6758. The Cranberries - So Cold in Ireland

Image
From: No Need to Argue ; Year: 1994; Genre: Alternative Rock/Celtic Rock Kind of odd that I have not chosen a song from The Cranberries for a St. Patrick's Day pick before today; definitely need to remedy that one. They are one of the more emotionally heart wrenching bands from Ireland, mostly thanks to the amazing vocals of the late-great Dolores O'Riordan and her signature wail.    Hear So Cold in Ireland on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Flogging Molly - Crushed (Hostile Nations)     My song pick 2 years ago today: Waylander - Kindred Spirits   My song pick 3 years ago today: Black 47 - Land Of DeValera   My song pick 4 years ago today: Frank Mackey & The Keltic Cowboys - Rocky Road to Dublin   My song pick 5 years ago today: Black 47 - Bodhráns On The Brain   My song pick 6 years ago today: Waylander - The Vernal Dance   My song pick 7 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Dublin My song pick 8 years ...

6480. The Cranberries - Sunday

Image
From: Everybody Else is Doing it, so Why Can't We? ; Year: 1993; Genre: Alternative Rock For some unknown reason, or perhaps for no reason whatsoever I had The Cranberries' music on my mind this morning. So, I thought this apt song off of their first record would be an excellent choice.    Hear Sunday on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Gloryhammer - Vorpal Laserblaster Of Pittenweem     My song pick 2 years ago today: Megadeth - United Abominations   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sly & The Family Stone - I'll Never Fall In Love Again   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - The Forge of Vulcan   My song pick 5 years ago today: Asia - Ride Easy   My song pick 6 years ago today: Three Dog Night - It's a Jungle Out There My song pick 7 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Last Train My song pick 8 years ago today: Boston - Don't Be Afraid My song pick 9 years ago today: The...

6424. Black 47 - Sleep Tight In New York City / Her Dear Old Donegal

Image
From: Fire of Freedom ; Year: 1993; Genre: Celtic Rock/Alternative Rock This is a different track sonically, that is, if you are acquainted with Black 47's normal sound. It's a very moody and atmospheric song that reminds me a bit of contemporary '80s rock with a dash of Latin and blues thrown in for flavour. Kind of a heart-aching lament about a dear friend getting devoured by the big city and succumbing to the evils therein.   Hear Sleep Tight In New York City / Her Dear Old Donegal on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Dickey Betts - Highway Call   My song pick 2 years ago today: Robin Trower - Too Rolling Stoned   My song pick 3 years ago today: Skid Row - Riot Act   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Jack-A-Lynn   My song pick 5 years ago today: Madness - Our House   My song pick 6 years ago today: Chicago - Beginnings My song pick 7 years ago today: Frijid Pink - Rainbow Rider My song pick 8 years ago today:...

6389. Flogging Molly - Crushed (Hostile Nations)

Image
From: Life Is Good ; Year: 2017; Genre: Celtic Rock/Punk/Folk Rock Happy St. Patty's Day once more! Not too entirely sure in which nations it is celebrated, but I do know it is usually celebrated in nations with a lot of people with Irish ancestry and I believe it is a proper Holiday/Feast celebrated by Catholics. Anyway, as usual am picking a song that is at least somewhat apropos for the occasion. I've only chosen a single track from the band Flogging Molly before, so here is another.   Hear Crushed (Hostile Nations) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Waylander - Kindred Spirits   My song pick 2 years ago today: Black 47 - Land Of DeValera   My song pick 3 years ago today: Frank Mackey & The Keltic Cowboys - Rocky Road to Dublin   My song pick 4 years ago today: Black 47 - Bodhráns On The Brain   My song pick 5 years ago today: Waylander - The Vernal Dance   My song pick 6 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Dublin My song...

5940. Black 47 - Fanatic Heart

Image
From: Fire of Freedom ; Year: 1993; Genre: Alternative Rock/Celtic Rock Ever since I first heard this album I loved it, even though some of the lyrics contained are somewhat extreme; just love the mournful and emotional melodies combined with the tragic stories. I don't know much about the incident mentioned in the song or when it happened, but I assume it is more biographical or someone's tribulations during one of The Twelfth celebrations. Whatever the case it's a very beautiful song with some melancholic lyrics.   Hear Fanatic Heart on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Motörhead - Hellraiser   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Charlie Daniels Band - Reflections   My song pick 3 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot   My song pick 4 years ago today: Victor Wooten - Keep it Low   My song pick 5 years ago today: Klaatu - Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft My song pick 6 years ago today: Big Cou...

5752. Black 47 - Land Of DeValera

Image
From: Black 47 ; Year: 1991; Genre: Celtic Rock/Alternative Rock/Funk Rock Happy St. Patrick's Day once again! You know wot that means... yep more Celtic-inspired rock and related music. Picking another one from one of my favourite bands of that ilk: Black 47; this one comes off their self-titled debut album and from towards the end of the record. It has more of their noted Celtic rock sound with the horns in the choruses whilst the verses are more of a rap/funk style in the vocal delivery with a syncopated beat and sparse instruments.   Hear Land of DeValera on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Frank Mackey & The Keltic Cowboys - Rocky Road to Dublin   My song pick 2 years ago today: Black 47 - Bodhráns On The Brain   My song pick 3 years ago today: Waylander - The Vernal Dance   My song pick 4 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Dublin My song pick 5 years ago today: Black 47 - Paddy's Got a Brand New Reel My song pick 6 years ago tod...

