4102. Thin Lizzy - Cowboy Song

Image
From: Jailbreak ; Year: 1976; Genre: Hard Rock Thin Lizzy was one of bands that I started to like on my own accord, hearing them on the radio and such. Really stared getting into them after I bought and old 8-Track tape of this album; this is one of the songs I liked the most off of it. I really love the dynamics and the different sections of the song, it is very well constructed. Hear Cowboy Song on YouTube. 4101. Rush - Tai Shan

Image
From: Hold Your Fire ; Year: 1987; Genre: Rock/World Music This is very much an experimental track that really doesn't sound much like a Rush song, other than mayhap Mystic Rhythms to some modicum of a degree. I, personally like it, it's not my favourite Rush composition by any measure, but it's one I do like. Hear Tai Shan on YouTube. 4099. Ultravox - Lament

Image
From: Lament ; Year: 1984; Genre: New Wave I just felt like picking another song from Ultravox today. This song, which is obviously the title-track to their '84 album, reminds me a lot of Genesis/Phil Collins from the 1980s, but still it's own song. Hear Lament on YouTube. 4098. Morrissey - First of the Gang to Die

Image
From: You Are the Quarry ; Year: 2004; Genre: Alternative Rock Was recently introduced to this song and instantly liked it. 4097. Fleet Foxes - Mykonos

Image
From: Sun Giant ; Year: 2008; Genre: Indie Rock/Folk Rock Here's a rather pretty one from Fleet Foxes. As general rule I usually like the mixing of folk sounds with other forms of rock. This one's no different: a near perfect mix of rock and lighter folkish music. Hear Mykonos on YouTube. 4096. Jethro Tull - Just Trying to Be

Image
From: Living in the Past ; Year: 1972 (1970); Genre: Progressive Rock Another song got embedded in my head and won't go away, so I'm picking it. Just Trying to Be is one of the song by Jethro Tull that has the distinction of being able to "earworm" you quite hard. A lot of it is John Evans' counter-line he plays on the celesta opposite Ian Anderson on acoustic guitar and vocals. It's actually not a bad song all in all; kind of fun to hear every now and then. Hear Just Trying to Be on YouTube. My song pick 1 year ago today: Pitchshifter - Genius My song pick 2 years ago today: Styx - Born For Adventure My song pick 3 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Heavy Metals My song pick 4 years ago today: Yes - The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun) My song pick 5 years ago today: Yes - Perpetual Change My song pick 6 years ago today: Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Mephistopheles My song pick 7 years ago today: The Gentrys - Keep On Dancing My song pick

4095. Spock's Beard - All on a Sunday

Image
From: V ; Year: 2000; Genre: Progressive Rock I've been at this for over a decade and 4000+ songs picked and have not picked one from the prog favourite Spock's Beard; I'll remedy that today. A very aptly titled song for today, which is a Sunday. Hear All on a Sunday on YouTube. 4094. Porcupine Tree - Hatesong

4093. Curved Air - Elfin Boy

Image
From: Air Cut ; Year: 1973; Genre: Folk Rock/Progressive Rock This is a rather pretty track that features Sonja Kristina's beautiful vocals and Eddie Jobson's work on synth, harpsichord, organ, and anything else with a keyboard or so it would seem. Hear Elfin Boy on YouTube. My song pick 1 year ago today: Gloryhammer - Goblin King of the Darkstorm Galaxy My song pick 2 years ago today: Russkaja - Energia! 4092. Klaatu - Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft

Image
From: 3:14 EST ; Year: 1976; Genre: Space Rock/Progressive Rock For the last couple of days I've had this song on my mind. It's funny because I had not heard it in at least 30 some years, or so it would seem. Anyway, this one has very much a Beatlesque sound to it; you can tell they were at least a large influence. There's a noted theatrical feel to it with a lot of great instrumentation. Hear Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft on YouTube. 4091. Van Morrison - Wild Nights

