6308. Blood, Sweat & Tears - God Bless the Child

Image
From: Blood, Sweat & Tears ; Year: 1968; Genre: Blues Rock/Jazz Fusion I remember growing up hearing this one a lot; I really believe that it was my Dad's favourite from the band, which he liked quite well. I guess for me you can call it, as Max, who used to have a blog like mine, referred to a "dad music," i.e. music your dad liked and got you into. This one's actually a cover originally written and recorded by the legend that was Billie Holiday . She wrote this soulful bluesy lament about the inadequacies and how those born to wealth have a much easier time whilst those born, (by accident of birth), into poverty have life the hardest. More or less calling out the " Pie in the Sky " belief system of the time that has more or less continued to the day, at least in this nation.  Anyway, BS&T really play the heck out of this one with all the soul and energy it is due.   Hear God Bless the Child on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Nena - ...

5708. Blood, Sweat & Tears - I Can't Quit Her

Image
From: Child is Father to the Man ; Year: 1968; Genre: Jazz Rock I finally got around to listening to Blood, Sweat & Tears' debut album, which was prior to David Clayton-Thomas joining and instead features legendary keyboardist/musician/singer Al Kooper, who has basically performed session work for countless artists, as the bandleader; he would leave before the second album was recorded. As you could easily surmise with the sheer amount of musicianship present, this song is purely amazing to hear with so many great layers, but is still very digestible to even pop aficionados.   Hear I Can't Quit Her on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Napoleon XIV - Marching Off To Bedlam   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Beatles - Within You Without You   My song pick 3 years ago today: Savatage - Labyrinths   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - To Cry You a Song My song pick 5 years ago today: Gentle Giant - All Through the Night My...

From: Blood, Sweat & Tears ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock/Jazz Fusion I was thinking about picking another Blood, Sweat & Tears song for a little while now and today seems like a good day. 3255. Blood, Sweat & Tears - And When I Die

Image
From: Blood, Sweat & Tears ; Year: 1968; Genre: Blues Rock/Jazz Fusion After hearing some of their music the other day and subsequently having it stuck in my mind I once again I was surprised that I had found another band I liked that I had not picked a song from. Anyway, this one is a bit schizophrenic in construction, but in an interesting and wonderful way. The slow and loping bluesy verses, which launchs into a jazzy gospelesque pre-chorus and continues into the chorus where it comes to a climax and abruptly starts over. Hear And When I Die on YouTube.
