6947. Yothu Yindi - Treaty

Image
From: Tribal Voice ; Year: 1991; Genre: Indigenous Australian Rock/New Wave It is always a bit perplexing when a song is playing in your head and you cannot identify the song or the artist. It took a little bit of sleuthing, but I was able to track it down after I realized that I had heard a version of it in the 1990s comedy movie Encino Man . It is quite a unique and truly awesome song; actually the same can be said for the band too. Being a blended group of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians makes the term "unique" kind of an understatement; have never heard a group that sounds even close. Of course, as always, I love being exposed to something different, so they are one I immediately liked. Anyway, whilst the radio edit of Treaty put the band in the spotlight, I actually like the original album version a bit more, but either one is great.    Hear Treaty on YouTube.   Hear the radio edit on YouTube.         My song p...

6850. Midnight Oil - Blossom and Blood

Image
From: Species Deceases ; Year: 1985; Genre: Alternative Rock/Punk Don't really need a reason to pick a song from my absolute favourite Australian band, but decided on going with one off of one of the EPs. Just about all of the four tracks on Species Deceases still get air play to this day. The high energy punk attitude and feel throughout this one in particular just gets you riled up and singing along.   Hear Blossom and Blood on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Trio of Doom - Para Oriente     My song pick 2 years ago today: Los Lobos - Don't Worry Baby     My song pick 3 years ago today: Lou Rawls - Three O'Clock in the Morning   My song pick 4 years ago today: Funkadelic - First Ya Gotta Shake The Gate   My song pick 5 years ago today: Curved Air - Easy   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Temptations - (I Know) I'm Losing You   My song pick 7 years ago today: Neil Young - Heart of Gold My song pick ...

6833. Blue Öyster Cult - We Gotta Get Out of This Place

Image
From: Ghost Stories ; Year: 2024; Genre: Hard Rock Just happened to have BÖC on the brain and was listening to their latest album release, Ghost Stories , which is a collection of remastered and unreleased tracks from the late 1970s to early 1980s. I'm not 100% sure, but close to it, from all I can tell, this cover of the immortal emotional song by The Animals, is a remix/remaster from Blue Öyster Cult's '78 live album Some Enchanted Evening .   Hear We Gotta Get Out of This Place on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Tim Hardin - Reason to Believe     My song pick 2 years ago today: Eric Burdon and War - Spirit     My song pick 3 years ago today: Jigsaw - Life Insurance   My song pick 4 years ago today: Tesla - Edison's Medicine   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Grateful Dead - Throwing Stones   My song pick 6 years ago today: Redbone - When You Got Trouble   My song pick 7 years ago today: Blue Öyster ...

6816. Rage Against the Machine - Township Rebellion

Image
From: Rage Against the Machine ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Metal/Rap This is one of those records that has continued to reverberate almost 35 years since its release and counting; will probably still be totally relevant for another century or two. I absolutely love how their music is not stuck as a signpost from the 1990s, but feels and sounds as new as when released. The only real sad part about their music is that the same BS they were raging against is still happening and in some cases has gotten a lot worse. C'est la vie .   Hear Township Rebellion on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Cameo - Slyde     My song pick 2 years ago today: Savatage - Miles Away   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Eagles - New Kid in Town   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)   My song pick 5 years ago today: Positive Force - We Got The Funk   My song pick 6 years ago today:...

6651. Bucks Fizz - The Land of Make Believe

Image
From: Are You Ready ; Year: 1982; Genre: Pop Had not heard this song in ages, but just happened to hear it the other day and thought it would make an excellent pick. To my ears on this track, they remind me a great deal of ABBA, which considering the era of its writing and recording is not a surprise. Wot is of interest though is that this very upbeat poppy tune is actually a political protest song. Either way you look at it/listen to it you should still enjoy it in some regard.   Hear The Land of Make Believe on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Tesla - All the Young Dudes     My song pick 2 years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - Underdog   My song pick 3 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Morning Rain   My song pick 4 years ago today: Faith No More - Naked in Front of the Computer   My song pick 5 years ago today: The B-52's - Deadbeat Club   My song pick 6 years ago today: Pallas - Crown of Thorns   My son...

