6734. The Moody Blues - Dawn: Dawn is a Feeling

Image
From: Days of Future Passed ; Year: 1967; Genre: Progressive Rock/Symphonic Rock Whilst driving around this morning I had this song come on and it has stuck in my brain ever since, which is certainly not expected from genres such as from this record. I believe that I have stated before that the 'Moodies were my "gateway drug" into all music progressive and I've never wavered in my love of the band. It is kind of superficial to say with all of the amazing and beautiful songs on the record, but this is one of the prettiest, especially with the orchestral accompaniment, which I believe was actually Mike Pinder overdubbing all of the "instruments" played on the Mellotron , but there was a proper orchestra on the record as well, mostly in the interludes. Pinder's Mellotron was one of the main cornerstones for the band's emerging sound and those contributions really show why Days of Future Passed and their subsequent songs are such landmarks in studio reco...

6657. The Moody Blues - Send Me No Wine

Image
From: On the Threshold of a Dream ; Year: 1969; Genre: Country Rock Was fully intending on choosing another song today, but ever since getting ready to write this blog post Send Me No Wine has been incessantly playing in my mind. It's really difficult for me to pick favourites from this record, or really a favourite of their first ten albums to be honest. At least for this record, and most of their others of the period, it is mostly due to how they arranged and wrote the songs to segue perfectly into each other as to make the listener keep playing the disc without skipping around or putting an entire other album on. Anyway, this is quite a catchy tune with a lot of interesting aspects within, one in particular is how they use the Mellotron to imitate a pedal steel guitar to some degree, which helps give it that signature country "boing" if you will.    Hear Send Me No Wine on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Spanky and Our Gang - ...

6266. The Moody Blues - My Song

Image
From: Every Good Boy Deserves Favour ; Year: 1971; Genre: Progressive Rock/Symphonic Rock Pulled my vinyl records out of the case last night, towards the end I came upon my collection of classic Moody Blues records. There is just something you cannot quite quantify about the feeling of actually holding the sleeve and disc in your hand. Even though I have not played them in a long time, I am glad I still have them. Anyway, this album in particular I had to stop and look it over and peruse the gatefold as well as peer in at the vinyl. The cover art of this one for some reason has always caught my attention in physical form; it was done quite well. This song, or rather My Song is the final track on side two and is a perennial that I like to hear. This is one written and sung by the late-great Mike Pinder, who apparently wanted his vocal to sound "spacey," so they actually placed a box on his head and thinned out the sound to make it sound like a communication from orbit, of at ...

5954. The Moody Blues - Watching and Waiting

Image
From: To Our Children's Children's Children ; Year: 1969; Genre: Progressive Rock Just seemed like a great day for something from the 'Moodys'; specifically this record. Most of their albums from this era are all perfect for just "dropping the needle" and letting it play through. I believe that this was the only single from To Our Children's Children's Children and is interestingly enough the final song on side two. Even though it's not my top favourite track on the record, it is definitely a good "cool down" song, which I suppose being at the end of the record makes more sense.   Hear Watching and Waiting on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Where Did Saturday Go?   My song pick 2 years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Love In Space   My song pick 3 years ago today: Harlequin - Shine On   My song pick 4 years ago today: Tower of Power - It's Not The Crime   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Beatles - Th...

5740. The Moody Blues - In My World

Image
From: Long Distant Voyager ; Year: 1981; Genre: Progressive Rock The record Long Distant Voyager has always had a very special place for me amongst The Moody Blues' albums. In a sense it was the "gateway" if you will, for me into their music and thus also the same "gateway" that got me initially into the progressive forms of rock and metal music that continues to this day. It's always a hoot to put it on the turntable and drop the needle and let the entire disc play; it has never fallen out of favour for me. Anyway, In My World is the closing track for the exciting and hit-laden Side A and is a perfect track to end it in my opinion. Both Justin Heyward's vocals and B.J. Cole's steel guitar playing for me are the biggest draws.   Hear In My World on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Oomph! - Kennst Du Mich?   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rare Earth - 6-3-4-5   My song pick 3 years ago today: Commodores - Nightshift   My song pick 4 ...

5645. The Moody Blues - Let Me Go

Image
From: The Magnificent Moodies ; Year: 1965; Genre: Rock/Pop Even though their music from subsequent records blew this one out of the water so to speak, there's always been a special place in my mind for the early era of The Moody Blues; it's especially a treat to hear Denny Laine's singing with the band on this album.     Hear Let Me Go on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Heidevolk - Winteroorlog   My song pick 2 years ago today: King Crimson - Providence   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio - O Christmas Tree   My song pick 4 years ago today: Bad Company - Gone, Gone, Gone My song pick 5 years ago today: Band of Horses - Whatever, Wherever My song pick 6 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Seagull My song pick 7 years ago today: Rick James - Dance Wit' Me My song pick 8 years ago today: Miles Davis - Milestones My song pick 9 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Warriors My song pick 10 years ago toda...

