2745 Carly Simon - You’re so Vain

Image
From: No Secrets ; Year: 1972; Genre: Pop Rock Here's another one that I've been meaning to pick for a few years now, but I kept getting sidetracked for one reason or another. This is one I've always liked since I was really little; it brings back a lot of memories indeed. I've always been mostly attracted by the music in this one, but the vocals are an aspect I like too; a great, and pretty timeless track. Hear You're So Vain on YouTube. Image
From: Gordon ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Rock Whilst waking up this morning I had this rather cute song running through my mind. I've actually been meaning to pick it off and on for a few years now, but always something else got in the way and it retreated to the recesses of my cranium. Image
From: Traveling Without Moving ; Year: 1996; Genre: Acid Jazz/Funk I got in the mood for something from Jamiroquai last night and this morning and thought I would select another one of their songs for today's pick. 2741 Ian Anderson - Doggerland

Image
From: Homo Erraticus ; Year: 2014; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock I was thinking about this song this morning and decided to pick it. Doggerland is the song that begins the narrative concept and tells the tail of prehistoric man living in the ancient land, which is at present below the North Sea , where they inhabited before it was flooded and are eventually forced to emigrate to what is the present day British Isles. Among the heavier tracks on the record, the music is quite nice too; driven by both Florian Opahle's screaming guitar and John O'Hara's keyboards. Hear Doggerland on YouTube. Image
From: Sticky Fingers ; Year: 1971; Genre: Hard Rock The other day Woordenaar picked a Rolling Stones track and I thought I would follow suit. This is one of my favourite popular singles from the band; it's got so much raw sound and lyrics throughout and also danceable to boot. Image
From: Faster Than the Speed of Night ; Year: 1983; Genre: Hard Rock Early in the morning I had this song running through my mind, which is one of the deeper tracks I've always liked from Bonnie Tyler. 2735 Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears

Image
From: No More Tears ; Year: 1991; Genre: Metal I had a different Ozzy Osbourne song running through my mind this morning, but unfortunately I had already picked it. After looking what I had already chosen from him I was much more surprised to see that this one was not among the ones I had already picked, so it was only obvious which one I was blogging about today. Anyway, this has always been one of my top favourites from Ozzy's solo work; everything from that driving ostinato bass intro/line to Zakk Wylde's blazing guitar is done almost to perfection. And of course Ozzy's vocals and presence fills it out amazingly well. Hear No More Tears on YouTube. 2733 Weather Report - Predator

Image
From: Domino Theory ; Year: 1984; Genre: Jazz Fusion I'm definitely in the mood for some Weather Report today, and something from their somewhat later period to be exact. This is one from saxophonist Wayne Shorter's pen; while the sound is very 1980s and dated for that time, it's still a really good song with some excellent musicianship all around. Hear Predator on YouTube. Image
From: Fly Like An Eagle ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Country I was thinking about some Steve Miller Band today, and had this song amongst others going through my mind, so I'm making it my pick. It's a pretty neat country/rock crossover with just a tinge of blues thrown in for good measure. Mostly it's driven by John McFee on the dobro as well as the great bass from Lonnie Turner. 2730 The Nashville Allstars - Opus de Funk

Image
From: After the Riot at Newport ; Year: 1960; Genre: Jazz Even though it's not exactly in the "funk" genre, this very jazzy piece has "funk" in the title, so I'm making it my Funky Friday pick this week anyway. As the album's title states, this music featuring some of the greatest Nashville artists of the time, it was performed and recorded at an impromptu concert held after the cancellation of their performance at the Newport Jazz Festival due to a "major disturbance" occurring that year's events. This concert was held actually on the back porch of a rented manor house at the last minute. What resulted was an amazing classic and historic jazz album featuring the likes of Floyd Cramer, Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph, and Hank Garland among others. Hear Opus de Funk on YouTube. It starts at the 14:30 mark. My song pick a year ago today: Rush - Freeze (Part IV of 'Fear') My song pick two years ago today: Chris Isaak - Wic

2729 Rare Earth - Warm Ride

Image
From: Band Together ; Year: 1978; Genre: Disco/Funk When making my pick this morning I had some music from Rare Earth running through my mind. I decided to choose something different, something that's not what you think of when someone mentions the band. This is a cover of a Bee Gees song and a bit of a hit for the band at the time. Not a bad song at all, but the sound is very dated to the late 70s era however; it still has that Rare Earth punch though. Hear Warm Ride on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Pallas - Warriors My song pick two years ago today: Soundgarden - Flower My song pick three years ago today: Northern Kings - Wanted Dead or Alive My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - Bungle in the Jungle My song pick five years ago today: Edvard Grieg - Op. 54, No.3 - The March of the Trolls ( Troldtog ) My song pick six years ago today: Rob Zombie - Dragula My song pick seven years ago today: Tears for Fears - Mad World

2727 Soundgarden - Outshined

Image
From: Badmotorfinger ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge I had another song by another band in mind for today, but I kept on having Soundgarden playing through my mind. So, as I always do, I took it as a sign to pick a song from the band. This is a pretty popular track off of their third album, just as the band was starting to see its full success. Image
From: Living in the Past ; Year: 1972 (1968); Genre: Blues Rock It the mood for yet another 'Tull pick, yep... what else is new, right? Anyway, this is one of my favourites from the band's early days; it was an early single in the British blues rock style.
