3795. Queen - A Winter's Tale

Image
From: Made in Heaven ; Year: 1995; Genre: Rock For my fourth pick on this " Winter Theme Week " I'm going with this beautiful number from Freddy Mercury and the guys from Queen. It was, of course, released posthumously to Freddy passing and recorded during the last months of his life. A Winter's Tale has been categorized as a Christmas song by some, but works year around as well in my opinion. Hear A Winter's Tale on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Gloryhammer - Rise of the Chaos Wizards My song pick two years ago today: Foghat - Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool) My song pick three years ago today: Béla Fleck & the Flecktones - Scratch & Sniff My song pick four years ago today: Triumph - A World of Fantasy My song pick five years ago today: Fats Waller - Jitterbug Waltz My song pick six years ago today: Jethro Tull - Pibroch (Cap in Hand) My song pick seven years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Civilize the Universe

3794. Steve Miller Band - Winter Time

Image
From: Book of Dreams ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock Continuing with my 3rd pick in my "Winter" theme week . I don't think I could complete this theme without this song; just lucky I had not chosen it yet I guess. Anyway, this is a beautiful song that plays on a sparsely arranged, wide-open and lonely sound, which really paints a wonderful soundscape you can bring into reality in your mind's eye. Hear Winter Time on YouTube. 3793. Steeleye Span - Wintersmith

Image
From: Wintersmith ; Year: 2013; Genre: Progressive Metal/Folk Metal Funny enough, today a song from this album popped on my playlist randomly; I knew I had my pick for today considering this is day 2 of my " Winter Theme Week ." As with the rest of the album, this, the title track, is based off of the Discworld series, created by Terry Pratchett , mostly the book of the song and album's namesake . Wintersmith is one of the heavier songs on the album and is quite unique in that heavy sound compared to what one normally expects from Steeleye Span; but an incredible song nevertheless. Hear Wintersmith on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Yes - Heart of the Sunrise My song pick two years ago today: The Grass Roots - Lady Pleasure My song pick three years ago today: Ohio Players - Jive Turkey My song pick four years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - Weasel Stomping Day My song pick five years ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Take

Image
From: Dead Winter Dead ; Year: 1995; Genre: Progressive Metal Haven't done a proper theme week for some time now and was thinking about songs that have to do with the season, so I'm doing a "Winter" theme week. Image
From: Rock Around the Clock ; Year: 1955; Genre: Rock 'n Roll For some reason I just wanted to pick some early rock 'n roll today; couldn't go wrong with choosing another one from Bill Halley and his Comets. 3790. Jon Hendricks - No More

Image
From: Tell Me the Truth ; Year: 1975; Genre: Jazz Fusion Last night I learned that jazz legend Jon Hendricks passed away at the young age of 96; a write-up can be found here . I've been a fan of his since I first heard his music; most of it is the technicality combined with the upbeat nature of his songs and delivery thereof. I'm just glad I have his music to still listen to. Hear The '68 single version on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Bootsy's New Rubber Band - Funk Express Card My song pick two years ago today: Marmalade - Rainbow My song pick three years ago today: Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend My song pick four years ago today: Rammstein - Rosenrot My song pick five years ago today: Count Basie - One O'Clock Jump My song pick six years ago today: Nightwish - Storytime My song pick seven years ago today: Kay Kyser and His Orchestra - Praise The Lord and Pass the Ammunition My song pick eight years ago today: Nightwish feat. 3789. Los Bravos - Black is Black

Image
From: Black is Black ; Year: 1966; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Pop Since it's Black Friday , I needed a song with "black" in the title I thought. This one from the Spanish group Los Bravos seemed like a good choice. For a a song that's classified as "pop" it's got a lot of technicality in the music to be heard, especially that driving bass and keyboards. Hear Black is Black on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Led Zeppelin - Thank You My song pick two years ago today: Helmet - Unsung My song pick three years ago today: The Who - Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde My song pick four years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower My song pick five years ago today: Billie Holiday - Summertime My song pick six years ago today: David Bowie - Young Americans My song pick seven years ago today: Eric Robertson - "Spooked" on Classics My song pick eight years ago today: Antonio Salieri - Requiem in C-Mino

3788. Wild Turkey - Eternal Mother - The Return

Image
From: Turkey ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progress Rock Happy Thanksgiving! Couldn't come up with an apropos pick, so I just thought I'd pick one from a band with an appropriate name instead. This is the longest track on the album, just coming in at under 8 minutes, making it I guess the "magnum opus" of the album. Hear Eternal Mother - The Return on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Warren Zevon - Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song) My song pick two years ago today: Danzig - Twist of Cain My song pick three years ago today: Humble Pie - Black Coffee My song pick four years ago today: Pallas - The Cross & the Crucible My song pick five years ago today: Nirvana - Come As You Are My song pick six years ago today: Hawkwind - Space Chase My song pick seven years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Four Wheel Drive My song pick eight years ago today: Savatage - When the Crowds are Gone My song pick nine years ago today: Joe Walsh - Ordin

