William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: Zenyattà Mondatta ; Year: 1980; Genre: New Wave/Rock Kind of taken aback that I'm over 11 years into this blog and hadn't picked this one yet, which is one of The Police's biggest hits. Both the music and the lyrics work excellently together to make a truly wonderfully written/arranged song; really, there's so much to listen to on this one. From: Synchronicity ; Year: 1983; Genre: Rock/New Wave Here's a very interesting and weird song from The Police; has song progressive rock traits with the insanity of the delivery of the lyrics and the out of this world music accompanying it. From: Outlandos d'Amour ; Year: 1978; Genre: New Wave/Reggae Rock I heard this song the other day on the television; hadn't heard it in a while and still love that early sound of The Police. It's still amazing to think this was the sound that would take the early 80s by storm; they sure did make their mark. Hear Can't Stand Losing You on YouTube. From: A Very Special Christmas ; Year: 1987; Genre: Traditional/Christmas Carol I'm continuing to pick songs for Christmas; this one definitely swings to the Sacred side of the Holiday, which is my favourite side. It's a traditional song that is originally a Basque hymn about the Archangel Gabriel coming to Mary to tell her the glorious news that she would be the mother of Jesus. Actually some of the words of the song come from the Gospel of Luke, so it's actually a lot older yet. Hear Gabriel's Message on YouTube. From: Outlandos d'Amour ; Year: 1978; Genre: New Wave/Reggae The other day I had this album and other early Police material on my mind and thought I would pick one. I always like reggae and when people use it in different ways; The Police were one that fused it quite well with the more mainstream wave/rock/punk/pop sound and made a very interesting mix that has been duplicated many times over the years; this song is one of the best of their earlier attempts to do so. Hear So Lonely on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Ben E. King - Stand By Me My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow My song pick three years ago today: Nightwish - Wishmaster My song pick four years ago today: The Violent Femmes - Color Me Once My song pick five years ago today: The Who - Eminence Front My song pick six years ago today: John Fogerty - Almost Saturday Night

From: Reggatta de Blanc ; Year: 1979; Genre: New Wave/Reggae I heard this song on the radio today; as soon as I heard it I knew I had my pick. In my opinion this is one of the more interesting tracks from Sting and The Police; a very nice fusion of rock and reggae. Hear Walking on the Moon on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Led Zeppelin - Misty Mountain Hop My song pick two years ago today: Émile Waldteufel - Op. 232 - Rococo-Polka My song pick three years ago today: Sky - Sarabande My song pick four years ago today: Lynyrd Skynyrd - On The Hunt My song pick five years ago today: Ian Anderson - A Better Moon

From: Ghost in the Machine ; Year: 1981; Genre: New Wave Darn, it has been a busy weekend; hopefully tomorrow will slow down a bit. Anyway, today I heard a bunch of music from The Police, so I figured I would pick something from the band. This is one I've always loved of their material; I just love the dark and brooding music/lyrics. Hear Invisible Sun on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Screaming Trees - Shadow of the Season My song pick two years ago today: Genesis - The Musical Box My song pick three years ago today: Savatage - The Dungeons Are Calling My song pick four years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - I'm Alive My song pick five years ago today: The Grateful Dead - Uncle John's Band

From Synchronicity ; Year: 1983; Genre: New Wave/Pop Today when I was sitting in the car waiting for an appointment this song came on the radio. It's weird, but for me personally I've always had it very much connected to the time period when I first heard it; because of that it hasn't become as cliché to me as it probably is to others. If you don't really listen that closely to the lyrics it almost sounds like a love song, but, as you probably know, the song is about a stalker and his ex-lover. I was taken aback the first time I actually sat down and listened to the lyrics; for quite a while I never really listened to them; I was rather focused on the music. I like the smooth and highly predicable chord progression, however my favourite part of the song is the middle eight and how they enter and exit it. Watch the music video on YouTube. 1048 The Police - The King of Pain I have no clue why this track popped into my mind; I haven't heard it in quite a while, but it fits my mood fairly well. This song has quite a few aspects that I really like, especially the chord progression; I love the transitions between the verse and chorus as well. It is an excellently constructed song in more ways than a few in my opinion. Here is the studio version on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Chet Atkins - Yakety Axe My song pick two years ago today: Benjamin Britten - War Requiem +

710 ( The Police - Synchronicity II ) A bit ago I had someone inform me that my bass playing reminded him of Sting, which I took as a compliment. It is odd, however, because I have never considered Sting as one of my main influences, however I like much of his music and consider him a highly accomplished bassist. Anyway, this is one of my favourite songs from The Police, which has nice bass line and rhythm to it. Here is a video with the studio version on YouTube. Here is a live performance of the song on YouTube. +

This is one of my favorite songs from Sting and the Police; it deals with the subject of alienation. The dynamics of the song are excellent, I love the way that the song drags a bit in the verses but picks up in the chorus. The rhythm section of this song is the most powerful aspect in my opinion; this is apparent in the interlude at the end of the chorus. Here is the studio version on YouTube.
