William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: Grand Illusion ; Year: 2006; Genre: Power Metal Felt like listening to some European power metal today from one of my favourite bands of that genre. From: Tales of Mystery and Imagination ; Year: 1997; Genre: Power Metal I love the bluesy influences throughout this track and the loping rhythm; it gives it a great sound. The guitar playing through the solos is amazing as well as in the rest of the song. It's definitely among my favourites from the band.   Hear Warrior's Return on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Dio - Hungry For Heaven   My song pick 2 years ago today: Argent - Pure Love My song pick 3 years ago today: Boz Scaggs - Breakdown Dead Ahead My song pick 4 years ago today: Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction My song pick 5 years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Love is Blue My song pick 6 years ago today: B. From: Tales of Mystery and Imagination ; Year: 1997; Genre: Power Metal I had this song on my mind this morning, so, as I always do, I took it as a sign that I was to pick it. Anyway, much to the dismay to others it's written very similar to Johann Pachelbel's Cannon in D-Minor. For the first 1:20 or so it plays the melody in a classical chamber music style and then kicks in for with the full band. I absolutely love this one; it's fun to listen to and the different ways they play that melody within the context of the song. Hear Ring of Steel on YouTube. From: Tales of Mystery and Imagination ; Year: 1997; Genre: Power Metal I've been getting more and more into this amazing Swedish metal band ever since discovering them a couple of years ago. I was listening to this album for the first time the other day and this was one of the songs that caught me attention upon the first ten seconds or so into it. This track in particular reminds me a bit of Blue Öyster Cult with a noted Iron Maiden influence thrown in. It's an excellent track off of an album that is quickly becoming on of my favourites from the band. Hear Test of Time on YouTube. From: Grand Illusion ; Year: 2005; Genre: Power Metal I was listening to Nocturnal Rites last night and it seemed like an excellent time to pick another one of their songs today. As with much of the material from the '05 Grand Illusion album, this is a rather empowering track with a lot of energy and superb musicianship; one of my favourites. Hear End of our Rope on YouTube. From: Grand Illusion , Year: 2005, Genre: Power Metal The other day I was doing a litlle research on Styx's album The Grand Illusion and I happened upon this similarly titled album from the Swedish power metal band Nocturnal Rites . Upon listening to the band's material I immediately fell in love with the sound; I really don't know what it is with me and European power metal, but I like a lot of it. Oi; I have yet another band to collect the albums from. Anyway, I chose Fooling Yourself from Styx's The Grand Illusion three years ago for my April Fools Day pick and when I discovered they had an aptly named track as well I just had to make it my pick today. This is an awesome track in many ways; I especially like Jonny Lindkvist amazing vocals and the guitar work of Nils Norberg. Here is the music video on YouTube.
