4011. Megadeth - Rattlehead

Image
From: Killing is my Business... and Business is Good! ; Year: 1985; Genre: Thrash Metal Ah yes, this is the song that is the namesake and is an ode of sorts to Megadeth's mascot: Vic Rattlehead . And it's definitely a song worthy of him; the technicality and velocity at which the band plays is amazing as always. Hear Rattlehead on YouTube. 4010. Sonny & Cher - Mama Was a Rock and Roll Singer

Image
From: Mama Was a Rock and Roll Singer, Papa Used to Write All Her Songs ; Year:1973; Genre: Rock/Pop I have no reason whatsoever why I'm choosing another song from Sonny and Cher, but they were on my mind when sitting down to write this post, so there's your reason I suppose. Anyway, this is kind of an interesting piece of music; over the almost 10 minutes of its play time it transitions between many different styles of pop music. Some of it is their brand of bubblegum pop, other parts remind me a wee bit of the Beatles, and others somewhat similar to Elton John, well, at least to my ears anyway. Hear Mama Was a Rock and Roll Singer on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Weather Report - Cannonball My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Pan Dance My song pick three years ago today: Chris Squire - Silently Falling My song pick four years ago today: Jim Croce - Bad, Bad Leroy Brown My song pick five years ago today: Béla Fleck and the Flecktones

4009. Jethro Tull - Crossword

Image
From: Stormwatch ; Year: 1979; Genre: Progressive Rock Was thinking about late '70s Tull today, and thought I'd pick one of their rarer songs from that era. Crossword only got released on a compilation album in the late '80s and then found its way onto Stormwatch when it was remastered. Anyway, that bass throughout the song is what drives the song along and is one of the main attractions to the song, but the keyboard and guitar are right up there as well. Makes me wonder a lot of times why it did not get put on the album in the first place, it's a dang good song. Hear Crossword on YouTube. 4007. Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees

Image
From: Bare Trees ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock I remember growing hearing a lot of this brand of rock. It wasn't focused on one or two hit singles, but rather the entire album was conceived, written, and arranged as to be one album of songs meant to put the needle down and listen to it in its entirety; it definitely was musical bliss. Anyway, here's the title-track from one album that fits the description of "album oriented rock" for sure. Hear Bare Trees on YouTube. 4006. Murray Head - Say It Ain't So, Joe

Image
From: Say It Ain't So ; Year: 1975; Genre: Rock Was looking into other songs from artists who, here in America at least, are considered to be " One-Hit Wonders ." Just like many others, Murray Head had other successes beyond the monster hit song One Night in Bangkok from the Broadway show Chess . This is an earlier single from Murray Head that has been covered quite a bit, but I like the original; it's quite a well written track. Hear Say It Ain't So, Joe on YouTube. 4004. Rush - Something for Nothing

Image
From: 2112 ; Year: 1976; Genre: Hard Rock Bringing another album to a close today; with this pick I have chosen all the songs from Rush's 2112 . As I've said prior, I love their earlier material, combine that with the fact that you're lucky to find more than five songs on each of their 1970s records and it's not surprising that I'm running out of the earlier stuff. Anyway, this one's more of a straight-up rocker with a real hard edge. Hear Something for Nothing on YouTube. 3999. Cat Stevens - Wild World

Image
From: Tea for the Tillerman ; Year: 1970; Genre: Folk Rock I have absolutely no clue as to why I felt like picking a Cat Stevens' song today. I've never really been a fan of him or his original recordings, but I definitely admire his songwriting ability and usually like hearing other artists cover his songs. I'm not sure why I've never warmed up to his original material; I mean, there's a lot of music I like that many others despise, but ya know, different strokes for different folks. Anyway, I heard his music a lot whilst growing up; it was everywhere, and I mean everywhere, and there is something nostalgic about his original recordings I suppose. Hear Wild World on YouTube. Image

3997. ABBA - One of Us

Image
From: The Visitors ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock/Pop Off and on ever since I heard that they were getting back together and releasing a new song later this year I've had ABBA on my mind. 3995. Laura Branigan - Deep in the Dark

Image
From: Branigan 2 ; Year: 1983; Genre: Synthpop/New Wave I was playing around with some of Laura Branigan's music; I decided to choose another of her songs. This is a different one, it basically is Falco's massive hit Der Kommissar with totally different reworked lyrics. This is not to be confused with After the Fire's English version of Der Kommissar ; same music and arrangements, but completely different lyrics. I've always been a fan of Laura Branigan's vocals, and in this one she does not disappoint. Hear Deep in the Dark on YouTube. 3994. Fleetwood Mac - Station Man

