6820. Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show - Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball

Image
From: Sloppy Seconds ; Year: 1972; Genre: Country Rock/Comedy Yesterday I heard of Dennis Locorriere's passing; he was the lead vocalist and whilst played the lead guitar primarily, he basically at one time or another played almost every instrument with Dr. Hook. This rather fun comical track with its old timey sound really opens up the record beautifully. As with all the material on Sloppy Seconds , it was written by noted song-smith  Shel Silverstein , who earlier the same year recorded it as the title track to his own album.    Hear Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Soundgarden - Searching WIth My Good Eye Closed     My song pick 2 years ago today: John Cougar Mellencamp - R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. 6645. Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show - Sing Me a Rainbow

Image
From: Doctor Hook ; Year: 1972; Genre: Country Rock/Folk Rock Every now and then I go back and listen Dr. Hook, and as usual I thoroughly enjoy it. This is kind of a neat little country/folk/rock waltz that is very existential both musically and lyrically.    Hear Sing Me a Rainbow on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Faith No More - The Morning After     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Rolling Stones - The Lantern   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bernard Wright - We're Just the Band   My song pick 4 years ago today: Scandal featuring Patty Smyth - The Warrior   My song pick 5 years ago today: Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight My song pick 6 years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - My Own Space   My song pick 7 years ago today: Foreigner - Hot Blooded My song pick 8 years ago today: Jon Hendricks - No More My song pick 9 years ago today: Bootsy's New Rubber Band - Funk Express Card My song pick 10 ye...

4177. Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show - Sylvia's Mother

Image
From: Doctor Hook ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock/Country Rock This is another track that brings back a lot of memories for me; it's always been among my favourites from the band. You gotta love the raw emotion and energy in this rather sorrowful song; from what I can understand the song is based on a real happening to one of the band members trying to get in touch with an old girlfriend.  Hear Sylvia's Mother on YouTube. 3991. Dr. Hook - Sharing the Night Together

Image
From: Pleasure & Pain ; Year: 1978; Genre: Soft Rock It's amazing how many songs drop from the dark recesses of your brain at times; ones you've not heard in ages. Most of the ones that fit that category for me are mostly songs from the mid-late '70s into the early '80s: when I was very young. They are mostly "Top 40" songs I heard from either the radio playing or someone was playing it. I'm not sure I'll ever run out of music from that time period, who knows, right? Anyway, whilst I've heard this song many times, up until just a bit ago, (when it popped into my mind), I did not even know who performed this song and was slightly surprised that it was Dr. Hook, but by the late '70s a lot of bands were getting into either hard punk or the softer rock sound if they were evolving musically. All in all it's actually a pretty good song in its own right, a perfect song to slow dance to and rub beltbuckles with that special someone in your...

Image
869 ( Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show - Cover of the Rolling Stone ) Had a few songs in mind this morning, but when I heard this one again on the radio I knew I had my pick. A fantastic irreverent jab at pop culture and egotistical musicians; truly an awesome piece of music. Here is the studio version on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Crazed Institution +