6630. Midnight Oil - Sometimes

Image
From Diesel and Dust ; Year: 1987; Genre: Alternative Rock The other day I happened upon a "top 15" list of the greatest Australian bands/artists. As usual I figured it would be a popularity contest, which, of course it was, but was still a bit shocked seeing my favourite band from "Downunda" making a paltry number 10 on the list. Now, I know I am biased, but without a doubt such a influential band both musically and socially should be in the top 5 at least. Anyway, as always, it gave me the itch to put some of their albums on, which Diesel and Dust has to be among them. Sometimes is the final track on the original record and is a perfect song to bring such a masterpiece to a close.   Hear Sometimes on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Ian Anderson - Per Errationes Ad Astra (2024)     My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - Field Maneuvers   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dick Dale and his Del-Tones - The Victor   My so...

6511. Rush - For What It's Worth

Image
From: Feedback ; Year: 2004; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Hard Rock Surprised once more about a song that I thought I had already picked. This is the often-covered protest song originally done by Buffalo Springfield and written by Stephen Stills. The iconic power trio of Rush did an amazing job on this one keeping the original soul when they, without a doubt, could've just pushed it too far with their extreme abilities as musicians. However, this entire album was more of a tribute to songs that meant something deep to them when they were young musicians.   Hear For What It's Worth on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Joe Walsh - Rocky Mountain Way     My song pick 2 years ago today: Glass Hammer - The Conflict   My song pick 3 years ago today: Van Der Graaf Generator - Scorched Earth   My song pick 4 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - I Can Feel It In My Bones   My song pick 5 years ago today: Return to Forever - Interp...

6387. Lighthouse - Man, Woman, Child

Image
From: Good Day ; Year: 1974; Genre: Psychedelic Rock Thought I would check out this record, which was Lighthouse's final studio album for over 20 years when they released Song of the Ages in 1996. I can say it is really odd not hearing the horn section and/or strings in the dominant role that I am used to hearing on their songs; I always categorized them in my mind with bands such as Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. I do not know much about the band other than I really like most of wot I have heard, but it seems that they might've abandoned that core sound for this record. This is perhaps a sign of the band calling it quits after this one; from wot I have read they did tour through 1976 and did not really get together until the reunion in the early/mid 1990s.   Hear Man, Woman, Child on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Cameo - Attitude   My song pick 2 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - The Lights Go Down   My song pick ...

6371. Genesis - Get 'Em Out by Friday

Image
From: Foxtrot ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock Listened to Genesis' Foxtrot album again yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it once more. Got me thinking about Genesis and how, as not amongst the most rabid of fans of the band, but I really enjoy their music a lot, how I never really got into the whole loving/hating one period of the band due to the different comings and goings of band members and thus the contrasting styles from one decade to the next. That being said, they're probably one of the most successful groups to change lead singers and stay on top. Truthfully, I cannot choose between Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins; they are both amazing in my book, and Phil is a monster drummer to boot. Personally, I really believe that Peter Gabriel's vocals were at a peak at this point, and it show on this track. Kind of a comedic social commentary on greed, specifically concerning landlords, he uses the Leid format in which he plays the parts of four different characters i...

6344. Rage Against the Machine - Bullet in the Head

Image
From: Rage Against the Machine ; Year: 1992; Genre: Funk Metal/Rap Metal Perfect song to get the blood and endorphins moving to bring not only the workweek to a conclusion, but also the month. Dang, that is one killer groove from beginning to end; a perfect platform for Zach de la Rocha to belt it out over the top; amazing work.   Hear Bullet in the Head on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Santana - Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation   My song pick 2 years ago today: Weather Report - River People   My song pick 3 years ago today: Audioslave - Until We Fall   My song pick 4 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Power of the Laser Dragon Fire   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Cold Dead Reckoning (2044)   My song pick 6 years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Good Rockin' My song pick 7 years ago today: Carmen - Bullfight My song pick 8 years ago today: The Outfield - Say It Isn't So My song pick 9 years ago today: Qu...

