6343. Johnny Winter And - Let the Music Play

Image
From: Johnny Winter And ; Year: 1970; Genre: Blues Rock Been really enjoying this album for the last few days; once more thought I would pick one from it. It is kind of interesting knowing that the backing band who where the "And" in the title of the record are essentially wot was left of the band The McCoys of Hang on Sloopy fame. Consisting of Rick Derringer on guitars and backing vocals and his brother Randy Z on drums, joined by Randy Jo Hobbs on Bass and vocals. Initially the album was to be known as " Johnny Winter and the McCoys ," however, the band was dogged by the "bubblegum pop" label, which they wanted to get rid of, shifting towards a more mature, serious sound in later albums, but were not successful. Winter's management too was concerned about him as a serious blues rock musician getting stuck with that label as well, so they dropped the McCoys name from the title. As far as I am aware they never went back to it other than reunion show...

6201. Edgar Winter - Tobacco Road

Image
From: Entrance ; Year: 1970; Genre: Blues Rock Needed to hear something from the brothers Winter to start the workweek. Edgar Winter's rendition of the often covered blues rock standard Tobacco Road seemed like an excellent choice. As luck would also have it, on his freshman studio album his brother Johnny accompanied him, so it is definitely a bonus and a half right there!   Hear Tobacco Road on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'   My song pick 2 years ago today: Eddie Grant - Electric Avenue   My song pick 3 years ago today: Melvins - The Mechanical Bride   My song pick 4 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Little Gandy Dancer   My song pick 5 years ago today: Rush - War Paint My song pick 6 years ago today: Crispian St. Peters - The Pied Piper My song pick 7 years ago today: Dream Theater - When Your Time Has Come My song pick 8 years ago today: Zapp - A...

5946. Edgar Winter's White Trash - Keep Playin' That Rock 'n' Roll

Image
From: Edgar Winter's White Trash ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock/Rock 'n Roll Been meaning to choose another one from Edgar Winter for a little bit now and am now doing so. This is probably the most remembered track from the debut album of his White Trash, they would record two more records, but was eclipsed by both his solo work and with the epic Edgar Winter Group. Keep Playin' That Rock 'n' Roll is just one of those songs where your body will be in motion in some way if you hear it; nice and catchy with some great solos throughout, especially Rick Derringer's guitar playing.   Hear Keep Playin' That Rock 'n' Roll on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Explorers Club - Impact 1 – Fate Speaks   My song pick 2 years ago today: Frank Zappa - No Not Now   My song pick 3 years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Our Wasted Days   My song pick 4 years ago today: Soundgarden - Room a Thousand Years Wide   My song pick 5 years ago today: Morrissey - Fi...

3522. Johnny Winter - Funky Music

Image
From: Johnny Winter And ; Year: 1970; Genre: Blues Rock/Funk Not truly a "funk" song, but rather a tribute to the genre, although it does have a rather funky rhythm and beat. Anyway, this is another one I ran into the other day whilst listening to Johnny Winter and thought that at least in title it would be an excellent Funky Friday pick. You gotta love that guitar solo; both Winter and Rick Derringer shred it up on this track. Hear Funky Music on YouTube.
