2804 Hank Williams - Hey Good Lookin'

Image
From: 40 Greatest Hits ; Year: 1988 (1951); Genre: Rockabilly/Country Ever since watching a show about steel guitarist Don Helms, who famously played on this song, I've had it on my mind off and on. I have to say, it's a rather cute song from Mr. Hank Williams' pen, which is laced with some rather racy double entendres, and the steel guitar really gives it that hook that put it over the top and helped to give it the timeless and legendary status the song has. Hear Hey Good Lookin' on YouTube. 2803 Egg - I Will Be Absorbed

Image
From: Egg ; Year: 1970; Genre: Progressive Rock I was intending on picking another song today, but it just didn't feel like a good fit, so I picked one that I've been meaning to for a while now that fit better. This is an interesting piece of earlier prog rock; not as bombastic, but still quite nice. Hear I Will Be Absorbed on YouTube. 2802 Bob Seger - Turn the Page

Image
From: Back In '72 ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock For no real reason, other than the fact that I love his music, I felt like picking something from Bob Seger this morning, so I thought I would go ahead and do so. This is one of his most recognizable songs out there, but it really didn't get the notoriety until the '76 live release from Live Bullet , so many probably have never heard the original. Personally I think with the subject matter and the story, the live atmosphere sells the song a lot better and thus resonates with the listener more. Hear the original studio version on YouTube. Image
From: Yeah! ; Year: 2006; Genre: Glam Rock I had this cover of the classic David Essex tune running through my mind this morning and as usual I decided I should choose it. From: Dust Yourself Off ; Year: 1975; Genre: Funk/Soul Time for another "odometer rollover" with my 2800th song picked and a continued streak of Funky Friday picks to boot. 2799 Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away

Image
From: 5 ; Year: 1998; Genre: Funk Rock/Hard Rock For some reason I had a bunch of Lenny Kravitz's songs on my mind this morning, and as per usual I took it as a sign it was time another one of his tracks. Anyway, this was and still one of his bigger hits; back when it was released it was extremely big and you couldn't go a few days without hearing it. There is somewhat of a timeless quality about this song; it fits in with the music of a lot of other time periods in rock. Hear Fly Away on YouTube. 2798 Beat Crusaders - Slip Out

Image
From: Animation Beck Soundtrack ; Year: 2005; Genre: Alternative Rock Today I really didn't have a song in mind to pick; I could've forced a pick into today, but I didn't want to. So, I decided to let my iPod choose one for me and a Beat Crusaders' track was the response, and it actually fit my mood for some reason, so it's my pick. This was one that they recorded for the Beck: The Mongolian Chop Squad animé soundtrack and I'm unaware if it appeared on one of their proper albums. Anyway, this is among my favoured from the soundtrack; it's a real melodic and smooth track with a nice groove. Hear Slip Out on YouTube. 2797 Kansas - Dust in the Wind

Image
From: Point of Know Return ; Year: 1977; Genre: Progressive Rock Yesterday I was watching a documentary on the band Kansas and I've had their music on the brain ever since. This one is probably to this day their biggest hit that is almost instantly recognizable to almost anybody, no matter what a person's personal musical preferences. This song is one that has it all in perfect portions; it's musically technical, but also catchy; it's big, but also unobtrusive; and the lyrics are deep, poetic, and philosophical, but almost all people that listen to it find something to they can identify with. Hear Dust in the Wind on YouTube. 2794 Mr. Big - Mr. Never in a Million Years

Image
From: Get Over It ; Year: 2000; Genre: Hard Rock/Blues Rock I just felt like hearing something from Mr. Big today; I thought I would pick something off of one of their albums that I normally don't much listen to. This one has a bit of a disjointed feeling in the verses, but smooths out in the chorus; a good song with excellent musicianship throughout. Hear Mr. Never in a Million Years on YouTube. 2793 Bootsy's Rubber Band - Stretchin' Out (In a Rubber Band)

Image
From: Stretchin' Out in Bootsy's Rubber Band ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk Today is my 80th consecutive Funky Friday and I thought I would mark the pick with some proper, thumping and bumping fun funk from the funky monster himself and his band. Image
From: Climbing! ; Year: 1970; Genre: Hard Rock I had this great thumping hard rock/early metal track on my mind last night; I was kind of surprised that I had yet to pick it, so I am now. 2791 Toto - Stranger in Town

Image
From: Isolation ; Year: 1984; Genre: Rock/New Wave I meant to pick this song for a couple of days now due to a variety of reasons, but I am doing so now. As some may know, or may not, former Toto bassist Mike Porcaro passed away a few days ago after a long struggle with ALS . Early on in my learning to play the bass both he and his predecessor, David Hungate, were quite influential on my initial playing style and sound. So, this seems like an apropos pick for today for certain. Anyway, this track is very reminiscent of the time period it was released, which definitely gives it a slightly quality, but a great song none-the-less. Hear Stranger in Town on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Dream Theater - Hell's Kitchen My song pick two years ago today: Styx - Come Sail Away My song pick three years ago today: Alestorm - You Are a Pirate My song pick four years ago today: Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debbie My song pick five years ago today: The Box Tops - The

2790 Flogging Molly - (No More) Paddy's Lament

Image
From: Float ; Year: 2009; Genre: Celtic Rock It's another St. Patrick's Day and thought I would pick another apropos track for the the occasion. I was thinking the other day that with bands like Flogging Molly, The Dropkick Murphys, and even Black 47 that it must be heck for those great acts to only get their main attention around this time of the year. I mean, I listen to them all year around and love their music, but I often wonder how many others do. Anyway, this is one of the main songs I like off of my favourite of their albums, and it just felt like a great pick for today. Hear (No More) Paddy's Lament on YouTube. Image
From: Big Towne, 2061 , Year: 1976; Genre: Rock Going random today with my pick and came up with this rather hard and funky track from Bob Welch's short-lived but ever so bright power trio Paris. 2783 Pink Floyd - Money

Image
From: Dark Side of the Moon ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock I was intending on picking another song from another band, but I just wasn't feeling it, so I sat back and let my mind go. Music from Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon came into mind; while I've picked a few from the album, oddly enough Money is not among them. 2782 Carmen - She Flew Across the Room

Image
From: Dancing on a Cold Wind ; Year: 1974; Genre: Hard Rock/Flamenco Rock/Progressive Rock I had some other couple songs in mind to pick today, but I got sidetracked when I started to think about some of the music from the Anglo-American flamenco/rock band Carmen. 2777 James Blunt - So Long, Jimmy

Image
From: Back To Bedlam ; Year: 2004; Genre: Rock/Pop I have yet to pick one from the Brit pop star James Blunt, and after I happened to see a few interviews from hit I thought I would check out some of his work. As with most stars primarily in the pop genre I normally go through their albums and listen to his/her longest track, which is normally the one that I end up liking the most. It worked again apparently, because this one ended up being my favourite off his debut album; and excellent track in my opinion. Hear So Long, Jimmy on YouTube.