Image
From: Kiln House ; Year: 1970; Genre: Blues Rock The other day I saw that early cornerstone of the band, guitarist/vocalist Danny Kirwan passed away. He was one of the pillars of the pre-Lindsay Buckingham/Stevie Nicks era when their music was a bit more blues oriented. Anyway, I thought I'd pick one where Mr. Kirwan provided lead vocals, and also from an album I had not yet chosen a song from. Hear Station Man on YouTube. Image
From: I Got a Name ; Year: 1973; Genre: Folk Rock Could not believe that I've not chosen this song yet; it's one of my absolute favourites from Jim Croce. 3992. Dave Edmunds - Girls Talk

Image
From: Repeat When Necessary ; Year: 1979; Genre: Pop/Rock Here's another one from "the dark recesses of my mind" so to speak; I'm considering doing a theme week on this idea, maybe. Anyway, this is a song originally penned by Elvis Costello but made famous by Dave Edmunds and the band he was part of called Rockpile, however was released as a solo record. 3991. Dr. Hook - Sharing the Night Together

Image
From: Pleasure & Pain ; Year: 1978; Genre: Soft Rock It's amazing how many songs drop from the dark recesses of your brain at times; ones you've not heard in ages. Most of the ones that fit that category for me are mostly songs from the mid-late '70s into the early '80s: when I was very young. They are mostly "Top 40" songs I heard from either the radio playing or someone was playing it. I'm not sure I'll ever run out of music from that time period, who knows, right? Anyway, whilst I've heard this song many times, up until just a bit ago, (when it popped into my mind), I did not even know who performed this song and was slightly surprised that it was Dr. Hook, but by the late '70s a lot of bands were getting into either hard punk or the softer rock sound if they were evolving musically. All in all it's actually a pretty good song in its own right, a perfect song to slow dance to and rub beltbuckles with that special someone in your

3990. Wild Turkey - A Universal Man

Image
From: Turkey ; Year: 1972; Genre: Hard Rock/Progressive Rock Over the past week the band Wild Turkey has been popping up off and on on my phone's playlist, so I figured I should take the hint and pick another one from the band. This one's got that great early 70's heavy edge with a lot of musicianship and technicality to boot. Hear A Universal Man on YouTube. 3989. Parliament - Gettin' to Know You

Image
From: The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk/Soul Time for another Funky Friday ; been meaning to pick one for a spell now and am finally getting around to it. 3988. The Alan Parsons Project - Silence and I

Image
From: Eye in the Sky ; Year: 1982; Genre: Progressive Rock/Symphonic Rock It's not true of me all the time, but as a rule if I'm sampling a record, (other than the hits or singles of course), I first go to the longest track and usually if I like it I'll like the other songs on the album. I feel that if an artist can go further than the standard less than 4 to 5 minutes and still keep it interesting then the rest of the music on the album is good as well; this is how it is with Eye in the Sky : after the title track I immediately went to this song and liked it, probably just as well as the main single. The multiple sections and use of both rock and orchestral instruments along with the amazing mournful vocals just makes just over 7 minutes of great music. Hear Silence and I on YouTube. 3987. Bay City Rollers - You Made Me Believe in Magic

Image
From: It's a Game ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock/Pop/Disco Don't really know why I'm picking this song or why it's stuck in my head; I think I must've heard it sometime recently. Been hearing more and more '70s pop since it's been featured in some of the Marvel super hero films, which is most likely why I'm hearing it more. Sure does bring back memories though; heard this music a lot growing up. Hear You Made Me Believe in Magic on YouTube. 3986. Tears for Fears - Broken

Image
From: Songs from the Big Chair ; Year: 1985; Genre: Rock/New Wave Felt like picking another one from Tears for Fears for some reason.... 3984. Crispian St. Peters - The Pied Piper

Image
From: Follow Me... ; Year: 1966; Genre: Pop/Rock I had this song on my mind when getting ready to make today's pick, so you already know wot that means. Not only is The Pied Piper catchy and very "ear worming," but also has a lot of good music being played and great vocals. Of course the tried-and-true method of launching into major chords in the chorus really makes it all that more catchy. Hear The Pied Piper on YouTube. From: American V: A Hundred Highways ; Year: 2006; Genre: Folk I've been playing this song a lot; in general, not Mr. Cash's version per se, but it lead to me finding his rendition of the song. Image
From: Africa (Single) ; Year: 2018; Genre: Rock/Pop I heard this cover of Toto's most famous hit the other day and loved what I was hearing.
