6868. Weather Report - Punk Jazz

Image
From: Mr. Gone ; Year: 1978; Genre: Jazz Fusion Don't know why I have not been listening to as much Weather Report as I used to. At that, the last time I chose one of their songs was over three years ago, and it was one off of this record to boot. For the last couple of decades I consumed a lot of the Weather Report material as well as associated acts and artists; Wayne Shorter and, of course Jaco in particular. I'm thinking that it might have to do with delving into other Fusion bands and players that've taken up my attention. Like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock and his Head Hunters, as well as all of their related bands and solo artists, which is extensive if you think about it. It is a real treat every time one of Joe Zawinul and Weather Report's music pops on my playlist; still enjoy it a lot. Anyway, this is one of Jaco Pastorius' songs, and whilst being a tour d'force in bass guitar virtuosity, all of the other band members get to ...

5707. Weather Report - River People

Image
From: Mr. Gone ; Year: 1978; Genre: Jazz Fusion In this one the band really leans into the more electronica aspects of their sound to make this rather funky piece of jazz fusion. You could almost call it a "soundscape"overall from the rhythm section, however there is a lot going up front that really grabs your attention.   Hear River People on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Audioslave - Until We Fall   My song pick 2 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Power of the Laser Dragon Fire   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Cold Dead Reckoning (2044)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Good Rockin' My song pick 5 years ago today: Carmen - Bullfight My song pick 6 years ago today: The Outfield - Say It Isn't So My song pick 7 years ago today: Quarterflash - Take Me To Heart My song pick 8 years ago today: Carly Simon - You’re so Vain My song pick 9 years ago today: Clifford Nyren - Keep Running Away My song ...

5158. Weather Report - Surucucú

Image
From: I Sing The Body Electric ; Year: 1972; Genre: Jazz/Jazz Fusion Felt like listening to some Jazz Fusion today; the first place I normally go when in such a mood is Weather Report; today is no different. This is one of the live recordings off the record from a concert in Tokyo, Japan. It's a little more avant-garde in style than their more melodic songs, but still fun to hear and the music is very enjoyable.    Hear Surucucú on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Steeleye Span - Summer Lady   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bobby Freeman - Do You Want To Dance? Image
From: Tale Spinnin' ; Year: 1975; Genre: Jazz Fusion It's another day where I have a band on my mind, and yes, it's Weather Report. 4711. Weather Report - The Moors

Image
From: I Sing the Body Electric ; Year: 1972; Genre: Jazz Fusion For some reason I had this record on my mind this morning and, as I always do, took it as a sign I needed to choose another song from it. This song has a very middle eastern flare/feel to it, (as you could probably tell by the title), with a mix of jazz fusion, which makes it very unique sounding. Hear The Moors on YouTube. 3638. Weather Report - Cannonball

Image
From: Black Market ; Year: 1976; Genre: Jazz Fusion In the mood for some more jazz fusion; this one, which was written to honour at the time, the recently deceased jazz legend and Joe Zawinul's ex-bandleader Cannonball Adderley , seemed to fit my mood. I love the melodiousness that Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Zawinul put into this song on their respective instruments; a truly beautiful song. Hear Cannonball on YouTube. 3465. Weather Report - Blackthorn Rose

Image
From: Mysterious Traveler ; Year: 1974; Genre: Jazz Fusion Essentially Blackthorn Rose is a showcase of some great sax playing by Mr. Wayne Shorter with modest accompaniment. The melodiousness of his playing is incredible; definitely music to be felt to the core. Hear Blackthorn Rose on YouTube. 3188. Weather Report - Palladíum

Image
From: Heavy Weather ; Year: 1977; Jazz Fusion/Funk Might not be a true "funk" track on this Funky Friday, but the basis of most of Palladíum is funk mixed with Latin beats, so I should be fine. Anyway, this is another one that features excellent leads by both Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter; of course Jaco is excellent as always on bass and the drums and percussions by Alex Acuña and Manolo Badrena are the glue that holds the entire thing together and make it so danceable. Hear Palladíum on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Percy Sledge - When a Man Loves a Woman My song pick two years ago today: Peter Gabriel - Steam My song pick three years ago today: Phil Collins - Something Happened on the Way to Heaven My song pick four years ago today: Pallas - Rise and Fall, Part 2 My song pick five years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Black Blade My song pick six years ago today: Rammstein - Waidmanns Heil My song pick seven years ago today: Jethro Tul...

