3512. Ultravox - Hymn

Image
From: Quartet ; Year: 1982; Genre: New Wave Heard one of their songs the other day and still had them on my mind, so I thought I would pick another one. Image
From: Rare Earth In Concert ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock/R&B/Funk It hit me for some reason to pick a song from Rare Earth today; it's been a while since I picked one. 3510. Twelfth Night - C.R.A.B.

Image
From: Art & Illusion ; Year: 1984; Genre: Progressive Rock Surprised that I have not picked a song from second-wave prog rockers Twelfth Night yet. Image
From: Fly Some Funk Up to the Moon ; Year: 1978; Genre: Funk/Soul This album was on my mind yesterday and since it's a Funky Friday too I couldn't think of a band better to pick a song from. 3507. Pallas - Shadow of the Sun

Image
From: Wearewhoweare ; Year: 2014; Genre: Progressive Rock/Progressive Metal The other day I got introduced to the most recent album from the band Pallas: Wearewhoweare . I immediately fell in love with it; this one is definitely on the same caliber as their epic The Sentinel album in my opinion. I absolutely love how they drift into the heavier sound throughout and in my opinion even start getting into the Dream Theater range in heaviness; not bad at all. Hear Shadow of the Sun on YouTube. Image
From: Audioslave ; Year: 2002; Genre: Alternative Rock I was wanting to pick another song for today, but since an Audioslave song came on the radio I couldn't get them out of my mind. 3505. Paul & Linda McCartney - Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey

Image
From: Ram ; Year: 1971; Genre: Pop/Rock There is some frying pans in my kitchen that rattle when you walk that have been making a percussive sound exactly to a what is heard at a point in this song, and thus every time I'm cooking I've had this song on my mind; so I'm picking it. For a easily digestible pop/rock track it's really good and one that I do like. Hear Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey on YouTube. 3504. Dire Straits - Private Investigations

Image
From: Love Over Gold ; Year: 1982; Genre: Progressive Rock In the mood for something from Dire Straits today; this rather pretty and heavy acoustic/electric track seemed like a good match. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing is just immaculate throughout. The classical acoustic mixes in really well with the synth and electric guitar towards the end. Hear Private Investigations on YouTube. 3503. Three Dog Night - The Show Must Go On

Image
From: Hard Labor ; Year: 1974; Genre: Rock/Pop After hear Three Dog Night's version of the Leo Sayer hit I just had to pick it. It's somewhere between a normal mainstream rock track and a novelty track, especially with using Julius Fučík's famous Entrance of the Gladiators theme, which because of its use in the circus, we associate it with clowns and their theatrics. Overall the song is done extremely well and help along the story told in the lyrics. Hear The Show Must Go On on YouTube. Image
From: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme , Year: 1966; Genre: Folk This song was on my mind when getting ready to make my pick; I've always like it, so it's the one I'm going with. 3501. Earth, Wind & Fire - Bad Tune

Image
From: Earth, Wind & Fire ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Psychedelic Soul Had Earth, Wind & Fire on the brain today; though they'd make a great pick for this Funky Friday ,which is my 180th straight. Don't let the title fool you, this is an excellent track that has elements from not just funk and soul, but a lot of jazz and even some rock. Hear Bad Tune on YouTube. 3500. Hawkwind - Steppenwolf

Image
From: Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music ; Year: 1976; Genre: Progressive Rock/Space Rock 3500 songs down and more coming; these "rollover picks" are just flying by now it seems like to me. Anyway, I wanted to pick something apropos, but just couldn't think of anything, so I just picked this almost 10 minute opus of strange music based on the novel of the same name, which features Robert Calvert on lead vocals, which only adds even more awesomeness to the strangeness of the song. Hear Steppenwolf on YouTube. 3499. The Guess Who - Share the Land

Image
From: Share the Land ; Year: 1970; Genre: Rock Dang, this one brings back a lot of memories, both real old and newer ones. Share the Land is kind of an idealistic song; the subject matter has a very honest and positive message, which many cynical pragmatists like to lampoon and such, but it's still one I like a lot. However, the twin lead guitars and the great way it was written and arranged is what I like about it the most. Hear Share the Land on YouTube. 3498. The Supremes (Diana Ross & the Supremes) - Back in My Arms Again

Image
From: More Hits by The Supremes ; Year: 1965; Genre: R&B/Motown I decided today to "spin" my playlist and get a random song to pick; and wot an amazing song I came up with. Whilst it's categorized as such, calling anything by The Supremes just a "pop" song just not doing it justice. The Funk Brothers are perfect as ever as are the incomparable vocals of The Supremes; a match made in Heaven. Hear Back in My Arms Again on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Toto - Hydra My song pick two years ago today: Soundgarden - Hunted Down My song pick three years ago today: The (Detroit) Spinners - Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me, Girl My song pick four years ago today: John Fogerty - Rock and Roll Girls My song pick five years ago today: Dream Theater - On the Backs of Angels My song pick six years ago today: Hawkwind - Right to Decide My song pick seven years ago today: Survivor - The Eye of the Tiger My song pick eight years ago

