6565. Carmen - Sailor Song

Image
From: Fandangos in Space ; Year: 1973; Genre: Flamenco Rock/Progressive Rock Dang, there are not too many songs left of this band for me to choose with only three records and the majority from them I've already picked. By no means is this a song I dislike with so many I have gone through prior, just some great music to get through. This is another epic piece telling a tale of adventure, danger, and glory with a simply great thumping flamenco rhythm, Zapateado dancing and overall good music.   Hear Sailor Song on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Isley Brothers - Hope You Feel Better Love (Part 1+2)     My song pick 2 years ago today: Gary Wright - Dream Weaver   My song pick 3 years ago today: Glass Tiger - Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)   My song pick 4 years ago today: ABBA - Don't Shut Me Down   My song pick 5 years ago today: Classics IV - Stormy My song pick 6 years ago today: Wilson Pickett - Funky Situation My...

6099. Esteban - Flamenco Wind

Image
From: Enter the Heart ; Year: 1998; Genre: Flamenco/Flamenco Rock Yesterday whilst entering the freeway this track came on; it was the perfect song at the exact perfect time.... I don't know wot it is about flamenco and all of its subgenres, but it immediately gets me in one of those great moods and if I happen to be behind the wheel of a car, my right foot gets real heavy; like it feels as if it is made out of dark matter.    Hear Flamenco Wind on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Reunion - A Brighter Day   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Guess Who? - Guess I'll Find a Place   My song pick 3 years ago today: Klaatu - Maybe I'll Move to Mars   My song pick 4 years ago today: Journey - Just the Same Way   My song pick 5 years ago today: Graham Central Station - Mirror My song pick 6 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Little Wing My song pick 7 years ago today: The Cosmic Sound Orchestra - Movin' Groovin' My ...

5887. Al Di Meola - Atavism of Twilight

Image
From: Cielo e Terra ; Year: 1985; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Flamenco Been a little bit since my last Al Di Meola pick, and this is another really good one. For the most part I use his music whilst working or contemplating something, which it serves quite well, but this is one of those songs that keeps demanding your attention. The exquisite flamenco playing on the guitar and the synclavier interlude really take you on a long mental journey; even with the sparse arrangement it has such a big sound.    Hear Atavism of Twilight on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lou Reed - My Red Joystick   My song pick 2 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Don't You Worry About a Thing   My song pick 3 years ago today: Cream - Take it Back   My song pick 4 years ago today: Sweet - Ballroom Blitz My song pick 5 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Don't Let the Blues Get You Down My song pick 6 years ago today: Commodores - Easy My song pick ...

5785. Carmen - People Dressed in Black

Image
From: Dancing on a Cold Wind ; Year: 1974; Genre: Progressive Rock/Flamenco Rock This one comes from the second side of their album, which is titled: Remembrances (Recuerdos de Espana) that appears to be somewhat of a novella sized concept album. People Dressed in Black comes just passed the midpoint; they really use all the delicate power from the flamenco to sell the the dark and brooding feeling throughout the song. The vocal work is one of the best aspects of it; the music kind of takes a supporting role. I really love the wailing harmonies and the musical "jabs" that go along with it.   Hear People Dressed in Black on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Boston - We're Ready   My song pick 2 years ago today: Alestorm - Treasure Island   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Human League - Do or Die   My song pick 4 years ago today: Humble Pie - Get Down To It My song pick 5 years ago today: King Crimson - Exiles My song pick 6 years...

5501. Carmen - Retirando

Image
From: Fandangos in Space ; Year: 1973; Genre: Flamenco Rock/Progressive Rock On and off for the last few days I've had Carmen and their quite unique sound on my mind. It's very annoying that I only have three albums of music of their to choose songs from, and I've already exhausted one of their records, so the "pickings are getting slim." Anyway, even though this is a deeper cut from it and one of the briefer songs in length Retirando is still an excellent piece. I really love the odd rhythms throughout this one; it makes for a perfect segue into the record's title-track.   Hear Retirando on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: George Clinton - Last Dance My song pick 2 years ago today: Marillion - Cover My Eyes (Pain in Heaven)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Don Henley - All She Wants to Do Is Dance My song pick 4 years ago today: Brave Belt - Can You Feel It My song pick 5 years ago today: Soundgarden - Rowing My song pick 6 years ago ...

