2589 Megadeth - Seven

Image
From: Risk ; Year: 1999; Genre: Heavy Metal Whelp, tomorrow will mark the seventh year that I've been doing this blog; it's definitely gettin' up there in years it is. Today I thought I would pick an apropos track to mark the occasion a day early; I'll, of course be marking it tomorrow too. Anyway, this whole album is usually thought of as Dave Mustaine and Megedeth's weakest album, and rightly so. I remember picking it up brand new the day it came out along with a few other of their records; to say the least it was certainly a different sounding effort and definitely not their normal thrash metal. It always makes me feel good knowing that I'm one of a much smaller number to own it; it kind of makes me feel special. Okay then, back to the song, this is one written by David Elleffson and has a bit of a classic heavy metal sound to it. Hear Seven on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Stratovarius - Under Flaming Skies My song pick two years ago

2588 Journey - Wheel in the Sky

Image
From: Infinity ; Year: 1978; Genre: Rock After watching some stuff on television about Journey it got me in the mood for some of their songs. I noticed that I hadn't picked this one, which is one of my favourites among their more popular pieces, and I really like Neal Schon's guitar playing in this one; that main riff in particular is infectious. Hear Wheel in the Sky on YouTube. Image
From: Jungle Fever ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk/Disco It's another Friday and I've almost gone a full year of making Funky Friday picks, (this is my 50th by the way), so here's another one. 2585 Rush - Halo Effect

Image
From: Clockwork Angels ; Year: 2012; Genre: Progressive Rock I've been enjoying listening to Clockwork Angels a bit over the last few days and it seems like as good of a time as any to pick another track off the album. This is an a-typical newer sounding hard rocker from the band, but it still has some classic Rush sound and lyrics too. Hear Halo Effect on YouTube. 2584 Genesis - Duchess

Image
From: Duke ; Year: 1980; Genre: Progressive Rock I felt like song Genesis this morning; something from the Phil Collins as lead singer in particular, so for me it was natural to pick something off of Duke, which is among of my favourite albums from Genesis. I love how dynamic this song is musically, which is my the best aspect in my opinion, although the story about the career of an unnamed diva told in the lyrics is pretty good too. 2581 Jethro Tull - Kelpie

Image
From: Stormwatch (Remaster) ; Year: 1979; Genre: Hard Rock/Progressive Rock The other day whilst out and about on the road this track came on my iPod, which is among my favourite of Jethro Tull's rarer songs. The music is a great fusion of traditional and hard rock elements; I especially love Martin Barre's wailing guitar and all of the instrument solos. It really helps in telling a tale of the mythical Celtic beastie waterhorse that liked to prey on unknowing people. Hear Kelpie on YouTube. It's a very interesting piece of music, but definitely not for the pop aficionado. Hear Darkness 11/11 on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Police - Walking on the Moon My song pick two years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Misty Mountain Hop My song pick three years ago today: Émile Waldteufel - Op. 232 - Rococo-Polka My song pick four years ago today: Sky - Sarabande My song pick five years ago today: Lynyrd Skynyrd - On The Hunt My song pick six years ago today: Ian Anderson - A Better Moon

Image
From: Head On ; Year: 1975; Genre: Hard Rock Yesterday and this morning I've had this song running through my mind, so as normal I took it as a sign I needed to pick it. This is another great riff driven hard rock track and also still one of my favourites off of the Head On album. I love the way they play on this one and the music is great. Image
From: Wolfmother ; Year: 2005; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal I heard this track again the other day and felt like adding it to my list too; it's a fun song to rock out to. I love the sound of this song and the band, which sounds like it came out of the early 1970s and is not out of place with the likes of Black Sabbath, Cream, or Led Zeppelin of the era. Hear Woman on YouTube. Image
From: Crimson & Clover ; Year: 1969; Genre: Psychedelic Rock I heard this track come on the radio the other day whilst on the road and thought it would make a good song pick. 2567 Jethro Tull - Working John, Working Joe

Image
From: A ; Year: 1980; Genre: Progressive Rock/Electronic Rock Oh noes! I'm picking yet another band from the Jethro Tull! Oi vay, what a huge surprise.  :P Anyway, as per usual this song was running through my mind, so I picked it; no other surprise there. I don't know why, but I've always loved the A album where most 'Tull fans despise it; while it's by no means their bast effort, it's still a great record that I usually listen to all the way through. This song is one that heralds back to the economic problems of the late 1970s and early 1980s a tells the trials and tribulations of a working class Joe Schmoe and an upper class individual; a very neat track and the music is great too albeit with a lot of electronica. Hear Working John, Working Joe on YouTube. This is one of The Doors' most distinctive sounding songs, which is a cover of a Kurt Weill song made from a Bertoit Brecht poem. Image
From: A New World Record ; Year: 1976; Genre: Symphonic Rock/Rock 'n Roll I felt like some ELO today; no other reason for pickin' this one except I also like the back.
