6885. Johnny Taylor - Who's Making Love

Image
From: Who's Making Love... ; Year: 1968; Genre: Soul In my spare time over the last week I've been watching a documentary series about the soul hit factory that was Stax Records out of Memphis, Tennessee. I have to say that it is very enlightening to hear about the inner workings of Stax from the people who were there, wrote and made music, as well as the other people who ran it. I've always absolutely loved the music that came out of there, so it is not surprising that I thoroughly enjoy it. Anyway, this is one of the songs that was featured and one that I've always liked. I never knew that Johnny Taylor's Who's Making Love was kind of rebirth of the label after the tragic death of Otis Redding and members of his touring band the Bar-Kays, the loss of their back catalogue to Atlantic Records, as well as the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and all the Civil Rights Movement of which Memphis was one of the major battlefields of it. 6683. Isaac Hayes - Theme From The Men

Image
From: The Very Best of Isaac Hayes ; Year: 2007 (1972); Genre: Soul/Funk I don't know why, but just wanted to pick something from Isaac Hayes for today, which is the first Funky Friday of the New Year! Isaac Hayes was a noted composer of not just regular music, but was quite prolific in the writing of television/film music; most famous would be the Theme From Shaft . This one came from an umbrella/wheel series that lasted a single season, of course, titled:  The Men . The series consisted of three drama/adventure shows on a similar theme and would weekly rotate. Whilst the show(s) did not fair well, Isaac Hayes' theme did become a hit for him and has been recorded by other artists in different genres since.   Hear Theme From The Men on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Carmen - The City     My song pick 2 years ago today: Jerry Goldsmith and Paul Williams - Flying Dreams   My song pick 3 years ago today: Pointer Sisters - Ju...

5551. Isaac Hayes - Theme From Shaft

From: Shaft ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Soul I don't know why it's taken me so long to choose this classic track for my blog, but when thinking about today's Funky Friday pick it just happened to pop into my mind. Probably most people who've been around since the film came out have hear this song at some point, or at least know of it. The Theme, and the rest of the soundtrack for that matter, were a pure work of mastery and is timeless; it will undoubtedly be so centuries to come.   Hear Theme From Shaft on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Who - 5.15   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Delfonics - Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide From Love) My song pick 3 years ago today: Foghat - Fool for the City My song pick 4 years ago today: Asia - Daylight My song pick 5 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Lowlands of Holland My song pick 6 years ago today: Mr. Bungle - Squeeze Me Macaroni My song pick 7 years ago today: The Delfonics -...