3497. April Wine - I Like to Rock

Image
From: Harder..... Faster ; Year: 1979; Genre: Hard Rock It's yet another one of those picks where I had the song in my head and decided to choose it; so wot else is new. :P Anyway, I've always really like this straight up hard rock track with that driving bass and wailing guitars; definitely a good one to start off a busy workweek. 3496. Jethro Tull - Lights Out

Image
From: Nightcap ; Year: 1993 (1981); Genre: Progressive Rock Had the Nightcap album on my mind today and this buried gem off from the early 1980s Broadsword recording session just seemed to fit my mood for this pick the best. What really has me is the music on this one that's a mix between blues rock, 70's prog rock, and new wave; Martin Barre really shines on the guitar on this one. I still to this day do not know why some of these songs were not released properly; some are a lot better that the material they did release on albums. Hear Lights Out on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Throw-N-Down the Funk My song pick two years ago today: Foreigner - At War With the World My song pick three years ago today: King Crimson - Pictures of a City (including "42nd at Treadmill") My song pick four years ago today: Neil Young - Four Strong Winds My song pick five years ago today: Jethro Tull - Jump Start

3495. Berlin - No More Words

Image
From: Love Life ; Year: 1984; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop Yesterday while out and about I had this synthpop single from Berlin come on and I thought it would make a great pick. 3494. Return to Forever - Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant (Parts 1+2)

Image
From: Romantic Warrior ; Year: 1976; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Progressive Rock This track, which is like a mashup of jazz, rock, funk, and classical was perfect for my mood today on this Funky Friday . Whilst it's less full-on funk and more like a very jazzy Rush instrumental; this one's just too funky to not pick it. That ever changing funky rhythm that Stanley Clarke and Lenny White lay down is just too infectious. For that matter the entire band show off their chops in this 12 minute epic instrumental fight song. Hear Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant (Parts 1+2) on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Plant Music My song pick two years ago today: Luther Vandross - Never Too Much My song pick three years ago today: Jethro Tull - Living in the Past My song pick four years ago today: Hawkwind - It Is the Business of the Future to Be Dangerous My song pick five years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Fantasy My song pick six years ago tod

3493. Bob Dylan - If Not For You

Image
From: New Morning ; Year: 1970; Genre: Folk Rock Dang, it's next to impossible finding a version of Bob Dylan's original online at the moment, but I still want to pick it anyway. Most would either remember George Harrison's cover or perhaps Olivia Newton John's; I still like Bob Dylan's the best. Hear a live version of If Not For You featuring George Harrison on YouTube. 3492. Fleetwood Mac - Gold Dust Woman

Image
From: Rumours ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock Had a bunch of Fleetwood Mac on my mind this morning. I really don't know if there's a "dud" on this album or not, but there's certainly a lot of great material. This is one I've always loved; the way they blend country and folk elements into their rock sound is really good. Hear Gold Dust Woman on YouTube. 3491. Paul Simon - Slip Slidin' Away

Image
From: Greatest Hits, Etc. ; Year: 1977; Genre: Folk Rock/Soft Rock Got myself in the mood for something from Paul Simon; since this is one of my favourite songs from Paul Simon's solo work I'm surprised it took this long to pick it. Slip Slidin' Away , whilst being rather mellow, the polyphonic arrangement is something to behold if you listen to everything going on. The Oak Ridge Boys providing the backing vocals really helped to make that wall of sound so perfect, especially in the bass end of the vocals. Hear Slip Slidin' Away on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Kiss - Strutter My song pick two years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze My song pick three years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Fan the Fire My song pick four years ago today: Queensrÿche - At The Edge My song pick five years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Rock Is My Life, and This Is My Song My song pick six years ago today: Genesis - Watc

3490. Phantom Blue - A Little Evil

Image
From: Built to Perform ; Year: 1993; Genre: Metal I hadn't heard this one in quite a while; upon hearing it I knew I wanted to choose it today. 3489. Black Sabbath - After Forever

Image
From: Master of Reality ; Year: 1971; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal Yesterday I learned that Black Sabbath is calling it quits after all these years; at least no one's dying, (as far as I know anyway). Probably they've announced this a while ago, but I'm not much on top of things as some are. Anyway, this is another one I absolutely love off of one of my top favourite albums of theirs; music, lyrics, composition; yeah, it's all great. Hear After Forever on YouTube. 3486. The Allman Brothers Band - Statesboro Blues

Image
From: At Fillmore East ; Year: 1971; Genre: Blues Rock/Southern Rock Yesterday I learned of the passing of legendary drummer Butch Trucks , I don't really know wot to say... dang. Both him and Jaimoe are basically two of the greatest drummers of all time and have influenced the course of music for the last several decades and we will be feeling their influence for many, many years to come. Whenever I think of the two of them I'm immediately thinking of At Fillmore East and the musical clinic those two put on; it only seemed right to pick one the more legendary songs from the album to mark today. This is a blues originally done by Blind Willie McTell; and if you love music you should know this bluesy rock version. Hear Statesboro Blues on YouTube. 3485. Duran Duran - Save a Prayer

Image
From: Rio ; Year: 1982; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop I have no reason why I'm picking this song; I like it and apparently I haven't picked it yet, so that's reason enough I guess.
