3080. Primus with The Fungi Ensemble - Farewell Wonkites

Image
From: Primus & The Chocolate Factory ; Year: 2014; Genre: Psychedelic Metal Dang, it's my final pick of the year, and I'm in mood for some Primus today, so I went for this one that closes out their cover of the soundtrack to the classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory . Essentially this is the reprise for the entire album/soundtrack, but in a very interesting and Pink Floydish Psychedelic manner. Anyway, catch y'all tomorrow for the start of another year of song picks; Happy New Year! Hear Farewell Wonkites on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin/Late Lament My song pick two years ago today: Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Old Rugged Cross My song pick three years ago today: Mahavishnu Orchestra - One Word My song pick four years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - The Raven My song pick five years ago today: Béla Fleck and the Flecktones - The Sinister Minister My song pick six years ago today: Rammste

3079. Motörhead - Ace of Spades

Image
From: Ace of Spades ; Year: 1980; Genre: Metal/Hard Rock As probably most people already know, Lemmy, (Ian Kilmister), passed away earlier this week from a bout of cancer. I figured I should pick an appropriate song; when I discovered that I hadn't yet picked this song, which is one of their most famous, I knew I had my song for today. Rest in Peace. Hear Ace of Spades on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Yes - Looking Around My song pick two years ago today: Alestorm - Over the Seas My song pick three years ago today: Paul Simon - Mother and Child Reunion My song pick four years ago today: Maurice Ravel - M.81 - Boléro My song pick five years ago today: Megaherz - Schizophren My song pick six years ago today: Genesis - Turn It On Again My song pick seven years ago today: Miles Davis - Walkin' My song pick eight years ago today: Jethro Tull - Cold Wind To Valhalla

3078. Rush - Best I Can

Image
From: Fly By Night ; Year: 1974; Genre: Hard Rock Felt like listening to some early Rush this morning; this track definitely has that raw, straight-up harder edge you only hear on their very early material. Hear Best I Can on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Waylon Jennings - I'm a Ramblin' Man My song pick two years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade My song pick three years ago today: Gentle Giant - The House, The Street, The Room My song pick four years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Something to Believe In My song pick five years ago today: Dizzy Gillespie - One Note Samba My song pick six years ago today: Steely Dan - Josie My song pick seven years ago today: Joni Mitchell - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat My song pick eight years ago today: Big Country - In A Big Country

3077. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

Image
From: Glorified Magnified ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock I was going through some old files on my computer concerning my Song a Day Blog, which I've been doing now for over 8 years, and found my old "queue" of potential picks that I used to turn to when I got stuck. I happened to find that one of the oldest ones on the list was a song from Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Anyway, after checking it out I discovered that, one of the bands I really like, Manfred Mann, hadn't graced my list in almost 2900 picks and the Earth Band even longer, so I definitely had to pick one. I love what they did with this song originally penned and recorded by Bob Dylan and covered many of times; it's got the original feel, but with a harder rock edge. Hear It's All Over Now, Baby Blue on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Brave Belt - Too Far Away My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Protect and Survive My song pick three years ago today: The Flying Bur

3076. Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

Image
From: Moanin' the Blues ; Year: 1952 (1949); Genre: Country/Blues I had this rather mournful and pretty song from the legend that was Hank Williams Sr for most of the morning and figured I should pick it. Hank Williams' vocals and their honest delivery are without a doubt the best part of this song, but that steel by the great Jerry Byrd is right up there with it. Hear I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Pat Benatar - Hell is for Children My song pick two years ago today: The Headhunters feat. The Pointer Sisters - God Make Me Funky My song pick three years ago today: Yes - Beyond & Before My song pick four years ago today: Billy Joel - The Downeaster 'Alexa' My song pick five years ago today: Oasis - Cast No Shadow My song pick six years ago today: Nightwish - Wanderlust My song pick seven years ago today: Dizzy Gillespie - Salt Peanuts My song pick eight years ago today: Bon Jovi - You Give Love A Ba

3075. The Fifth Dimension - Up, Up and Away

Image
From: Up, Up and Away ; Year: 1967; Genre: Sunshine Pop/Psychedelic Rock Off and on over the last few weeks I've had this song on my mind; I do not know why, other than it's catchy I guess. Anyway, this is another one of the bands that I have not picked a song from in an age and a half, so I am. Not a bad song, but it's definitely saccharine sweet. Hear Up, Up and Away on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Parliament - Rumpofsteelskin My song pick two years ago today: Mr. Big - Shine My song pick three years ago today: Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues My song pick four years ago today: Genesis - Land of Confusion My song pick five years ago today: Jethro Tull - Stuck in the August Rain My song pick six years ago today: Rammstein - Feuer Frei! 3072. Louis Armstrong - Winter Wonderland