2733 Weather Report - Predator

Image
From: Domino Theory ; Year: 1984; Genre: Jazz Fusion I'm definitely in the mood for some Weather Report today, and something from their somewhat later period to be exact. This is one from saxophonist Wayne Shorter's pen; while the sound is very 1980s and dated for that time, it's still a really good song with some excellent musicianship all around. Hear Predator on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Joni Mitchell - Hejira My song pick two years ago today: Dream Theater - Under a Glass Moon My song pick three years ago today: Pearl Jam - Light Years My song pick four years ago today: Band of Horses - Factory My song pick five years ago today: Rush - Freewill My song pick six years ago today: R.E.M. - Stand My song pick seven years ago today: Queen - Killer Queen

2672 Weather Report - Crystal

Image
From: I Sing the Body Electric ; Year: 1972; Genre: Jazz Fusin This morning I had a lot of music from Joe Zawinul's Weather Report on my mind; this was one that was massively in the forefront. It's a truly great tune, but maybe a bit odd for some, but amazing none the less. Hear Crystal on YouTube. 2605 Weather Report - Havona

Image
From: Heavy Weather ; Year: 1977; Genre: Jazz Fusion Boy, after listening to a whole bunch of Jazz Fusion last night I really got into the mood for some more today. This is one of their more listenable tracks, which is from the pen of Jaco Pastorius; not to say it's not technical, because it is, just well constructed. Hear Havona on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Frank Zappa/The Mothers of Invention - Who Are the Brain Police? 2459 Weather Report - Orange Lady

Image
From: Weather Report ; Year: 1971; Genre: Jazz Fusion The other day Woordenaar picked a Weather Report song: A Remark You Made , and it got me back in the mood to listen to some of their music again. As far as I know, I don't believe that I have chosen on off of their debut album yet, so I'll remedy that today. This is a kind of an ambient track that's quite pretty; you can definitely hear Miles Davis' influence on the band. Hear Orange Lady on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Wild Spirit My song pick two years ago today: Wings - Jet My song pick three years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Welcome Home My song pick four years ago today: Puhdys - Alt Wie Ein Baum My song pick five years ago today: Christian Pezold - Minuet in G Major (Anna Magdalena Notebook II), BWV Anh. 114 My song pick six years ago today: Berlin - The Metro

2377-9 Weather Report - Medley: Vertical Invader; T.H.; Dr. Honoris Causa

Image
From: I Sing the Body Electric ; Year: 1972; Genre: Jazz Fusion I was thinking about picking one from Weather Report today and this monster of a song came to mind. As the title states, this is a medley consisting of three songs: Vertical Invader , T.H. , and Dr. Honoris Causa . It is also one of three tracks on their amazing '72 release I Sing the Body Electric . It is definitely a song for a person who is a fan of music in the extreme not to mention Jazz; it might be a bit too technical for a casual listener. Hear " The Medley " on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Band of Horses - Laredo My song pick two years ago today: Fairport Convention - Dawn My song pick three years ago today: Jethro Tull - Alive and Well and Living In My song pick four years ago today: .38 Special - Chain Lightnin' My song pick five years ago today: Cream - Swlabr My song pick six years ago today: Three Dog Night - Celebrate

2200 Weather Report - Second Sunday in August

Image
From: I Sing the Body Electric ; Year: 1972; Genre: Jazz Fusion Well, I made it to 2200 songs picked... I really wish I had a more appropriate song to go along with the occasion, but you cannot go wrong with picking a Weather Report song on a day like today. I really wanted to pick one of this album this morning; out of their albums, I personally have I Sing the Body Electric as my third favourite behind Mysterious Traveler and Heavy Weather . This actually was not the song I intended on picking at all; all of the other ones I had in mind were not on YouTube. However, this track seems a pretty nice fit for today; if only I'd have thought to pick it a few days ago on Sunday it would've been perfect. I really like Wayne Shorter and Miroslav Vitouš' playing on this one; it's almost ethereal at times. Hear Second Sunday in August on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: AC/DC - Thunderstruck My song pick two years ago today: Victor Wooten - Norwegian ...

