6823. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Moon, Turn the Tides....Gently Gently Away

Image
From: Electric Ladyland ; Year: 1968; Genre: Psychedelic Rock Wanted to pick something "out there" from Jimi Hendrix; this short, (less-than-a-minute), piece with only odd sounds just seemed perfect for the bill.   Hear Moon, Turn the Tides....Gently Gently Away on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Chicken Shack - Daughter on the Hillside     My song pick 2 years ago today: Jerry Reed - Don't Think Twice, It's Alright   My song pick 3 years ago today: Fleet Foxes - Innocent Son   My song pick 4 years ago today: Aphrodite's Child - The Four Horsemen   My song pick 5 years ago today: Gap Band - You Dropped a Bomb on Me   My song pick 6 years ago today: Barenaked Ladies - Shoe Box   My song pick 7 years ago today: Jigsaw - Mystic Harmony My song pick 8 years ago today: Chet Atkins - The Girl Friend of the Whirling Dervish My song pick 9 years ago today: Alice in Chains - What The Hell Have I My song pick 10...

6632. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Red House

Image
From: Are You Experienced ; Year: 1967; Genre: Blues This amazing, classic blues just happened to dislodge itself from my brain today in time for today's pick; and boy, is this a great one! Whilst not being the normal full-throttle heavy acid rock sound filled with mindblowing virtuosity that some might be used to, this passionate blues is every bit the equal or more than his most noted hit tracks. The guitar playing is as outstanding as it can be, but wot really blows me away every time I hear it is his vocals; for me words cannot express how great his voice is on this one.   Hear Red House on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Thermals - St. Rosa and the Swallows     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Hollies - Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dio - Rainbow in the Dark   My song pick 4 years ago today: War - You Got the Power   My song pick 5 years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - New W...

6545. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice

Image
From: Smash Hits ; Year: 1968 (1967); Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Hard Rock Felt like something from Jimi Hendrix once more, but by no means the last time.... This spaced out piece of heavy psychedelia was originally the b-side of a U.K. single of the song Burning of the Midnight Lamp , which is one of my top favourite songs from the legend. Whilst the title of the track is an overt reference to two widely used hallucinogens, the overall musicianship and performance make this one far more than it would appear superficially.   Hear The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs - May I     My song pick 2 years ago today: Alley Pat - Pat's Rubber Band   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Doors - Love Street   My song pick 4 years ago today: Benny Carter - Cotton Tail   My song pick 5 years ago today: Mr. Big - Defying Gravity   My song pick 6 years ago tod...

6469. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - I Don't Live Today

Image
From: Are You Experienced ; Year: 1967; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock This is one of the songs that if people have never suffered from depression or related mental illness they might not be able to understand it. Probably would just sound like a some out there psychedelic sounds or such. In reality it is written/composed masterfully in a complex and intricate manner both musically and lyrically and is definitely among Jimi Hendrix's many songs that speaks to me on a very deep and personal way.    Hear I Don't Live Today on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Vanilla Fudge - The Windmills Of Your Mind     My song pick 2 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Last Frontier   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Stone Free   My song pick 4 years ago today: Ebony Rhythm Band - Drugs Ain't Cool   My song pick 5 years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven   My song pick 6 years ago today: Th...

Image

5980. Jimi Hendrix - In From the Storm

Image
From: The Cry of Love ; Year: 1971; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal Had Hendrix on the 'ol brain once again.... This is a rather hard rocker from his posthumous record The Cry of Love ; a great track indeed. I deeply wish that he could've lived longer... God only knows where music would be today if that was the case.   Hear In From the Storm on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dazz Band - Magnetized   My song pick 3 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Another Rainy Night (Without You)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Every Home is Wired   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Cranberries - Dreams My song pick 6 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Queen of the Reich My song pick 7 years ago today: The Human League - (Keep Feeling) Fascination My song pick 8 years ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - The Endless Enigma (Part 1)/Fugue/The Endless En...

5784. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - One Rainy Wish

Image
From: Axis: Bold as Love ; Year: 1967; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock I find myself lately really listening close to every aspect of Jimi Hendrix's songs whilst I just let the record play and I can tell ya, there's always something new and truly remarkable, it would seem, that catches my ear. Without a doubt, as a musician, singer, songwriter, poet, etc... you cannot overstate what he and his bandmates did for music. This is another one of those songs after you get done listening to it you go back and realize that it's just over three-and-a-half minutes in length, but you could swear that it was over ten minutes; there's not one weak point of this beautiful track.   Hear One Rainy Wish on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: April Wine - Cat's Claw   My song pick 2 years ago today: Alphaville - Big In Japan   My song pick 3 years ago today: Primus - Mary the Ice Cube   My song pick 4 years ago today: Mastodon - Andromeda My song pick 5...

