6161. Finntroll - Ett folk förbannat

Image
From: Blodsvept ; Year: 2013; Genre: Black Metal/Folk Metal I have not really listened to Finntroll in some time, so I decided that I would. Every now and then their music just seems absolutely perfect; today is one of those times I suppose. From wot I can understand, this one seems to be about cursed people who turn into flesh-eating beasts at night and back to human, (or something of the sort), during the day. As always, their music is truly something to behold, and I am glad to see that they have not lost a step.   Hear Ett folk förbannat on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Dance, Dance, Dance   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Offspring - Bad Habit   My song pick 3 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Antarctica   My song pick 4 years ago today: Steely Dan - Black Cow   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Moody Blues - Stop! Image
From: Kindred Spirits ; Year: 2012; Genre: Celtic Folk Metal Kind of odd of me to be picking this song this time of year being that Beltaine is a late spring event, but it just felt like a great song for today. 2088 Finntroll - Ett Norrskensdåd

Image
From: Nifelvind ; Year: 2011; Genre: Folk Metal/Black Metal Was thinking about Finntroll this morning, and I realized that I hadn't picked a song of theirs in a while, so I am today. This is a rather interesting song; a perfect mix of old world folk and blistering extreme metal. That simple melody being played throughout this track makes for one awesome hook. Here is a video clip with Ett Norrskensdåd on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV Anh. 117a, 117b - Polonause in F Major (from Anna Magdalena Notebook II ) My song pick two years ago today: Exist†Trace - Requiem My song pick three years ago today: Meat Loaf - Two out of Three Ain't Bad My song pick four years ago today: Christian Pezold - BWV Anh. 115 - Minuet in G Minor (Anna Magdalena Notebook II) My song pick five years ago today: Raymond Scott - Powerhouse

1874 Waylander - Echoes of the Sidhe

Image
From: Kindred Spirits ; Year: 2012; Genre: Celtic Folk Metal Yay! I happened to be looking at what Waylander has been up to; lo and behold they just released a brand new album! To say the least I'm having a real blast. Damn, there has been a massive amount of records being released my favourite bands all year long; I'm really having trouble keeping up anymore, but it's better than having no new music to listen to I'll tell ya! Anyway, to be truthful this was actually the first song I heard off of Kindred Spirits and I immediately loved it; I'll undoubtedly be posting more from the album in the future. Hear Echoes of the Sidhe on YouTube. 1054 Cruachan - The Gael

Image
1054 Cruachan - The Gael I thought for sure that I added at least one of this great Irish Celtic Metal band's songs to my list, but I guess haven't. For those unaware of this band or the Celtic Metal genre, Celtic Metal is a sub-genre of Folk Metal, which in itself is a sub-genre of Black Metal. Cruachan fuses Metal sounds with traditional Irish Folk music stylings; and thus you get what has been referred to as Celtic Metal. The band's name, Cruachan, is pronounced Kroo-ah-Kahn; evidently this is the name of an important ancient archaeological site in County Roscommon, Ireland, from which the band took its name. Anyway, this is a very dynamic song, which starts out very light with a clean guitar and vocals. It builds with the rhythm section kicking in and becoming progressively fuller, then comes in the Irish Folks music as an interlude; the entire band then kicks in with full Celtic Folk Metal sound. Here is the studio version on YouTube. My song pick a year ...

848 ( Finntroll - Jaktens Tid )

Image
848 ( Finntroll - Jaktens Tid ) I noticed that I have not added this one to my list yet, so I will remedy that with today's pick; plus, I have also felt like listening to some Finntroll for a bit now. As with many of their Humppa influenced tracks, this one is very danceable. It features Jonne Järvelä Joik , or ( Yoik ) singing, which adds another incredible aspect to the song as well. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is a live performance on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Band of Horses - St. Augustine My song pick two years ago today: Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the Band +

797 ( Finntroll - Skogens Hämnd )

Image
797 ( Finntroll - Skogens Hämnd ) Time for some more Finntroll! This song has become one of my favored from the band, mostly due to the way that the song was arranged musically. I love how they go from the more melodic Hummpa influenced Metal to the very heavy thrashing sound and mix them excellently. Just by the name of song, Skogens Hämnd : "Revenge of the Forest" you can easily get an idea what the song is about without having to speak/understand Old Swedish. Here is a recording of the song on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: #425 Bon Jovi - These Days My song pick two years ago today: #57 Yes - Roundabout +

755 ( Finntroll - Trollhammeren )

Image
755 ( Finntroll - Trollhammeren ) For some reason I have been listening to a lot of European Metal the last little bit, and I decided on choosing a song from a band I have been listening to. For those do not know about them, Finntroll is a Metal band from Finland. I love how they mix the Progressive Folk with the Black Metal to make a very unique sound. Here is the music video on YouTube. Here is a live performance circa '06 on YouTube. It just does not sound right without Tapio Wilska. My song pick a year ago today: Pink Floyd - Learning to Fly My song pick two years ago today: Fire Bomber (Humming Bird) - Remember 16 +
