William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: Odessa ; Year: 1969; Genre: Progressive Rock This year just seems to be blowing right by; at least the first four months. Anyway, with this being the first day in May I knew I needed to choose something for the occasion. It was either a song with an apropos subject/title or one about Mayday, I guess gravitated towards the former this year. This aptly-titled track comes from "side four" off of their, (from wot I understand), failed concept album that, after a couple of title changes became the namesake of the lead track. From: Bee Gees' 1st ; Year: 1967; Genre: Rock/Soul I'm extremely happy that I got around to picking this song from the Brothers Gibb, aka the Bee Gees. Whilst I do like their disco era music, for me personally their earlier material has always been head and shoulders above the eras of their greater popularity and notoriety. I have always loved the Bee Gees' pre-disco period especially, but even their disco period was not bad. This morning I was wracking my brain trying to think of a good pick, but the only one that seemed to come to mind was this rather sad one from the Bee Gees. This is one of those songs that I have not heard in a while, but for some reason today I was thinking of it so I decided to pick it. I have always liked this song and I really like the vocal harmonies they use. Anyway, this was one of the Bee Gees first big hits in the U.S. and the sound is very different from what many people would think of when they think of the Bee Gees. The sound is somewhat reminiscent of the Beatles and actually from what I understand a lot people thought it was the Beatles playing on this song under a pseudonym.
