6726. Bob Dylan - Thunder on the Mountain

Image
From: Modern Times ; Year: 2006; Genre: Rock 'n Roll/Rockabilly I wanted to pick something related to Valentine's Day, and this track in fact does have a major connection to the holiday, so bear with me. Okay, so, in the past I really wasn't one that cared for Valentine's Day; just seemed too commercial and felt like one of those occasions where society seemingly punishes the lonely people who hadn't a "sweetheart." Make them feel like outcasts and unloved, etc. Well, a few years ago I discovered that this holiday on which the martyrdom of  Saint Valentine  is marked, happened on the Roman festival of Lupercalia , which contained some rites of fertility and such. Of course the Feast of St. Valentine has been observed for many, many centuries since. However, I happened to discover the genesis of wot you could call the more secular aspects, which began with Geoffrey Chaucer , who is known as both the Father of English Literature and Poetry, in his 14th Centu...

5535. Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street

Image
From: Positively 4th Street (single) ; Year: 1965; Genre: Folk Rock Bob Dylan is one who's music been off and on my mind for about the last week or so. It still amazes me just how many hit singles he wrote and performed over the years; he's essentially a one-man music factory. Anyway, I was once again surprised that I had not chosen this track as of yet, so I'll take this opportunity to remedy that. For me the music and the poetry intertwine to boost each other and make for an amazing exhibition of a personal reflection from a situation he was quite passionate about.   Hear Positively 4th Street on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Robin Trower - Same Rain Falls   My song pick 2 years ago today: Classics IV - Spooky   My song pick 3 years ago today: Black Sabbath - E5150 My song pick 4 years ago today: Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay My song pick 5 years ago today: ZZ Top - I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide My song pick 6 years ago today: Spooky Tooth - ...

5020. Bob Dylan - It Ain't Me Babe

Image
From: Another Side of Bob Dylan ; Year: 1964; Genre: Folk I recollect the cover of this song by The Turtles, others might remember another cover by someone else, or even perhaps the original; as with a many song from that era it came from the pen of Bob Dylan. This one has a very pronounced folk sound to it, bare bones, but quite heavy at the same time.   Hear It Ain't Me Babe on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Of Monsters and Men - Alligator   My song pick 2 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Beat 'Em Up My song pick 3 years ago today: ZZ Top - Cheap Sunglasses My song pick 4 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Time Is On Your Side My song pick 5 years ago today: Exile - Please Be There My song pick 6 years ago today: Hank Williams - Hey Good Lookin' My song pick 7 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Speak My song pick 8 years ago today: The Beach Boys - God Only Knows My song pick 9 years ago today: Hawkwind - Living on ...

4488. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower

Image
From: John Wesley Harding ; Year: 1967; Genre: Folk Rock Bob Dylan has been on my mind today and I thought I'd pick another of his tracks. This song is of course, the original version that he penned that was made extremely famous by the late-great Jimi Hendrix whose version is legendary . Just another one of many songs that Bob Dylan wrote that are mind blowing when you listen to the music and lyrics. Hear All Along the Watchtower on YouTube. 4065. Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay

Image
From: Nashville Skyline ; Year: 1969; Genre: Folk Rock I might bring down the hammer on myself for saying this, but vocally this is one of my favourite Dylan song; I just love that lower, more controlled delivery. Anyway, besides the vocals this is a truly beautiful song all the way around. That pedal steel guitar, the vocals, the bass, the drums, etc... all are more or less perfect for the song. 3881. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall

Image
From: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan ; Year: 1963; Genre: Folk/Blues Seemed like a perfect day for some Bob Dylan; his Freewheelin' album is and will probably always be one of my absolute favourite albums of his. Whilst this another protest song from the early '60s, it's amazing how the message is written like it was for today; so relevant and so deep. Hear A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall on YouTube. Image
From: New Morning ; Year: 1970; Genre: Folk Rock Dang, it's next to impossible finding a version of Bob Dylan's original online at the moment, but I still want to pick it anyway. Image
From: Freewheelin' Bob Dylan ; Year: 1963; Genre: Folk Last night after hearing this song in a movie I've had this early and rather powerful Bob Dylan track on my mind. 3107. Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues

Image
From: Bringing It All Back Home ; Year: 1965; Genre: Folk Rock/Blues Rock The last few weeks I've had music from mid 60s Bob Dylan come on my playlist as well, so I thought I'd finally get a clue a pick a song from that era. 2317 Bob Dylan - Forever Young