3787. The Coasters - Smoky Joe's Cafe

Image
From: The Coasters ; Year: 1957; Genre: R&B/Doo-Wop/Rock 'n Roll Smoky Joe's Cafe just keep showing up on shuffle for me when out driving; I've always really liked this song and thought I'd already picked it. I checked and sure enough I hadn't yet, so I have my pick today so it would seem. This is one of those songs that seems a lot longer than it actually is; it's just so engaging and the story draws you in. But the way the vocals are done and the great, danceable R&B music just makes Smoky Joe's Cafe a definite classic and one of my all time favourites. Hear Smoky Joe's Cafe on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Quincy Jones - Killer Joe My song pick two years ago today: Blues Image - Lazy Day Blues My song pick three years ago today: Pendragon - The Pleasure of Hope My song pick four years ago today: Larry Graham and Graham Central Station - Scream My song pick five years ago today: Béla Fleck & the Flecktones

3786. The Guess Who - Cardboard Empire

Image
From: #10 ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock I had The Guess Who on my mind this morning and wanted to pick a somewhat obscure but excellent piece nonetheless. Cardboard Empire has their post " American Woman " sound in spades; Kurt Winter is excellent on the guitar in this song and is one of the main aspects that I like the most. 3785. Rammstein - Wo Bist Du

Image
From: Rosenrot ; Year: 2005; Genre: Neue Deutsche Härte/Industrial Metal It's been a while since I've been heavily into Rammstein; I'm not sure why, but I'm just not as likely to listen to them. I think I overlistened to them, plus it's been quite a while since they've released any new material. I know it's very hard work putting on the show they do and a new album is supposedly in the works, but overall I think the band is winding down. I've never disliked Rammstein, just my love of their music waned a bit. I'm trying to get back into them somewhat, but I don't know if it'll ever be at the level it was before. Hear Wo Bist Du on Vimeo. 3781. Triumph - Hard Road

Image
From: Progression of Power ; Year: 1980; Genre: Hard Rock Was wanting to pick something from Triumph today. I don't think I've picked one off of their Progressions of Power album yet, so that'll be done now. 3778. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Mary Jane's Last Dance

Image
From: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits ; Year: 1993; Genre: Rock Heard some 1990s Tom Petty yesterday and I thought I'd pick one from that era. This is a straight-up song in that signature Tom Petty sound, but I've always thought that the ambiguous lyrics and the fact that he kept it that way really gave this one its full-on popularity. A truly great song from a late-great artist. Hear Mary Jane's Last Dance on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: ABBA - Head Over Heels My song pick two years ago today: Dr. John - Right Place Wrong Time My song pick three years ago today: Billy Joel - All for Leyna My song pick four years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Adventures in Paradise My song pick five years ago today: Megadeth - Blackmail the Universe My song pick six years ago today: Black 47 - Fire of Freedom My song pick seven years ago today: Aerosmith - Amazing My song pick eight years ago today: Banchee - Beautifully Day My song

3775. Wooten, Chambers, Franceschini - Funky D

Image
From: TRYPNOTYX ; Year: 2017; Genre: Funk/Jazz Fusion It just hit me that I completely boned it last week and broke my streak of Funky Fridays. Well, I guess all things eventually come to an end, but I wanted to take it at least to 300 consecutively, I guess I'll have to settle at 216; that's a lot of funk right there. Anyway, here's a Funky Friday pick from Victor Wooten and Co.'s new album; pure delight to the ears. Hear Funky D on YouTube. 3774. Genesis - No Son of Mine

Image
From: We Can't Dance ; Year: 1991; Genre: Rock Had this album come to my mind as I started to think of what to pick today. This rather heavy, dark, and brooding song is probably my favourite from the record; so much attention to detail went into it you can tell both musically and lyrically. 3772. Devo - Are U X-perienced?

Image
From: Shout ; Year: 1984; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop Whilst many purists would probably curl their collective noses at this cover of the Jimi Hendrix classic, in my opinion they did a great job interpreting Are You Experienced in their unique way. 3771. Olivia Newton-John - Have You Never Been Mellow

Image
From: Have You Never Been Mellow ; Year: 1975; Genre: Pop/Rock/Country I've been trying to identify this song for almost 20 years now; I swear I haven't heard it for well over 30 years, and then mostly when I was really young. I finally heard it at a restaurant yesterday and was able to piece enough together to do a search and found it. Anyway, I'm not normally a huge fan of her music, but a lot of it was playing when I was growing up, so there's some special connections to some of it and thus some I do like. Hear Have You Never Been Mellow on YouTube. Image
From: Led Zeppelin IV ; Year: 1971; Genre: Hard Rock Led Zeppelin has been on my mind for some reason today, so you know wot that means. 3767. Jethro Tull - A New Day Yesterday

Image
From: Stand Up ; Year: 1969; Genre: Hard Rock/Blues Rock Had a pining for some earlier Jethro Tull again today, (big surprise there, right?) Anyway, this is one of those albums where you just drop the needle and let it play through and this is the song that kicks off that album oriented rock glory. Still showing a bit of their blues from the earlier album and songs, A New Day Yesterday is one showing that avant-garde style they would use to become as famous as they were. That blues riff the song is based around combined with the interesting musicianship really makes this one stand out. Hear A New Day Yesterday on YouTube.