Image
From: Tupelo Honey ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock It's been a while since the last time I chose a song from Van Morrison. I've always been a fan of his music in some degree, so it's a bit odd that I haven't revisited his music for some time now. The only reason I can think of is/was that back some 5-10 years ago, if memory serves me correctly, him and his record company were being rather heavy-handed with streaming services and thus much of his music was not online and due to that I did not pick any of his songs. Anyway, this is one that's always been a favourite with most crowds; I remember when I used to play in a cover band no matter the audience people danced to this song. Hear Wild Nights on YouTube. 4090. Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer

Image
From: Bridge Over Troubled Water ; Year: 1970; Genre: Folk Rock Caught myself singing along to this song running through my mind as I was working yesterday. There's just something about their music, especially from this album and song in particular. I love the way this one was written and arranged musically with the quiet and mellow verses and the more bombastic choruses. Hear The Boxer on YouTube. 4088. Jefferson Starship - No Way Out

Image
From: Nuclear Furniture ; Year: 1984; Genre: Rock Wanted to lose myself in some mid-80s music; hadn't picked a song from Jefferson Airplane/Starship in a while, so it seemed like a good fit. From: The Yumyum Tree ; Year: 2009; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Progressive Rock I had some of their music come on whilst driving the other day; I've been meaning to pick another one ever since. 4085. America - Watership Down

Image
From: Hideaway ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Pop I'm not sure if this one was intended to be part of the animated film released a year or so later, but I cannot help but think there's a connection. However, by itself it's a great song that has both rock and soft areas as well as some orchestral sections, which I think adds a lot. Hear Watership Down on YouTube. 4084. Mr. Big - 1992

4082. Blue Öyster Cult - Tattoo Vampire

Image
From: Agents of Fortune ; Year: 1976; Genre: Hard Rock/Punk Tattoo Vampire is one of the many songs on Agents of Fortune that I'd let it play through on my old 8-Track. That's one thing missing from music today is "Album Oriented Rock;" you just drop the needle and let it play without skipping a song. Hear Tattoo Vampire on YouTube. 4081. Asia - Daylight

Image
From: Alpha ; Year: 1983; Genre: Progressive Rock Been a busy day thus far and music from the band Asia has been on my mind for some of the time today. Daylight was originally a bonus track on certain varieties of the album, but can be found most of the time on newer releases. 4080. Jerry Reed - The Bandit

Image
From: Smokey and the Bandit (soundtrack) ; Year: 1977; Genre: Country As many probably already know, Hollywood legend Burt Reynolds passed away a couple days ago. From: Rough Riders ; Year: 1979; Genre: Funk/Soul Thought it would be a good day for a Funky Friday and some real boogieing music. 4078. Fleetwood Mac - Second Hand News

Image
From: Rumours ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock/Pop This is a pick I've been wanting to make off and on for some time now, but kept on forgetting it for whatever reason. 4077. Manic Street Preachers - Theme from M.A.S.H. (Suicide Is Painless)

Image
From: Theme from M.A.S.H. (Suicide Is Painless) (single); Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Rock The very second I beheld my pick number, 4077, which is the number of the M.A.S.H. unit in the television show , I knew I had to pick something related. Many children growing up in the early 1980s should have quite a few memories of the show and its endless reruns that you can still find playing on the television. Anyway, since I'd already chosen the original theme song many, many moons ago I was stuck with a conundrum. However, I happened upon this actually pretty good cover version by the Welsh group Manic Street Preachers; I have to say, I like it quite a lot. Hear Theme from M.A.S.H. Image
From: Keep The Faith ; Tear: 1992; Genre; Hard Rock I was drawing a serious blank today, so I decided to "spin" my playlist and it ended up with a song from Bon Jovi's Keep The Faith album, so I'm blogging about one of the songs from it today. This has always been one of my favourites on the record; it's one of the heavier songs with a lot of good music throughout. Hear If I Was Your Mother on YouTube. 4075. Marillion - Lavender

Image
From: Misplaced Childhood ; Year: 1985; Genre: Progressive Rock While on the road yesterday I was listening to a bit of Marillion; it's been in my mind since, so I'm picking one. Misplaced Childhood is probably my third favourite of their albums after Clutching at Straws and Script for a Jester's Tear ; there's a lot of good music to be had on this record. Lavender was apparently one of the band's biggest hits and I will say it's a bit more consumable to a casual listener than most of their music. Hear Lavender on YouTube.