Image
From: What a Wonderful Christmas ; Year: 1997, (1952); Genre: Jazz/Christmas Music Nothing gets me in a good mood for the Christmas Season than hearing Pops play some great Holiday music. This is a great jazz rendition of the Christmas classic in that unique Satchmo style. Hear Winter Wonderland on YouTube. Image

3070. Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio - Jingle Hells Bells

Image
From: I Am Santa Claus ; Year: 1993; Genre: Hard Rock/Christmas Music/Comedy/Parody Continuing on picking some Christmas tunes, I thought picking some light-hearted comedy would be a wonderful idea; definitely good for the stress that we normally have this time of year. Anyway, as you could probably surmise by the title this is an AC/DC parody of a few of their most popular songs set to lyrics based on the classic song " My Favourite Things ," but with a more "metal" oriented list of things. A very fun song and definitely one of the better ones from Bob Rivers. Hear Jingle Hells Bells on YouTube. 3069. Jethro Tull - Holly Herald

Image
From: The Jethro Tull Christmas Album ; Year: 2003; Genre: Christmas Music/Progressive Rock/classical Being that this is the week of Christmas I figured I should pick some music for the season. This instrumental blends a lot of similar and contrasting styles in a medley Christmas song along with some original material as well. It's a great mover that gets the blood moving for the Holidays. Hear Holly Herald on YouTube. 3068. Stuart Hamm - Terminal Beach

Image
From: Kings of Sleep ; Year: 1989; Genre: Rock Last night was very busy and it still has me lagging this morning. I thought of a few songs to pick and I kept coming back to Stu Hamm, so I'm choosing this rather melodic piece of his Kings of Sleep album, which is one of my favourites of his. Hear Terminal Beach on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: James Brown - Santa Claus, Go Straight to the Ghetto My song pick two years ago today: The Police - So Lonely My song pick three years ago today: Ben E. King - Stand By Me My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow My song pick five years ago today: Nightwish - Wishmaster My song pick six years ago today: The Violent Femmes - Color Me Once My song pick seven years ago today: The Who - Eminence Front My song pick eight years ago today: John Fogerty - Almost Saturday Night

3067. Bootsy's Rubber Band - Psychoticbumpschool

Image
From: Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band ; Year: 1976; Genre; Funk A huge smile came on my face the other day when this song came on; put me in an incredible mood. 3066. Tarja Turunen - Never Enough

Image
From: Colours in the Dark ; Year: 2013; Genre: Symphonic Metal/Power Metal This is a great song and album if you like hearing classical and operatic styles mixed with hard rock/metal music. 3065. The United States of America - Stranded in Time

Image
From: The United States of America ; Year: 1967; Genre: Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Rock I noticed yet another band that I've only picked one song from, and that was quite a while ago; I really should just make a theme out of this if I keep doing it. In this shorter track you can hear a great deal of Beatles influence, especially from the vocal harmonies and string arrangements. But the song is still quite unique, especially after the second section kicks in. Hear Stranded in Time on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Boston - Can'tcha Say (Believe in Me)/Still in Love My song pick two years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Dreams I'll Never See My song pick three years ago today: Miles Davis - Straight, No Chaser My song pick four years ago today: Triumph - Hold On My song pick five years ago today: Jack Black and Jason Segel - The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth My song pick six years ago today: John Denver - Poems, Prayers and Promises My son

3064. Jackson Browne - Running on Empty

Image
From: Running on Empty ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock For some reason this morning I had this song on my mind and thought I would pick it. I'm actually not only surprised that I have not picked this track, but that it's been well over 2500 posts ago since I chose one of his songs. Anyway, this is one of the more recognizable songs from Jackson Browne; it's been heard quite a bit on not only the radio, but from a lot of different media. It's been one I've always loved. Hear Running on Empty on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Porcupine Tree - This Long Silence My song pick two years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Stone of Love My song pick three years ago today: The Crickets (Buddy Holley) - That'll Be the Day My song pick four years ago today: Alestorm - Keelhauled My song pick five years ago today: Jethro Tull - My God My song pick six years ago today: Wolfsheim - Once in a Lifetime My song pick seven years ago today: Grand Funk Rai