Image
From: Planet Waves ; Year: 1974; Genre: Folk Rock I had absolutely no song in mind for today, but eventually thought picking a Bob Dylan track would be good. While it does not bare a great deal of similarities, this song was modified and covered by Rod Stewart, ( which can be found here on YouTube ), but the sentiment and overall message in the song remained unchanged. Watch a live performance from The David Letterman show circa 1973 on YouTube. 1962 Bob Dylan - See That My Grave is Kept Clean

Image
From: Bob Dylan ; Year: 1962; Genre: Folk Bob Dylan's eponymous debut album came out in 1962, (also today's song pick number); I figured it would be an excellent choice to pick something from it. See that My Grave is Kept Clean was among the cover songs he recorded, it was originally written by "Blind" Lemon Jefferson . Hear Bob Dylan's version of See That My Grave is Kept Clean on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio - I Am Santa Claus My song pick two years ago today: Daft Punk - End of Line My song pick three years ago today: Avatar (Savatage) - Rock Me My song pick four years ago today: Savatage - White Witch My song pick five years ago today: Paul McCartney - Little Willow

1800 Bob Dylan - Hurricane

Image
From: Desire ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Folk Rock Yesterday I was listening to a bunch of Bob Dylan's music and I replayed this song in particular quite a few times. Like quite a few songs in his catalogue, this is a protest song. It was written about an incident of injustice where a man named Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was railroaded in a racial manner for a tripple murder he didn't commit. It was written and released about 10 years after the fact and even though Mr. Rubin Carter did get a retrial about a year or so after the song, it wasn't until another 10 years after that he finally got his freedom. The saddest part about that story was the fact that he lost about 20 years of his life and a promising career as a prize fighter to boot as a result. Throughout the entire song you can hear not just anger, but rage in every aspect of it. The hurried and driving feeling given by the bass and drums almost gives you the feeling of a loss of control, which I belie...

1577 Bob Dylan - Knockin' on Heaven's Door

Image
1577 Bob Dylan - Knockin' on Heaven's Door From: Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (Soundtrack), Year: 1973 Genre: Folk Rock Last night some of my family and I were having a jam session and this was one that we played; I can't believe that I haven't yet picked it. This one was originally written for the soundtrack for the film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid ; this song was, if memory serves, the only hit to come out of the project. This is one of many songs from Bob Dylan that I absolutely love, it is such an emotional piece of music. The simplicity of this track musically, in my opinion, only reinforces those emotional aspects. Even though Bob Dylan is not known for his vocal prowess, his vocals were perfect for this song. Hear Knockin' on Heaven's Door on YouTube. Here is a live performance circa '95 on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Frank Zappa - Dumb All Over My song pick two years ago today: Django Reinhardt - I'll See Y...

875 ( Traveling Wilburys - End of the Line )

Image
875 ( Traveling Wilburys - End of the Line ) I was thinking about this song most of the morning, so I am adding to my list. It rolls along quite nicely with the nicely defined "locomotive" rhythm. It is a nice unobtrusive song to wake up and clear your mind to. Here is the music video on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Doors - Love Her Madly My song pick two years ago today: Rod Stewart - Young Turks (Young Hearts Be Free) +

802 ( Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue )

Image
802 ( Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue ) It's late or early again, which ever way you look at it, so I guess that I will add today's pick to my list. I actually a while ago had this song in mind for a pick, but for some reason I never chose it. However, this morning whilst on the road this song was brought back to my attention when came on the radio; I immediately knew I had my next pick. This song epitomizes what I like about Bob Dylan and his music: wonderful imagery and storytelling. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is a live performance of the song on YouTube. There are quite a few other versions and live performances on YouTube a well. My song pick a year ago today: #430 Supertramp - Take the Long Way Home My song pick two years ago today: #62 Béla Fleck and the Flecktones - Vix 9 +

Song 494 ( Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone )

Image
I had no reason to choose this song other than I like it. It's nice to see a band of musicians come together to make a song as great as this one; I especially love Al Kooper's contribution on the organ in this song. I have always loved the deep and introspective lyrics that come from Dylan's pen. From what I understand this one was originally a book that he wrote and later made it into a song. Hear Like a Rolling Stone on YouTube. +
