6741. Neil Sedaka - Bad Blood

Image
From: The Hungry Years ; Year: 1975; Genre: Rock  Found out that Neil Sedaka passed away yesterday. I was surprised to see that he was 86 years old; thought he was younger. I've never really been a huge fan of his more noted hits from the late 1950s through the 1960s, which consisted of sugary teenage love songs mostly. He was also a prolific songwriter, penning quite a few hits for other artists over the years as well. However, wot I remember most was his resurgence in popularity during the middle into late 1970s, which is when I was quite young and my Mom and Dad always seemed to have the radio on; his music of that time period got a lot of airplay. Anyway, I thought it would be a great idea to choose another one of his hits from that time that I remember so well. He certainly could write a killer hook, and he did a great job surrounding himself with some amazing talent in the form of Elton John's backing vocals, Steve Cropper on guitar, and Leland Sklar on bass amongst many ...

6603. Elton John - All Across the Havens

Image
From: Empty Sky (reissue); Year: 1969 (1995); Genre: Blues Rock This is one of those songs that you must replay multiple times to make sure you hear and experience every nuance, of which there are many. Whilst "pigeon-holed" as just pop/rock, this one contains jazz, blues, gospel, classical, and poetry as well in one well blended "musical soup." The music is truly something to behold, but I have to state that the emotions that Sir Elton belts into Bernie Taupin's exquisitely crafted prose is simply breathtaking. All Across the Havens is one of his songs that predates his debut album, ( Empty Sky ), and was initially released as a b-side of a single about six months earlier. It was finally included on the record on the 1995 reissue, so at least it is much easier to find and listen to now.    Hear All Across the Havens on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: 4 Non Blondes - Drifting     My song pick 2 years ago today: England Dan &...

5905. Elton John - The Bitch Is Back

From: Caribou ; Year: 1974; Genre: Hard Rock Had this track from Sir Elton John and company that apparently he says it is his "theme song." 5764. Elton John - Razor Face

Image
From: Madman Across the Water ; Year: 1971; Genre: Progressive Rock Been binging on a slew of Elton John songs recently, especially from Madman Across the Water , which had also been coming on a lot whilst driving, so it seems as if my own personal universe is trying to tell me something.... Anyway, I had not heard this song in particular for quite a great while until just recently; upon hearing it once more I immediately remembered how much I liked Razor Face , so it's my obvious pick for today.   Hear Razor Face on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Duprees - You Belong to Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: Styx - Earl of Roseland   My song pick 3 years ago today: Klaatu - A Routine Day   My song pick 4 years ago today: Motörhead - Iron Fist My song pick 5 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Stand Back My song pick 6 years ago today: Mastodon - High Road My song pick 7 years ago today: A-Ha - Love is Reason My song ...

5495. Elton John - This Song Has No Title

Image
From: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock For most of the day various songs from this monumental record has been on my mind, so, yes... another song from it! I have always really liked this double-album and often play it almost without skipping a track. I've never been too sure wot the story is about this song, but it both bemused me and gave a sense of mystery as to why he or Bernie Taupin never bestowed a title to it. I know the album was recorded in about two weeks or so, so maybe it had something to do with that. Anyway, I really like the sparse accompaniment to Elton John's piano playing and vocals, but every time they add something it's darn-near perfect for the situation. The beauty of this track in both the singing and playing makes it one of the highlights for me from the record.   Hear This Song Has No Title on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Tin Tin - Toast and Marmalade for Tea   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkade...

5306. Elton John - The Fox

Image
From: The Fox ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock I absolutely forgot which song I had in mind today, so, since I've been discussing his music with some people recently and thus have had it on my mind, I figured I couldn't go wrong with picking one from Elton John. I really like the different approaches used in The Fox ; there are aspects of gospel, country, and blues throughout this one, which gives it a very warm and inviting feeling. I also love Bernie Taupin's excellently penned and descriptive lyrics and Elton John's delivery of them; they really make the song what it is.   Hear The Fox on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Miles Davis - Blue Haze   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bootsy Collins - Hyper Space   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Cure - Lovesong My song pick 4 years ago today: Steeleye Span - The Lofty Tall Ship/Shallow Brown My song pick 5 years ago today: Powerwolf - Sanctus Dominus My song pick 6 years ago today: Simple Min...