5563. The Moody Blues - Question

Image
From: A Question of Balance ; Year: 1970; Genre: Progressive Rock Question was amongst the songs that got me into The Moody Blues back when I was a child; really, they were my "gateway drug" into the genre that is progressive rock/art rock and such. I cannot name an album of theirs that I dislike, especially from the debut through the 1980; those guys really knew how to write, record, and produce great music. Anyway, I've always loved the "sections" within this song that go from energetic acoustic, to hard rock, and to soft ballad and everything in between.   Hear Question on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Les Paul - Goofus   My song pick 2 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Back on the Borderline   My song pick 3 years ago today: Quasar - Fire in the Sky   My song pick 4 years ago today: Curved Air - Elfin Boy My song pick 5 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Goblin King of the Darkstorm Galaxy My song pick 6 years ago today: Russkaja -...

5248. The Moody Blues - The Spirit

Image
From: The Other Side of Life ; Year: 1986; Genre: Progressive Rock/Synthpop Yesterday I learned of the passing of The Moody Blues' mainstay member, drummer/songwriter/poet Graeme Edge. As I've said before this band was really not only my "gateway" into progressive rock, but I'd have to say my personal like of music in general. Sadly, he's the second main member of the band to die, the first being Ray Thomas, who was probably best-known as the flautist of the band. From wot I understand the band has more of less come to an end; such is the reality of artists that have performed for this long. Anyway, back in the '80s I remember that The Moody Blues were having a bit of a renaissance in their popularity and I heard their new material a lot back then. The Other Side of Life in particular was one that remember well as an album from that period and one that got me interested in the band as well. The Spirit is, as far as I'm aware, the only track of the rec...

4911-13. The Moody Blues - Have You Heard (Part 1)/Voyage/Have You Heard (Part 2)

Image
From: On the Threshold of a Dream ; 1969; Genre: Symphonic Rock Been meaning to revisit On the Threshold of a Dream for a bit now. This is the full-on-epic that closes out the album. I love the grandiosity of the entire piece which begins with a psychedelic/symphonic rock piece with a grand interlude and then finished by returning to the song. It's quite a neat piece to listen to.   Hear The Dream , Have You Heard (Parts 1+2) and Voyage on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Dust   My song pick 2 years ago today: Savatage - Not What You See My song pick 3 years ago today: Winger - Without the Night My song pick 4 years ago today: Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland My song pick 5 years ago today: Jackson Browne - Running on Empty My song pick 6 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - This Long Silence My song pick 7 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Stone of Love My song pick 8 years ago today: The Crickets (Buddy Holley) - Tha...

4242. The Moody Blues - Breaking Point

Image
From: Sur La Mer ; Year: 1988; Genre: Rock Mid/late 1980s Moody Blues on my mind today, so I'm picking one from that era. This is another one of their songs with a bit of synth; the Moodies at least kept themselves very relevant through that period, which is quite different from their 60s and 70s material, that's for sure. Hear Breaking Point on YouTube. 3933. The Moody Blues - I Know You're Out There Somewhere

Image
From: Sur La Mer ; Year: 1988; Genre: Rock/Synthpop For some reason I had this song on my mind yesterday; I absolutely thought I had chosen it already, but to my surprise I had not. I know I've mentioned it before, but The Moody Blues were my "gateway drug" so to speak into progressive rock. This and other ones of the era were the songs that got my into the band in the first place; once I dug through their back catalogue I ended up buying a lot of their records. And from there I looked into similar groups and immediately fell in love with the genre. Anyway, I Know You're Out There Somewhere has an upbeat yet urgent feeling about it, especially in the lyrics. The keyboards are the main draw for me along with the rhythm section. Hear I Know You're Out There Somewhere on YouTube. 3834. The Moody Blues - It Ain't Necessarily So

Image
From: The Magnificent Moodies ; Year: 1965; Genre: R&B/Blues Rock Yesterday I learned that Ray Thomas passed away a few days ago; an obituary can be read here . For those unaware, he was a founding member of the band The Moody Blues and besides songwriting, arranging, vocals, and playing a plethora of instruments for the band, most notably the flute, as most would remember from their mega-hit Nights in White Satin . Anyway, on this early song from their first album he lends lead vocals to this beautiful cover from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess . Hear It Ain't Necessarily So on YouTube. Image
From: The Present ; Year: 1983; Genre: Rock/New Wave The Present is one of the more overlooked albums from The Moody Blues' discography; it's got some great gems on it, including this lead track. 3149-50. The Moody Blues - In the Beginning/Lovely to See You Again

Image
From: On the Threshold of a Dream ; Year: 1969; Genre: Progressive Rock It's another day that I heard a song the day prior and it's still in my mind; as I always do, I'm picking it. In the Beginning , which is mostly spoken word with electronic background music/sounds, is often used as an intro to both Lovely to See You Again and the album as well, the same as with all of their records from the time. The smooth rhythm and memorable riff that drives it makes this track the hit that it is. Hear In the Beginning/Lovely to See You Again on YouTube.
