6694. The Beach Boys - I Just Wasn't Made for These Times

Image
From: Pet Sounds ; Year: 1966; Genre: Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Rock It is amazing to think this album was released some 60 years ago and is still more or less fitting the very definition of progressive music. Even to this day people, including myself, are inspired by just listening and hearing something mayhap not noticed prior. I swear, in centuries from now this and the other work of Brian Wilson will be marveled like the master composers have been. This is among my favourites on the record and to a casual listener might seem a little weird and disjointed, but everything works like a fine mechanical clock; even the unique  Electro-Theremin .     Hear I Just Wasn't Made for These Times on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Danzig - Thirteen     My song pick 2 years ago today: R.E.M. - Losing My Religion   My song pick 3 years ago today: Midnight Express - Danger Zone   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Ron...

6477. The Beach Boys - When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)

Image
From The Beach Boys Today! ; Year: 1965; Genre: Rock/Pop Just yesterday I was commemorating the loss of one music legend: Sylvester Stewart (Sly Stone) , and today, sadly, am marking the passing of another legend: Brian Wilson . Strangely enough, both left this Earth at almost the same age of 82; although Brian Wilson's 83rd would be on the 20th of this month. Anyway, while there was a lot of talent and sheer artistry throughout the band, Brian Wilson was the main force as a musician's musician and lead songwriter of the band, especially through their biggest years. If it was not for his tragic mental illness he would probably would've continued on and push popular music even further. There are many of his songs that I really like, this being one of them. It is another one that, if you listen to all that is happening with the interwoven melodies and harmonies it is some of the more complex in arranging and writing while in the wrapping of a brief two-minute length.    Hear ...

Image
From: Shut Down Volume 2 ; Year: 1964; Genre: Surf Rock/Pop Seems like, for me at least, when we get into the middle of summer I have bands like The Beach Boys on my mind. I've always really liked this one, especially those complex vocal harmonies arranged in a wall of sound, which really shine when exiting the choruses.   Hear Don't Worry Baby on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Primus - American Life   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Lap of Luxury   My song pick 3 years ago today: Mr. Bungle - Egg   My song pick 4 years ago today: Klaatu - Around the Universe in Eighty Days My song pick 5 years ago today: A-ha - Cry Wolf My song pick 6 years ago today: Bruce Springsteen - Dry Lightning My song pick 7 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Evolution Orange My song pick 8 years ago today: Rush - Madrigal My song pick 9 years ago today: John Fogerty - A Hundred and Ten in the Shade My song pick 10 years ago t...

Image
From: Surfer Girl ; Year: 1963; Genre: Pop/Rock Well, today marks the first day of summer: the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. 4025. The Beach Boys - All Summer Long

Image
From: All Summer Long ; Year: 1964; Genre: Surf Rock/Pop Had Beach Boy's music on my mind and thought I should pick one. I was absolutely positive I picked this song to the point I'm wondering if something happened to my blog... but after scouring the site I turned up absolutely no trace of the song. I'm going ahead and picking it because: 1. I like the song a lot, 2. a lot of memories tied to it, and 3. the current season/subject matter of it. Anyway, excellent song for a hot summer day, even better when the sun is setting. Hear All Summer Long on YouTube. 3650. The Beach Boys - Sloop John B

Image
From: Pet Sounds ; Year: 1966; Genre: Pop/Rock I've had The Beach Boys on my mind since last night, so I thought I'd pick another one of my favourites. I've always loved that booming counter line to the melody that bass, (I believe played by the legendary Carol Kaye), puts into it. And of course the vocals are just amazing as well. Hear Sloop John B on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Mercury Blues My song pick two years ago today: Head Hunters - Chameleon My song pick three years ago today: Yes - Siberian Khatru My song pick four years ago today: Maddy Prior - Mother and Child My song pick five years ago today: Ludwig Van Beethoven - Op.13 - Piano Sonata No.8 " Pathétique " My song pick six years ago today: Chet Atkins - Tears My song pick seven years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Tusk My song pick eight years ago today: Fairport Convention - Tam Lin My song pick nine years ago today: Cream - Tales of B...

3407. The Beach Boys - I Can Hear Music

Image
From: 20/20 ; Year: 1969; Genre: Rock/Pop Heard this song, which is one of my favourites from The Beach Boys, come on my playlist last night. I was absolutely surprised that I hadn't chosen it yet; definitely rectifying that with today's pick. I love the way they use their signature tight harmonic sound whilst keeping the R&B aspects of the original Ronettes version as well as the song's soul inact. Hear I Can Hear Music on YouTube. 2616 The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations

Image
From: Smiley Smile ; Year: 1967; Genre: Psychedelic Rock I had this track on my mind today, and as I usually do, I am making it my pick. The main draw for me on this one has always been the strange chords and the combination thereof throughout the song. Hear Good Vibrations on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - I Want to Take You Higher My song pick two years ago today: Argent - Tragedy My song pick three years ago today: Weather Report - Barbary Coast My song pick four years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Gator Country My song pick five years ago today: The Beatles - I Me Mine My song pick six years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Up Around The Bend My song pick seven years ago today: Rammstein - Du Riechst So Gut

2283 The Beach Boys - I Get Around

Image
From: All Summer Long ; Year: 1964; Genre: Pop Rock After hearing this song the other day I've had it running through my mind off and on ever since; I thought I'd go ahead and pick it. While it is one of their many hits, it still stands out in many ways. The chorus is definitely what this track gets all of its power from; actually it's essentially one long chorus broken up with small verses. Hear I Get Around on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Dick Dale - Nitro My song pick two years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Astronomy My song pick three years ago today: Yoshiki Fukuyama - Angel's Voice My song pick four years ago today: The Kinks - (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman My song pick five years ago today: The Allman Brother's Band - Ain't Waistin' Time No More My song pick six years ago today: Red Sovine - Phantom 309

2063 The Beach Boys - God Only Knows

Image
From: Pet Sounds ; Year: 1966; Genre: Pop/Rock Getting packed up and heading home and thought I would make my pick before getting on the road. Anyway, the other day whilst I was starting to play my new video game Bioshock Infinite I happened upon a barbershop quartet in the game called the The Bee Sharps singing this song . It was quite a treat and they did an amazing job; definitely one of those great moments for me in video games. Anyway, this is an amazing song in so many ways and is one I definitely would've picked at some time in the future. Hear God Only Knows on YouTube.