5376. Carmen - Fandangos in Space

Image
From: Fandangos in Space ; Year: 1973; Genre: Flamenco Rock/Progressive Rock For over the last week or so I've been meaning to choose another song from the avant-garde flamenco rock band Carmen. At this rate it will not be long and I'll run out of their songs to pick; I've already cleaned out one album and most of their other two. Anyway, this is, obviously, the title-track off of their debut album that has all of the hallmarks of the music they're known for; it's another song of theirs that seems to "tic" all of the check-marks for me personally.   Hear Fandangos in Space on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Harlequin - You Are The Light   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Magick Valley   My song pick 3 years ago today: Elton John - Crocodile Rock My song pick 4 years ago today: Mr. Bungle - Quote Unquote (Travolta) My song pick 5 years ago today: Jane's Addiction - Stop! 5271. Paco De Lucía - De Madruga (Seguiriyas)

Image
From: El Duende Flamenco De Paco De Lucía ; Year: 1972; Genre: Flamenco I really love flamenco music, and in my opinion it is one of the most beautiful music styles in the world; Paco De Lucía is one of the greatest masters of the art form from the last century. This is such a beautiful and powerful emotive piece played on the guitar.    Hear De Madruga (Seguiriyas) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Reverend Horton Heat - Viva Las Vegas   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bootsy Collins - WinterFunkyLand (AKA Winter Wonderland)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Four Tops - It's All In The Game My song pick 4 years ago today: Hammerfall - Wildfire My song pick 5 years ago today: Heart - Magic Man My song pick 6 years ago today: Allan Sherman - I See Bones My song pick 7 years ago today: Rush - Chemistry My song pick 8 years ago today: Rick James - Super Freak My song pick 9 years ago today: The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Three to...

5034. Carmen - The Horseman

Image
From: Dancing on a Cold Wind ; Year: 1975; Genre: Flamenco Rock/Progressive Rock I had them on my mind again when sitting down to make my pick today. This one oozes with their brand of fused flamenco with hard rock after a rather lighter intro that is.   Hear The Horseman on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Daniel Lanois - That's The Way It Is   My song pick 2 years ago today: Raspberries - Go All The Way My song pick 3 years ago today: The Thermals - Test Pattern My song pick 4 years ago today: Kool & The Gang - Jungle Boogie My song pick 5 years ago today: The Beatles - For You Blue My song pick 6 years ago today: Boston - I Had a Good Time My song pick 7 years ago today: Sky - FIFO (suite) My song pick 8 years ago today: Faith No More - Easy My song pick 9 years ago today: Pallas - Rise and Fall, Part 1 My song pick 10 years ago today: Counting Crows - Mr. Jones My song pick 11 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival...

4924. Carmen - Stepping Stone

Image
From: Fandangos in Space ; Year: 1973; Genre: Flamenco Rock/Progressive Rock Well, Christmas is over once again, so I suppose it's back to picking normal songs again. If you could call the band Carmen normal that is, they're quite unique actually. Anyway, here's one that exemplifies their sound quite nicely. The rhythm section in particular works excellently with the lead instruments/vocals to make a beautiful song.    Hear Stepping Stone on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Joan Crawford   My song pick 2 years ago today: Frank Zappa - Theme From The 3rd Movement Of Sinister Footwear My song pick 3 years ago today: The Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Loving My song pick 4 years ago today: Steeleye Span - The Cruel Mother My song pick 5 years ago today: The Fifth Dimension - Up, Up and Away My song pick 6 years ago today: Parliament - Rumpofsteelskin My song pick 7 years ago today: Mr. Big - Shine My song pick 8 yea...

4856. Django Reinhardt - Echoes of Spain

Image
From: Django Reinhardt Complete Solo Guitar and Duet Recordings ; Year: 2010 (1939); Genre: Gypsy Jazz/Classical/Flamenco This is a song that really shows how far the skill of the master of the guitar, Django Reinhardt, could go in different genre directions. It has a great blend of flamenco, classical, and his distinctive gypsy jazz styles.   Hear Echoes of Spain on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Van der Graaf Generator - Chemical World   My song pick 2 years ago today: Don Henley - Heart of the Matter My song pick 3 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby and the Range - On The Western Sky My song pick 4 years ago today: Parliament - Children of Production My song pick 5 years ago today: Huey Lewis and the News - Power of Love My song pick 6 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Paranoid My song pick 7 years ago today: The Cult - Painted on My Heart My song pick 8 years ago today: Scott Joplin - The Entertainer My song pick 9 years ago toda...

