6836. Porcupine Tree - My Ashes

Image
From: Fear of a Blank Planet ; Year: 2009; Genre: Progressive Rock This album was playing in my mind last night and this morning, which is a very good thing; a lot of amazing music to bounce around one's skull. This is a nice, shorter, (if you can call five-minutes short, right?), piece of music that has a very heavy, maudlin feeling to it; very beautiful.    Hear My Ashes on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - America     My song pick 2 years ago today: Edgar Winter - Tobacco Road     My song pick 3 years ago today: The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'   My song pick 4 years ago today: Eddie Grant - Electric Avenue   My song pick 5 years ago today: Melvins - The Mechanical Bride   My song pick 6 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Little Gandy Dancer   My song pick 7 years ago today: Rush - War Paint My song pick 8 years ago today: Cr...

6388. Porcupine Tree - Rats Return

Image
From: Closure/Continuation ; Year: 2022; Genre: Progressive Metal Whilst I have stated prior that I really have no real idea as to wot's going on in music/film/or popular culture I was still taken aback that this newest album from Porcupine Tree slid under my radar so to speak for about 2 1/2 years. Although since I was under the impression that Steve Wilson ended the band back about 2010 or so it shouldn't have. Wotever the case, I'm overjoyed to find this new material, and have to say that it is some of the best material I've heard from an older band recently. Anyway, this one is a heavier song both musically and lyrically with themes and symbolism that lines up with the anxiety many are and have been experiencing during the current/recent global political climate.   Hear Rats Return on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Steeleye Span - The Wee Free Men   My song pick 2 years ago today: Icehouse - Trojan Blue   My song pick 3 years ago today...

5869. Porcupine Tree - Strip the Soul

Image
From: In Absentia ; Year: 2002; Genre: Progressive Rock Thought I would listen to some more PT today; In Absentia seemed like the best one for me to play. While not being the longest track on the disc, which is usually the one I gravitate towards with bands/artist such as this, it still clocks in at over seven minutes, so it's not a short "top 40" radio-friendly song. Strip the Soul is yet another one where they go to some interesting places sonically; one highlight for me is in a guitar solo that has apparent influence by Tom Morello and his "guitar record scratch" technique.   Hear Strip the Soul on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road   My song pick 2 years ago today: Return to Forever - Majestic Dance   My song pick 3 years ago today: Manfred Mann's Earth Band - As Above So Below   My song pick 4 years ago today: Parliament - P Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up) My song pick 5 years ago today: Peter Frampt...

5670. Porcupine Tree - Shallow

Image
From: Deadwing ; Year: 2005; Genre: Progressive Metal/Alternative Metal Enjoying this post-Christmas Monday actually by listening to this Porcupine Tree record, which is one of my many favourites from the band. This track, Shallow , was apparently also a hit single, which is surprising seeing as anything "progressive" usually gets marginalized and hammered by critics, but this song and entire album for that matter has amazing production quality and the song writing is exquisite as always from anything Steven Wilson touches, or so it would seem.   Hear Shallow on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Herbie Hancock - Watermelon Man   My song pick 2 years ago today: Carmen - Stepping Stone   My song pick 3 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Joan Crawford   My song pick 4 years ago today: Frank Zappa - Theme From The 3rd Movement Of Sinister Footwear My song pick 5 years ago today: The Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Loving My song pick 6 year...

5255. Porcupine Tree - What Happens Now?

Image
From: Nil Recurring ; Year: 2007; Genre: Progressive Rock Recently I discovered that next year there will be a brand new Porcupine Tree album released, apparently sometime in June. It got me wanting to choose another song from the band today; this one that closes out their '07 EP Nil Recurring just seemed perfect for the occasion.   Hear What Happens Now? on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Egg - Contrasong   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ian Matthews - Don't Hang Up Your Dancing Shoes   My song pick 3 years ago today: Huey Lewis & The News - Hip To Be Square My song pick 4 years ago today: Rammstein - Wo Bist Du My song pick 5 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Spyroid My song pick 6 years ago today: Joe Tex - I Gotcha My song pick 7 years ago today: Weather Report - Crystal My song pick 8 years ago today: Gerry Rafferty - Night Owl My song pick 9 years ago today: Duke Ellington - It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got Th...

4655. Porcupine Tree - Phase I

Image
From: Voyage 34 ; Year: 2000 (1992); Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Progressive Rock As with a lot of Steven Wilson's music, this one really expands the definition of music itself a bit as they take the listener on a psychedelic/trance journey musically. Kind of a fun piece to listen to, especially with headphones on. Hear Phase I on YouTube. Image
From: Hand. Cannot. Erase. ; Year: 2015; Genre: Progressive Rock Been hearing a lot of Steve Wilson's music lately on my playlist, so I'm picking another one of his songs today.
