6783. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Teach Your Children

Image
From: Déjà Vu ; Year: 1970; Genre: Folk Rock/Country Rock This has always been one of my favourite albums from CSN&Y; one of the first records of theirs that I bought. Heck, this is another one of those albums that might as well be a "Greatest Hits" compilation with essentially every one of the tracks getting radio play; definitely easier to name the non hit singles, that's for sure! Teach Your Children is one in particular that has permeated culture since its release; almost to the point of overplay, but with its writing and arranging it avoids that negative aspect in some regard. Apparently Graham Nash wrote it years prior when in The Hollies, but never got recorded until with CS&N. I do not believe that Neil Young had anything to do with this track on the record, but he was part of the act on the record. Without a doubt though, the best aspect of this one is hearing Jerry Garcia playing his pedal steel doing counter-lines, harmonies, and solos.   Hear Teach Yo...

6597. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere

Image
From: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere ; Year: 1969; Genre: Rock/Folk Rock/Country I don't think I will ever tire of Neil Young's music. He is another amazing songwriter with a perfect imperfect voice and a good deal of perfected dissonance in his music, and I would not have it any other way.   Hear Everybody Knows This is Nowhere on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Mr. Big - Suffocation     My song pick 2 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - Modern Man   My song pick 3 years ago today: Cheap Trick - I Must Be Dreamin'   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rufus and Chaka Khan - Dance Wit Me   My song pick 5 years ago today: Van Halen - Love Walks In   My song pick 6 years ago today: Cream - Four Until Late   My song pick 7 years ago today: Blondie - Heart of Glass My song pick 8 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Angel My song pick 9 years ago today: Billy Joel - My Life My song pick 10 years ago today: Creedence...

6459. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Like a Hurricane

Image
From: American Stars 'n Bars ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock/Folk Rock This is one of the quintessential signature songs from the legendary singer/songwriter/musician, which has a perfect blend of both his heavy-hitting, distorted rock and his folk rock/country rock poetics that he is very much known for. It is just one of those songs that is best sitting back and take in every note and word.   Hear Like a Hurricane on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Train - Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush - You Bet Your Life   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Youngbloods - Get Together   My song pick 4 years ago today: Heart - Never   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Nice - Country Pie/Brandenburg Concerto No. 6   My song pick 6 years ago today: Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway My song pick 7 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - Opening (Statement)/He Lives On (Story About the Last Journey of a Warri...

6391. Neil Young and Promise of the Real - Already Great

Image
From: The Visitor ; Year: 2017; Genre: Blues Rock/Hard Rock After enjoying some of his music in the other day, cranking the sound sky high, thought I would choose a track from one of his albums that I was not acquainted with yet. This is the first song on the record and is very much in his highly noted style across the board.   Hear Already Great on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Ladies   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Weirditude   My song pick 3 years ago today: Mott the Hoople - (Do You Remember) The Saturday Gigs   My song pick 4 years ago today: Luther - Everybody Rejoice   My song pick 5 years ago today: Wishbone Ash - Vas Dis   My song pick 6 years ago today: Journey - Spaceman My song pick 7 years ago today: Van Halen - And the Cradle Will Rock... 6240. Neil Young - The Loner

Image
From: Neil Young ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock/Folk Rock This is one of Neil Young's songs that I personally identify with probably the most; have never been one to feel comfortable around others for long and knowing when to take my leave. He uses a lot of good instrumentation, but doesn't go overboard. That organ and, of course, the guitar are just exquisite along with the emotions he stirs with his vocals. Funny enough, being a big Neil Young fan myself it is strange how I heard the cover by Three Dog Night first; only later finding the original.   Hear The Loner on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bootsy's Rubber Band - Munchies for Your Soul   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Just Look At Me Now   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Kinks - Money Talks   My song pick 4 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Humboldt Currant   My song pick 5 years ago today: Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower   My...

6243. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Break the Chain

Image
From: World Record ; Year: 2022; Genre: Hard Rock While he and his band have aged, his music never seems to; at least in the way that his youthful self, drive, and artistry are from that same rebellious and concerned youth from all the decades past.   Hear Break the Chain on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby   My song pick 2 years ago today: Primus - American Life   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Lap of Luxury   My song pick 4 years ago today: Mr. Bungle - Egg   My song pick 5 years ago today: Klaatu - Around the Universe in Eighty Days My song pick 6 years ago today: A-ha - Cry Wolf My song pick 7 years ago today: Bruce Springsteen - Dry Lightning My song pick 8 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Evolution Orange My song pick 9 years ago today: Rush - Madrigal My song pick 10 years ago today: John Fogerty - A Hundred and Ten in the Shade My song pick 11 years ago ...