4842. Carmen - Table Two For One

Image
From: Dancing on a Cold Wind ; Year: 1974; Genre: Flamenco/Rock I heard a song from this album today on my phone and it got me thinking about the rest of it, so, I'm picking another song from it. As always I love their mix of hard rock and flamenco, which makes the sound uniquely theirs.   Hear Table Two For One on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - This Is Not Love   My song pick 2 years ago today: U2 - October My song pick 3 years ago today: Pendragon - Victims of Life My song pick 4 years ago today: Parliament - Mothership Connection (Star Child) My song pick 5 years ago today: Joni Mitchell - Furry Sings the Blues My song pick 6 years ago today: Paul Revere & The Raiders - Kicks My song pick 7 years ago today: C.W. 4777. Carmen - Por Tarantos

Image
From: Fandangos in Space ; Year: 1973; Genre: Flamenco This is a very pretty traditional guitar piece played exquisitely throughout. The only downside for me is that it is only over just a minute and a half in length. Hear Por Tarantos on YouTube. My song pick 1 year ago today: The Guess Who - Runnin' Down the Street My song pick 2 years ago today: Parliament - Sir Nose d'Voidoffunk (Pay Attention – B3M) My song pick 3 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - Sirius/Eye in the Sky My song pick 4 years ago today: 30 Seconds to Mars - Night of the Hunter My song pick 5 years ago today: Rush - The Weapon (Part II of Fear) My song pick 6 years ago today: Genesis - Abacab My song pick 7 years ago today: Savatage - Handful of Rain My song pick 8 years ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - The Barbarian My song pick 9 years ago today: Charlie Parker - Summertime My song pick 10 years ago today: Tarot - Gone My song pick 11 years ago today: The Rol...

4371. Carmen - Conclusion (She Changed)

Image
From: Dancing on a Cold Wind ; Year: 1974; Genre: Progressive Rock/Flamenco Rock Been a busy day thus far and was thinking about the band Carmen again and their second album. 4154. Carmen - Looking Outside (My Window)

Image
From: Fandangos in Space ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock/Flamenco Rock Was bingeing again on the music of Carmen and am picking one off their debut album; it's a three-section piece of music with a great heavy beat and rhythm at times and light, acoustic in another instance. 4047. Carmen - Tales of Spain

Image
From: Fandangos in Space ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock/Flamenco Rock Whilst on the road yesterday I was really enjoying hearing the music of the Avant-garde Flamenco Rock band Carmen. This is a very interesting song both musically and lyrically as well. It changes up the beat quite a few times to the point you would almost think it was a different song all together; all the music is just incredible throughout. Hear Tales of Spain on YouTube. 4022. Ozric Tentacles - Mysticum Arabicola

Image
From: Erpland ; Year: 1990; Genre: Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Rock I find Ozric Tentacles to be one of those bands whose music is perfect to listen to whilst waiting or just passing time. It acts as both "wallpaper music" as well as something very interesting to occupy your attention. Anyway, to best describe this song is electronic and traditional rock music meets flamenco arabe: a beautiful piece. Hear Mysticum Arabicola on YouTube. 3858. Carmen - Bullfight

Image
From: Fandangos in Space ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock/Flamenco Rock I wish this band would've lasted longer; their music is so unique and there are only three albums worth, which is a shame. Anyway, if you like heavy and technical music with the drama and flare of flamenco this one will please, heck, even if that's not your cup of tea it's still great music. Hear Bullfight on YouTube. 3699. Rodrigo - Concierto de Aranjuez

Image
From: Rodrigo: Complete Concertos for Guitar and Harp incl. Concierto de Aranjuez ; Year: 1999 (1939); Genre: 20th Century classical/Flamenco We've all had those times when there's a song playing in your head and because it's an instrumental/classical piece or such; this is one that was driving me insane for years now. However, the other day I finally discovered its title and who wrote it, so, yes, this is today's pick. If you've heard the piece before it's most likely the second movement, which is definitely notable. The flamenco guitar and the woodwinds really drive this composition and bring out so many emotions; definitely one of the best pieces written last century. Watch a full performance of Concierto de Aranjuez on YouTube. Or hear only the most famous second movement on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Entrow My song pick two years ago today: Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance M...

3643. Carmen - Dancing on a Cold Wind

Image
From: Dancing on a Cold Wind ; Year: 1974; Genre: Flamenco Rock Dang, if I keep picking songs from this band I'll run out pretty soon; already picked every song from The Gypsies , so all I have left is their two earlier ones and I've already been picking songs from them as well. Anyhoo, if you are a fan of flamenco with a rock tinge to it or like progressive rock this one should be a treat. Hear Dancing on a Cold Wind on YouTube.