1502 Weather Report - Barbary Coast

Image
1502 Weather Report - Barbary Coast From: Black Market , Year: 1976 Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk I was having a lot of fun playing with this song yesterday; I decided that if I had not picked it I would today. Well, low and behold, I checked and surprisingly I hadn't added it to my list yet. This is one of my favouite tunes from the band, I like how it takes you all over the place. I absolutely love how they used the blast of a train horn at the beginning to usher in the song and at the end you hear the click-clack of the train going by; almost as if the song is a symbolic train itself. This was one of only two songs on the Black Market album to feature Jaco Pastorius; it is actually a composition of his as well. Jaco Pastorius would go on to replace Alphonso Johnson and join the band full time for the next four studio albums and was then be replaced by Victor Bailey. It's amazing just how many great bassists played in this band. Hear Barbary Coast on YouTube. Watch a li...

1400 Jaco Pastorius - Kuru/Speak Like a Child

Image
1400 Jaco Pastorius - Kuru/Speak Like a Child From: Jaco Pastorius , Year: 1976 Genre: Jazz Fusion I'm making my 1400 th song pick today. I thought that this awesome medley or sorts written by Jaco Pastorius and Herbie Hancock would be rather nice for the occasion. This is true piece of Jazz Fusion; it has more of a Rock, R&B, and Funk influence with amazing technical musicianship. Jaco sure lays down quite a mean groove throughout Kuru on his bass along with the drums/percussion. Herbie Hancock's keyboards and a host of string instruments fill up the rest quite nicely. I'd have to say that my favourite part of this piece is their rendition of Hancock's Speak like a Child ; there's so much feeling in their playing. I love how they bounce back and forth between the two songs' themes, it makes the overall piece quite dynamic. Hear Kuru/Speak Like a Child on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Grass Roots - Let's Live For To...

1058 Weather Report - Cucumber Slumber

Image
1058 Weather Report - Cucumber Slumber This Jazz Fusion piece is one of my favourites from the band. The grooving and bouncy rhythm along with Alphonso Johnson's funk bass line lays out a perfect canvas for Joe Zawinul and company to paint a beautiful musical landscape. I absolutely love their entire '74 Mysterious Traveler album. It is a very nice record to just start and let play and sometime even let it repeat multiple times; it makes excellent working music. Here is the studio version on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: ZZ Top - Gimme All Your Lovin' My song pick two years ago today: Eric Clapton - After Midnight +

Song 588 ( Jaco Pastorius - Slang )

Image
This is probably Jaco's best known bass solo. It is quite bombastic and flashy, as to be expected with a solo on any instrument. While not really listenable to the ears of the average listener, to a connoisseur of music, (especially a bassist), it is quite nice to listen to. To create this live masterpiece he used loops and effects on his bass along with his incredible talent and showmanship. Here is the recording from 8:30 on YouTube. Here is a live performance of the song circa '79 on YouTube. Here is another extended live version on YouTube. +

Song 509 ( Weather Report - Teen Town )

Image
This is more of a rocker from the Fusion-Jazz band Weather Report from the pen of Jaco Pastorius. For that reason it is one of the songs on this album that showcases his bass playing a lot. Oddly enough, with that being said, my favorite version of this song was a Marcus Miller cover of the song, which can be found here on YouTube. One of the aspects that I like the most about this song is how Joe Zawinul plays the same melody as Jaco on the synthesizer, which makes a neat chorus effect. Hear the studio version of Teen Town on YouTube. Here is a live performance from '77 on YouTube. Here is an excellent live version from '78 on YouTube. +

Song 204 (Weather Report--"A Remark You Made")

Image
I wanted to pick a Fusion-Jazz tune from Weather Report today, and I thought that this would be an excellent choice. I just love Joe Zawinul’s beautiful keyboard work on this song. This song features mostly Wayne Shorter’s saxophone and Jaco Pastorius’ bass as the lead instruments and they both show off their virtuosity in this one. This is a nice calm tune for a busy day. Here is a recording on YouTube. Here is an excellent live performance from '78 on YouTube. +