5571. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 1983... (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)

Image
From: Electric Ladyland ; Year: 1968; Genre: Psychedelic Rock It's quite sad and downright criminal how difficult it has been made to find the art of such a musical trailblazer with such a short and brilliant career legally online, but hopefully once the talentless freeloader(s) who(m) control his catalogue die and are long forgotten dust, Jimi Hendrix's music will endure. Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I just get annoyed by this a lot. Like the majority of his work, this is definitely an interesting piece of music across the board with sound and ideas never heard prior, however heavily used ever since.   Hear a demo of the song on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Toad The Wet Sprocket - Something's Always Wrong   My song pick 2 years ago today: Uriah Heep - Love or Nothing   My song pick 3 years ago today: Waylander - Twin Fires of Beltíne   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - Tai Shan My song pick 5 years ago today: Jaco Pastoriu...

5451. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Stone Free

Image
From: Are You Experienced ; Year: 1967; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock Been having music from Jimi Hendrix on my mind for the last couple weeks or so and thought I'd choose another one of his songs. 5347. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

Image
From: Electric Ladyland ; Year: 1968; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Hard Rock/Blues Rock Had Jimi Hendrix and his band of renown on my mind yesterday and today; this song in particular was on my mind, so I decided that I should choose it. This is, of course, very much a legendary song that was based on the track Voodoo Chile , which was also on this record and caused some confusion do to the similar title.    Hear Voodoo Child (Slight Return) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Chet Atkins and Merle Travis - Nine Pound Hammer   My song pick 2 years ago today: Blondie - One Way or Another   My song pick 3 years ago today: Faith No More - The Real Thing My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Doctor To My Disease My song pick 5 years ago today: Dire Straits - Private Investigations My song pick 6 years ago today: Deep Purple - Hallelujah My song pick 7 years ago today: The Rhythm Machine - Put a Smile on Time My song pick 8 years...

Image
From: Are You Experienced ; Year: 1967; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock I "spun the wheel" today and ended up choosing another Jimi Hendrix tune; another song I was surprised I had not chosen yet. 4147. Jimi Hendrix Experience - Burning of the Midnight Lamp

Image
From: Electric Ladyland ; Year: 1968; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock I had some fun playing along with some of Jimi Hendix's music last night and still had his music on my mind when I went to pick a song today. This is one of his songs I really like; a beautiful composition that's dynamic across the board. Heck, and you get to hear the legend himself play the harpsichord; how awesome is that? 2809 Jimi Hendrix Experience - Hey Joe

Image
From: Are You Experienced ; Year: 1967; Genre: Hard Rock/Blues Rock Getting ready to head home today and I thought since we're still in Seattle I should at least pick a track from one of the city's native sons, and what better than a song from the incomparable Jimi Hendrix. This is the most popular version of the often-covered rock standard and a great track to boot. Hear Hey Joe on YouTube. 2752 The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze

Image
From: Are You Experienced ; Year: 1967; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Hard Rock I had this classic Hendrix tune running through my mind this morning; I thought I had already picked it, but surprisingly not. Along with many of his fans, this is one my personal favourites from Jimi Hendrix; a great tune that really gets the blood moving. It's a shame though with how short the song is, but maybe that's part of what makes it special. Hear Purple Haze on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Fan the Fire My song pick two years ago today: Queensrÿche - At The Edge My song pick three years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Rock Is My Life, and This Is My Song My song pick four years ago today: Genesis - Watcher of the Skies My song pick five years ago today: Jim Croce - These Dreams My song pick six years ago today: Alice Cooper - No More Mr. Nice Guy My song pick seven years ago today: Savatage - Tonight He Grins Again

2551 The Jimi Hendrix Experience - ...And the gods Made Love

Image
From: Electric Ladyland ; Year: 1968; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock Having issues again with my internet today, so I'm making a brief pick. This is one of my favorites from Jimi Hendrix; a nice short instrumental solo in only the way he could do it, which serves as a great intro to the Electric Ladyland album. 2301 The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower

Image
From: Electric Ladyland ; Year: 1968; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock After hearing one of his songs last night I felt like picking one. 2203 The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Third Stone From the Sun

Image
From: Are You Experienced ; Year: 1967; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Psychedelic Rock This is a rather interesting piece of music that if I haven't, I really should've already picked. It's an extremely experimental song in many ways; fusing all sorts of music and ideas together. Really, because of this it can fit into many and no categories at the same time, but whatever the case it's an incredible track all the same. Hear Third Stone From the Sun on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Black Sabbath - Fairies Wear Boots My song pick two years ago today: Tesla - Forever More My song pick three years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick My song pick four years ago today: Bob Marley & The Wailers - Three Little Birds My song pick five years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Bad Moon Rising

Image
1633 The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Manic Depression From: Are You Experienced , Year: 1967 Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock/Blues Rock I'm on to my fourth pick of my mystery theme week. This is a rather interesting and quite a fun song to play along with. I absolutely love how it was constructed; while on the surface it sounds and feels a bit disjointed, it fits together very nicely to make a truly awesome song. Hear Manic Depression on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Jon Oliva's Pain - Through the Eyes of the King My song pick two years ago today: Nora Bayes - The Japanese Sandman My song pick three years ago today: Queen - We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions My song pick four years ago today: The Little River Band - Reminiscing +
