6487. Mac Davis - I Believe In Music

Image
From: I Believe In Music ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock/Country Whilst growing up I was exposed a great deal to Mac Davis' music, (man, was he a proficient songwriter), both as performer and others playing wot he wrote. In more recent times I've started to rediscover this master songsmith's vast recordings and just how great of a writer he was both musically and lyrically. Anyway, from wot I have read this song's genesis came about while he was attending a party where for some reason they were about to have a seance. They asked him to join and he apparently declined, someone asked him if he believed in such and off the cuff he replied "I believe in music." He was immediately struck by the idea and the creative process just went into overdrive; he grabbed a nearby guitar and did what he did best and created a memorable song. Apparently thereafter he closed out his live shows with this tune, which became one of his signature pieces. With that singalong gospel chorus ...

From: Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me ; Year: 1972; Genre: Country/Soft Rock It always amazes me just how many hit songs Mac Davis has written; both ones he recorded and ones other artists made hits of. This is one of his most popular singles to his name both as performer and writer, and for me at least the first song that comes to mind when he is mentioned; although there are many more.   Hear Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bob Marley and The Wailers - Freedom Time   My song pick 2 years ago today: Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Nothing Ever Happens   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Living in These Hard Times   My song pick 4 years ago today: Parliament - Livin' the Life   My song pick 5 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog   My song pick 6 years ago today: Savatage - Skraggy's Tomb My song pick 7 years ago today: Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Countdown My song pick 8 years...

6156. Mac Davis - Lucas Was a Redneck

Image
From: Stop and Smell the Roses ; Year: 1974; Genre: Funk/Country/Blues Something quite different for this Funky Friday . Here's a country-funk gem from the extremely prolific songwriter and performer Mac Davis; even though this is the first song that I have chosen by him, I can guarantee I have chose some that he wrote. Boy, he does get right to the point and cuts deep in this commentary about the titular Lucas in a bluesy country funk style that I wouldn't be surprised to hear Primus do a cover of.   Hear Lucas Was a Redneck on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Carmen - People Dressed in Black   My song pick 2 years ago today: Boston - We're Ready   My song pick 3 years ago today: Alestorm - Treasure Island   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Human League - Do or Die   My song pick 5 years ago today: Humble Pie - Get Down To It My song pick 6 years ago today: King Crimson - Exiles My song pick 7 years ago today: Soundgarden -...