6050. Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks - Wonderin'

Image
From: Everybody's Rockin' ; Year: 1983; Genre: Rockabilly/Rock 'n Roll Here's one from Neil Young's rockabilly album that got lambasted by most critics and such, however it is still a fun one to listen to from time to time. I'm not sure why, but I have yet to choose something off of it; '50s/60s sound with some '80s sensibilities   Hear Wonderin' on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio - For Those Who Like To Groove   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dio - Sacred Heart   My song pick 3 years ago today: Brave Belt - Dunrobin's Gone   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - The Watcher   My song pick 5 years ago today: Styx - Can't Find My Way Home My song pick 6 years ago today: Return to Forever - Theme to the Mothership My song pick 7 years ago today: Amnesty - Free Your Mind My song pick 8 years ago today: Ennio Morricone & Joan Baez - The Ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti (Here's To You) M...

5828. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Chevrolet

Image
From: World Record ; Year: 2022; Genre: Hard Rock Was very happy the other day to discover this new record from Neil Young and Crazy Horse; I know, I've been slow on the uptake lately when it comes to new music even from bands and artists that I like a lot. Anyway, it's nice to hear that gnarly distorted guitar of Neil Young's and the perfect complimentary rhythm section and supporting artists from Crazy Horse once more; heck, even their aged vocals are a welcome sound and still have that familiar timbre no matter what era.   Hear Chevrolet on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Eddie Rabbitt - 747   My song pick 2 years ago today: B.J. Thomas - Hooked on a Feeling   My song pick 3 years ago today: Tears for Fears - Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Al Di Meola - Passion, Grace & Fire My song pick 5 years ago today: Weezer - Africa My song pick 6 years ago today: Red Rider - Human Race My song pick 7 y...

5732. Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze

Image
From: re·ac·tor ; Year: 1981; Genre: Hard Rock Took a drive around in our old stomping grounds where we used to live over a decade ago and was enjoying some tunes as well; this album was one of the highlights for me personally. Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze is one of the better examples of Neil Young doing the whole grunge thing way before it got popular with a kind of blend of hard rock, punk, and blues rock.   Hear Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Archie Bell & The Drells - The Soul City Walk   My song pick 2 years ago today: Xerath - I Hold Dominion   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steve Miller Band - Going to the Country   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - Sweet Obsession My song pick 5 years ago today: Yes - The Prophet My song pick 6 years ago today: Genesis - The Cinema Show My song pick 7 years ago today: Skid Row - Monkey Business My song pick 8 years ago today: ZZ Top - ...

5465. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Welcome Back

Image
From: Barn ; Year: 2021; Genre: Rock/Blues Rock Started listening to this album once again and decided to "drop the needle" on the record's longest song and thought I'd pick it as well. It's interesting how much this song sounds like it would belong back in the '70s with both the way it's written and played, but also Neil Young's vocals. It sounds so familiar and welcoming to the ears for those who are fans of his work; so heavy and haunting with that lo-fi sound.    Watch the music video on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Water   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Foxy Lady   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rammstein - Ausländer My song pick 4 years ago today: Cat Stevens - Wild World My song pick 5 years ago today: Steely Dan - The Fez My song pick 6 years ago today: The Nice - Diary of an Empty Day My song pick 7 years ago today: Foreigner - Spell Binder ...

5294. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Human Race

Image
From: Barn ; Year: 2021; Genre: Hard Rock Just got to listen to this new Neil Young & Crazy Horse record and this was the second track I heard off of it; I absolutely love it! It's amazing to hear him back to his " Rust " era sound/feel along with the legendary Crazy Horse. His activism is as strong as ever throughout and that signature distorted electric guitar makes for a great backdrop for it. I have to admit though, his more raucous and loud songs happen to be my top favourites of his, although, I do like a lot of his mellower songs as well.   Hear Human Race on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Boston - My Destination/A New World   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Blue Moanin'   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steely Dan - Fire In The Hole My song pick 4 years ago today: The Police - Can't Stand Losing You My song pick 5 years ago today: Benny Carter - Pick Yourself Up My song pick 6 years ago tod...