6304. Muse - Will of the People

Image
From: Will of the People ; Year: 2022; Genre: Glam Rock/Hard Rock Here is another rousing song from Muse, which is a band that I have had on my mind for the last handful of days. 6196. The Nightwatchman - A Wall Against the Wind

Image
From: Union Town ; Year: 2011; Genre: Folk Rock Yesterday I had this one come on while driving about town; sure is a great one to sing along to in heavy traffic. I really wish Tom Morello would make more of this heavier-subject music for this project; it is very motivating and uplifting.   Hear A Wall Against the Wind on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Grateful Dead - When Push Comes to Shove   My song pick 2 years ago today: Depeche Mode - A Question of Time   My song pick 3 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Veins   My song pick 4 years ago today: Weather Report - The Moors   My song pick 5 years ago today: Stratovarius - S.O.S. 6184. Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Image
From: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised ; Year: 1973; Genre: Funk/Jazz Fusion/Rap Wanted to pick something unique and from an artist that I had not picked a song from on this Friday; and, boy did I find one! This is a rather poignant track from the late-great poet Gil Scott-Heron. It was originally released in 1971 as recited spoken word poetry accompanied by percussion, but a couple of years later was recorded with a full band.   Hear The Revolution Will Not Be Televised on YouTube. 6066. Midnight Oil - At the Time of Writing

Image
From: Resist ; Year: 2022; Genre: Alternative Rock Needed something from my favourite band out of OZ today: Midnight Oil. Figured I'd go ahead and choose another one from their most recent studio album, which definitely shows that none of the band members have not lost much if anything; very solid and immediately recognizable with that sound I've come to love over the years.   Hear At the Time of Writing on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Ginnungagap   My song pick 2 years ago today: Meat Loaf - I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bernard Wright - Firebolt Hustle   My song pick 4 years ago today: Asia - Eye to Eye   My song pick 5 years ago today: Grand Funk Railroad - We're An American Band My song pick 6 years ago today: Argent - It's Only Money (Parts 1 + 2) My song pick 7 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Woncha Take Me for a While My song pick 8 years ago...

5940. Black 47 - Fanatic Heart

Image
From: Fire of Freedom ; Year: 1993; Genre: Alternative Rock/Celtic Rock Ever since I first heard this album I loved it, even though some of the lyrics contained are somewhat extreme; just love the mournful and emotional melodies combined with the tragic stories. I don't know much about the incident mentioned in the song or when it happened, but I assume it is more biographical or someone's tribulations during one of The Twelfth celebrations. Whatever the case it's a very beautiful song with some melancholic lyrics.   Hear Fanatic Heart on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Motörhead - Hellraiser   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Charlie Daniels Band - Reflections   My song pick 3 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot   My song pick 4 years ago today: Victor Wooten - Keep it Low   My song pick 5 years ago today: Klaatu - Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft My song pick 6 years ago today: Big Cou...

5842. Megadeth - United Abominations

Image
From: United Abominations ; Year: 2007; Genre: Thrash Metal Difficult to believe that this album is now 16 years old; released just a few months prior to me starting this blog.... 5831. Midnight Oil - Last Frontier

Image
From: Resist ; Year: 2022; Genre: Alternative Rock I just love this album; they have not lost a single drop, if you will, of intensity and using their art for positive change and bringing attention to the many wrongs in their native land as well as the world. This is, (fittingly titled), the last song on more than likely wot will be the band's final record and, whilst being very familiar sounding to those like myself who love The 'Oils, there's always something in the music, be it the production, arranging, or something more basic like the chords chosen and/or rhythm, new and interesting to listen to.   Hear Last Frontier on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Stone Free   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ebony Rhythm Band - Drugs Ain't Cool   My song pick 3 years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Wallflowers - The Difference My song pick 5 years ago today: Neil...
