Slade - Everyday My song pick 3 years ago today: Mahavishnu Orchestra - Smile of the Beyond My song pick 4 years ago today: Jerry Reed - The Bandit My song pick 5 years ago today: Disco Dream and the Androids - Dream Machine My song pick 6 years ago today: Neil Young - Mr. Soul My song pick 7 years ago today: Lobo - A Simple Man My song pick 8 years ago today: Yes - Fly From Here (Suite) ...

From: In the Right Place ; Year: 1973; Genre: Funk/R&B I happened upon and remembered this song earlier this week and thought it would be a perfect pick for my 114th consecutive Funky Friday pick. That New Orleans style of funk combined with all of those tongue-in-cheek lyrics make this a fun and memorable track. Hear Right Place Wrong Time on YouTube.