5283. Ben Keith, Neil Young, Pegi Young - Les Trois Cloches

Image
From: An Americana Christmas ; Year: 2014 (1994); Genre: Country/Christmas Even though only about 1/3 of this song is about Christmas time, it has been included on a few Christmas albums and the overall exposition on the human condition in the lyrics makes it fit in pretty well. This is, of course, the Anglicized version of the song originally performed back during Post War times by Edith Piaf, but this is more of a cover of the version recorded by The Melody Maids in 1948 called The Three Bells ; the song has been covered many times since by many different artists.   Hear Les Trois Cloches on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Primus - The Thing That Should Not Be   My song pick 2 years ago today: Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas in Blue   My song pick 3 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Waterfall My song pick 4 years ago today: Primus - Candy Man My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Teacher My song pick 6 ye...

5202. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Mideast Vacation

Image
From: Life ; Year: 1987; Genre: Rock I have never really listed much to this album prior to recent and I especially like the overall composition of these songs; you can tell a lot of thought went into making them. This is the opening track to the record and has a very 80s feel to it in the rhythm section and the inclusion of subject matter from the time period makes it slightly dated, but a lot of it still resonates today.   Hear Mideast Vacation on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dream Theater - Falls Into the Light   My song pick 3 years ago today: Quarterflash - Night Shift My song pick 4 years ago today: Mastodon - Hearts Alive My song pick 5 years ago today: The (Detroit) Spinners - It's a Shame My song pick 6 years ago today: Neil Young - This Note's For You My song pick 7 years ago today: Dire Straits - Telegraph Road My song pick 8 years ago today: Jethro Tull -...

4991. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Cowgirl in the Sand

Image
From: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere ; Year: 1969; Genre: Hard Rock I felt like listening to something from Neil Young today. This song is probably my favourite off the record, it's got that harder sound that you hear at times from Neil Young & Crazy Horse.   Hear Cowgirl in the Sand on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Band of Horses - Infinite Arms   My song pick 2 years ago today: Paris - Heart of Stone My song pick 3 years ago today: Mudhoney - Empty Shells My song pick 4 years ago today: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama My song pick 5 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Sea of Sorrow My song pick 6 years ago today: Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin) - Summertime My song pick 7 years ago today: Genesis - Seven Stones My song pick 8 years ago today: Stuart Hamm - Call of the Wild My song pick 9 years ago today: Wilson Pickett - Funk Factory My song pick 10 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - L...

4884. Buffalo Springfield - Rock and Roll Woman

Image
From: Buffalo Springfield Again ; Year: 1967; Genre: Psychedelic Rock Had Buffalo Springfield on my mind today, as usual I'm picking one of their songs. This is one of their charting singles; it reminds me a lot of the successor band that came out from them: Crosby, Stills and Nash; mostly due to the singing style of Steven Stills.    Hear Rock and Roll Woman on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Hall & Oates - Head Above Water   My song pick 2 years ago today: Vince Guaraldi Trio - Alma-Ville My song pick 3 years ago today: INXS - New Sensation My song pick 4 years ago today: Amii Stewart - Knock on Wood My song pick 5 years ago today: Link Wray - Comanche My song pick 6 years ago today: Foo Fighters - Everlong My song pick 7 years ago today: Rush - The Analog Kid My song pick 8 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - The Tell-Tale Heart My song pick 9 years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Ethiopia My song pick 10 ...

4362. Neil Young - Heart of Gold

Image
From: Harvest ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock/Folk Rock In the mood for some Neil Young this morning; start to another busy week in the hot summer weather. This is one of his more famous songs, kind of a laid-back super ballad of sorts; I really like the way they add so much musicality while keeping it sparse, especially that steel guitar. 4253. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Shots

Image
From: Re·ac·tor ; Year: 1981; Genre: Hard Rock This is one of the heavy, guitar-driven tracks from Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and with it coming in at just under 8 minutes it gives you a lot of great sound for a long time without having to rewind the song. 4223. Pearl Jam - I Got Id

Image
From: Merkin Ball (single); Year: 1995; Genre: Alternative Rock/Grunge Hadn't heard this one in quite a while; thought'd go ahead and pick it. It features Neil Young playing organ and guitar as well as some vocals; very much mid-1990s alternative rock. Hear I've Got Id on YouTube.