3063. Cybotron - Implosion

Image
From: Implosion ; Year: 1980; Genre: Electronic Rock/Progressive Rock I caught some of their music the other day and today I'm definitely in the mood for more of their music and make another pick of one of their tracks. Strangely for Cybotron, this one is actually quite melodic, which works well with their normal big, electronic sound. Hear Implosion on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Godzilla My song pick two years ago today: Tangerine Dream - White Eagle My song pick three years ago today: Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel My song pick four years ago today: Rare Earth - I Just Want to Celebrate My song pick five years ago today: Top Gear Band - Red Light Spells Danger My song pick six years ago today: Azteca - Love is a Stranger My song pick seven years ago today: Danzig - Mother My song pick eight years ago today: Savatage - Gutter Ballet

3062. The Offspring - The Meaning of Life

Image
From: Ixnay on the Hombre ; Year: 1997; Genre: Punk/Rock It's another busy weekend, so I'm making a quick pick. No band better than the "balls to the wall" sound of The Offspring to get the blood moving and hit the ground running. I just love this album; it has to be my favourite from the band, and the song is great as well. Hear The Meaning of Life on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Savatage - Degrees of Sanity My song pick two years ago today: Extreme - Get the Funk Out My song pick three years ago today: Bill Haley & His Comets - Rock Around the Clock My song pick four years ago today: Steve Vai - I'm the Hell Outta Here My song pick five years ago today: Fear Factory - Replica My song pick six years ago today: David Bowie - Changes My song pick seven years ago today: Heart - Black On Black II My song pick eight years ago today: Fontella Bass - Rescue Me

3061. Devo - Beautiful World

Image
From: New Traditionalists ; Year: 1981; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop/Rock I haven't picked a song from Devo for many moons so it seems... I must fix that; they are a band I like too much to ignore for so long. You gotta love the masterfully written and sung tongue-in-cheek lyrics mixed with the great, complex music; one of their best for a reason. Hear Beautiful World on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - E-Man Boogie My song pick two years ago today: Yes - The Man You Always Wanted Me to Be My song pick three years ago today: Soundgarden - Non-State Actor My song pick four years ago today: The Mushroom Tabernacle Choir - 12 Drugs of Christmas My song pick five years ago today: David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes My song pick six years ago today: Ian Anderson - In the Moneylender's Temple My song pick seven years ago today: Dobie Grey - Drift Away My song pick eight years ago today: Lobo - Gypsy and the Midnight Ghost

All Right My song pick eight years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Dreams

3059. Van Der Graaf Generator - Still Life

Image
From: Still Life ; Year: 1976; Genre: Progressive Rock For really no reason whatsoever I felt like listening to something from this heavier prog-rock band. This song, the title track from their '76 Still Life album, has for almost the first three minutes essentially light singing of heavier lyrics accompanied by a Hammond Organ. The entire band then really kicks in hard in grand fashion; and I love the way they arranged it; how it ebbs and swells. Hear Still Life on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Stryper - To Hell with the Devil My song pick two years ago today: The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up My song pick three years ago today: Alestorm - Leviathan My song pick four years ago today: Rush - What You're Doing My song pick five years ago today: Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Bright Moments My song pick six years ago today: Maddy Prior - The Fabled Hare My song pick seven years ago today: Chuck Berry - Almost Grown My song pick eight years ago today:

3058. Vangelis - Chariots of Fire - Titles

Image
From: Chariots of Fire (Original Score) ; Year: 1981; Genre: Classical/Soundtrack About anybody who's been alive for the last 30 years has probably heard this song, and it's one that often just under the surface of my mind just waiting to bob its head up and "earworm" me, like today. The opening Titles from Chariots of Fire is one of those film scores that actually eclipsed the film it was made for. I love the mix of piano and traditional musical instruments with full-blown synth; definitely a song for the ages. Hear Chariots of Fire - Titles on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Chet Atkins - Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) My song pick two years ago today: Bob Dylan - Forever Young My song pick three years ago today: Les Paul & Mary Ford - How High the Moon My song pick four years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Rain is Falling My song pick five years ago today: Rush - Red Lenses My song pick six years ago today: The Ki

3057. Queen - Thank God It's Christmas

Image
From: The Edge of Christmas ; Year: 1995 (1984); Genre: Rock/Christmas Music I've been needing to get into a Christmas mood lately and I was also in the mood for some Queen, so I thought: why not do both? This mid 1980s Holiday single also came on the compilation album The Edge of Christmas about a decade later; a nice piece of feelgood music for The Season. Hear Thank God It's Christmas on YouTube . My song pick one year ago today: Faster Pussycat - House of Pain My song pick two years ago today: Dire Straits - Skateaway My song pick three years ago today: Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie - Bloomdido My song pick four years ago today: Molly Hatchet - One Man's Pleasure My song pick five years ago today: Hawkwind - High Rise My song pick six years ago today: Joachim Witt - Bataillon 'd Amour My song pick seven years ago today: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Ohio My song pick eight years ago today: Donovan - Sunshine Superman