4643. Elton John - Jamaica Jerk-Off

Image
From: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock From what I understand this song was written in response to poor treatment of the band in a Jamaican recording studio, which they found the situation unworkable and instead recorded the album at the famed Château d'Hérouville. 4274. Elton John - Crocodile Rock

Image
From: Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock/Pop I'm kind of surprised that I had not chosen this song yet. It was one of the first tracks from Elton John I ever heard as a child and I remember my dad and mom playing the old 45 rpm record whilst my siblings and I would "dance" to it. For me, listening to it with a much more mature ear what catches me the most is Dee Murray's complex bass line throughout that doesn't seem to take a break and ploughs through. 3947. Elton John - Bennie and the Jets

Image
From: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock/Glam Rock Drew a blank again today and decided to pick the last song playing in my mind. I've actually always loved Bennie and the Jets ever since I can remember. There's just something about this song that grabs the attention, probably the strangeness of its composition and arrangement; definitely a classic track. Hear Bennie and the Jets on YouTube. 3402. Elton John - Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

Image
From: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock Still have this great album on my mind today, so I'm picking another from of it. This medley is probably my favourite of all of Elton John's work. It wisely/skillfully fuses one of his most progressive and symphonic pieces with a straight-ahead rocker, which made it not only have a wide appeal, but got it played on the radio to boot. Hear Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding on YouTube. 3401. Elton John - Saturday's Alright for Fighting

Image
From: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ; Year: 1973; Genre: Hard Rock I thought I'd already chosen this track at some point in the past, so I thought I would go ahead and fix it. One of Elton John's harder rockers is certain to make you get up and move. Hear Saturday's Alright for Fighting on YouTube. 2275 Elton John - Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)

Image
From: Honky Château ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock I had some of Elton John's music on my mind and thought I would pick one of his songs. I've always loved this song; I was actually surprised that I hadn't already picked it, but apparently not. The way that John and Taupin wrote this space epic as if the Rocket Man was a long-haul trucker was a stroke of genius; essentially turning something exciting like space exploration into something akin to the daily drudgery of work that everyone can relate to. Of course the lyrics are one-half of the equation, the masterful way Elton John mixes major and minor chords brings the sense of longing in the verse and then swells in the pre-chorus to all the way to the sky in the chorus is just as genius as the lyrics; they compliment each other perfectly. Hear Rocket Man on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Béla Bartók - BB 52 - String Quartet No. 1 in A minor My song pick two years ago today: Victor Wooten - Us 2 My ...

1365 Elton John - Lady Samantha

Image
1365 Elton John - Lady Samantha From: Empty Sky (Reissue), Year: 1969, (1995) I originally heard the Three Dog Night cover version of this song when I bought a greatest hits collection of their music quite a while ago it became one of my favourite tracks on the album. When looking through the album's liner notes I found out this was another song from the songwriting team of John/Taupin. Of course I immediately had to hear the original Elton John version and it became a favourite as well. I really like both versions; they are quite similar and I could have just as easily picked the Three Dog Night version; I probably will at a later date. Anyway, I love Bernie Taupin's lyrics and subject matter in this song; it's almost like it's written about a spectre or something similar; the wailing guitar adds a lot to the atmosphere. Hear Lady Samantha on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Nena - 99 Luftballons My song pick two years ago today: Rainbow -...

657 ( Elton John - Tiny Dancer )

Image
While on the road today my cassette to mp3 player adapter broke and I was forced to listen to the local radio; it was not as bad as it would seem, however. This song popped on the radio when we were close to home and just seemed to be a good choice for tonight. This is one of my favorite Elton John/Bernie Taupin compositions; the lyrics and the music meld perfectly to make an incredible, beautiful song. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is a classic performance on YouTube. +

Song 529 ( Elton John - All the Girls Love Alice )

Image
I have never really been a true Elton John aficionado, however there is a great deal of his music that I like a lot. What I've always liked about his songs is that there is a lot to listen to that is backing his piano and vocals; on this song especially the drums and bass are incredible. The chorus is the best, most interesting part of this one in my opinion. Underneath the upbeat feel that he and the band create is quite a sad song, there are very few artist out there that could pull off subject matter like this and make a hit out of it. Here is the studio version on YouTube. +

Song 290 (Elton John--"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road")

Image
I am having a busy and productive Saturday and I need to make a quick pick. I heard this song the other day on the radio and it was a potential pick in the back of my mind. Also, yesterday I saw a programme on the television about the making of this album which also cemented the pick, so I figured that now is a good time to choose this song from the excellent writing talents of John/Taupin. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is a Top of the Pops performance on YouTube. Here is a live performance circa '76 on YouTube. +

Song 220 (Elton John--"Philadelphia Freedom")

This is one of those songs that when they come up on my playlist I have to turn it up. It's very much a thumping, and danceable rock song that I really like. The song is arranged quite well and Elton John’s vocals round it out excellently. Here is a recording of the song on YouTube. Here is a live performance on YouTube. +