5372. Frank Mackey & The Keltic Cowboys - Rocky Road to Dublin

Image
From: Song of Longing & Debauchery ; Year: 2007; Genre: Celtic Folk Rock Happy St. Patrick's Day ! As usual, I'm choosing a more or less appropriate song for my blog today. I really wish this band would've put out more music than apparently this single album, but at least it's a good one. Anyway, this track is quite folkish and more acoustically performed in the traditional style.   Hear Rocky Road to Dublin on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Black 47 - Bodhráns On The Brain   My song pick 2 years ago today: Waylander - The Vernal Dance   My song pick 3 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Dublin My song pick 4 years ago today: Black 47 - Paddy's Got a Brand New Reel My song pick 5 years ago today: Croft No Five - The Man of Arran My song pick 6 years ago today: Cruachan - The Morrigan's Call My song pick 7 years ago today: Flogging Molly - (No More) Paddy's Lament My song pick 8 years ago today: Black 47 - The Big Fella My song pic...

5346. Black 47 - Black 47

Image
From: Fire of Freedom ; Year: 1993; Genre: Alternative Rock/Celtic Rock Thought I would choose another one from Black 47, which is a band I have come to like quite a lot over the years. This is the song that is a reference to where the band derived its namesake that was the Great Hunger , (also known as The Great Potato Famine), which peaked at its worst in the year 1847. Whilst the lyrics are definitely ubiquitous in political and protest message concerning the horrific event and the struggles prior and since in the Irish nation, the music in particular is purely amazing in how it is written and arranged to aid and bring all the raw emotion to the surface of the piece.   Hear Black 47 on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Sly & The Family Stone - Dance to the Music   My song pick 2 years ago today: Primus - Prelude to a Crawl/Hennepin Crawler   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Old Aces Die Hard My song pick 4 years ago today...

5337. Frank Mackey & The Keltic Cowboys - Promise of a Better Life

Image
From: Songs of Longing & Debauchery ; Year: 2007; Genre: Folk Rock/Celtic Rock This one's a bit more mellow than the other songs I've heard from this record, but very beautiful and heavy all the same. I happened to hear this band again the other day and I thought I would look more into the band and their music. Sadly, I cannot find out much about them other than this one album, but at least all the music from it can be easily found online.    Hear Promise of a Better Life on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love   My song pick 2 years ago today: Yes - Harold Land   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Charles Mingus Quintet + Max Roach - Drums My song pick 4 years ago today: Neil Young - Sugar Mountain My song pick 5 years ago today: Return to Forever - Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant (Parts 1+2) My song pick 6 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Plant Music My song pick 7 years ago today...

Image
From: Black 47 ; Year: 1991; Genre: Celtic Rock I had Black 47's music on my mind today and I thought I'd pick another one from the band. 5006. Black 47 - Bodhráns On The Brain

Image
From: Trouble in the Land ; Year: 2000; Genre: Celtic Rock Wow, St. Patrick's Day really snuck up on me again this year; I did not have a song in mind, so I revisited one of my absolute favourite Celtic Rock bands. 4771. Black 47 - Red Hugh

Image
From: Bankers and Gangsters ; Year: 2010; Genre: Celtic Rock I've been in the 4700s for a while now and I had not chosen a Black 47 song, need to remedy that. Image
From: Last Call ; Year: 2014; Genre: Celtic Rock/Indie Rock It's kind of sad knowing that this is the last song on Black 47's final album, but this track is a good sendoff for such a great band; it really encapsulates their sound over the years. 4270. Thin Lizzy - Dublin

Image
From: Thin Lizzy (remaster version) ; Year: 1971; Genre: Celtic Rock Happy St. Paddy's Day ! As luck would have it I had Thin Lizzy on my mind this morning and knew I had my pick for today. 4172. The Pogues - Fairytale of New York

Image
From: If I Should Fall From Grace With God ; Year: 1988; Genre: Celtic Folk Rock/Christmas Music It's getting closer and closer to Christmas again... for me I normally have to work through the trepidation of relatives' chaotic moods and generalized anxiety about the Season. And thus I usually love the more introspective and may I say, maudlin music of the season. Whilst this song isn't as popular in The States as it is in Britain and Ireland, it's one that fits the feelings I often get this time of year. Hear Fairytale of New York on YouTube. Image
From: Trouble in the Land ; Year: 2000; Genre: Celtic Rock/Indie Rock This one is such a fun song in only the way Larry Kirwan and the guys in Black 47 could do. So, I just "homered out" and picked one from my favourite Celtic rock band, Black 47. Paddy's Got a Brand New Reel is a thumping and apt song from their debut album. From: Signed and Sealed in Blood ; Year: 2013; Genre: Celtic Rock/Christmas Music This year I've kind of let the Christmas season go by without picking apt songs to match.