3056. Candlebox - Change

Image
From: Candlebox ; Year: 1993; Genre: Alternative Rock It's strange for me to think of 1990's music in a nostalgic, but it's become that way Hard to believe that it's been 20 years now since music like this came out; seems like a couple of years ago to me. Anyway, this track has aged pretty well; much better than many others from the time. Hear Change on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Pallas - Atlantis My song pick two years ago today: The Beatles - Blackbird My song pick three years ago today: Vaughn Monroe - (Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend My song pick four years ago today: Bob Dylan - Knockin' on Heaven's Door My song pick five years ago today: Frank Zappa - Dumb All Over My song pick six years ago today: Django Reinhardt - I'll See You In My Dreams My song pick seven years ago today: Queen - You're My Best Friend My song pick eight years ago today: The Zombies - She's Not There

3055. Allan Sherman - I See Bones

Image
From: My Son, The Nut ; Year: 1963; Genre: Jazz/Comedy/Parody Lately they've been playing a commercial on television with the song C'est si bon playing behind it; it's been getting to me enough that I've had it on my mind a lot and thus this rather unique parody but the late master of parody music: Allan Sherman. This is a cute one where instead of the traditional lyrics this one has comedic lyrics about a French doctor listing off a bunch both weird and normal objects seen on an X-Ray. Interestingly enough, the album this song appears on, My Son, The Nut , was the last comedy album to reach #1 on the charts until Weird Al did it last year with his album Mandatory Fun . Hear I See Bones on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Rush - Chemistry My song pick two years ago today: Rick James - Super Freak My song pick three years ago today: The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Three to Get Ready My song pick four years ago today: Rammstein - Rammstein My s

3054. Stone Temple Pilots - Big Bang Baby

Image
From: Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop ; Year: 1996; Genre: Alternative Rock The other day I learned that former singer for Stone Temple Pilots, Scott Weiland passed away at the age of 48 years old; I thought it would be appropriate to pick one of their songs featuring him. This is a great track from the late "Grunge" era, also known as "Post Grunge" I guess and has a great rhythm section and shows off Scott Weiland's vocals too. Hear Big Bang Baby on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Maktub - Motherfucker My song pick two years ago today: Saga - It's Time (Chapter Three) My song pick three years ago today: Rush - Red Sector A My song pick four years ago today: Muse - Exogenesis: Symphony Parts 1,2, and 3 My song pick five years ago today: Hawkwind - Spirit of the Age My song pick six years ago today: Stuart Hamm - Flow My Tears My song pick seven years ago today: Nightwish - I Wish I Had An Angel My song pick

From: Raise! ; Year: 1981; Genre: Funk/Disco/Pop It's a crazy, crazy week; never been so happy to end a week with the bang that is a Funky Friday Anywho, I happened to be thinking about songs from Earth, Wind & Fire last night, so I'm picking one. Image
From: Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite ; Year: 1973 ; Genre: Blues I'm in a bit of a different mood today and also I've been meaning to pick another song from the late-great Elvis for a bit now, so choosing one of his songs seemed like a great idea. 3051. Yes - Cinema

Image
From 90125 ; Year: 1983; Genre: Progressive Rock/New Wave I was in the mood for some Yes today; this short, but neat instrumental piece that shared its name, (Cinema), with the band made up of Yes members. And actually 90125 was made up of songs from what would've been that band's first album. Hear Cinema on YouTube. 3050. Hallo Venray - She's a Pilot

Image
From: A Million Planes To Fly ; Year: 1993; Genre: Alternative Rock I discovered yet another excellent band that I've only picked one song from: Hallo Venray. You don't hear this band much, if at all here in The States, but they should be heard definitely. If it wasn't for my fellow bloggers Woordenaar and Arthur I would never have been introduced to bands such as this that are famous outside the U.S.. Anyway, this one sounds similar to the rock that was popular at the same time here in America, still has its own distinct sound. Hear She's a Pilot on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Kansas - What's on my Mind My song pick two years ago today: Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Appalachian Snowfall My song pick three years ago today: The Kinks - Dead End Street My song pick four years ago today: Megaherz - Kopfschuss My song pick five years ago today: Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper My song pick six years ago toda
