3573. Midnight Oil - Warakurna

Image
From: Diesel and Dust ; Year: 1987; Genre: Alternative Rock I had some of the 'Oils on my mind today; one of my favourite bands I think I've mentioned before, thought I'd pick another one from them. 3572. Stuart Hamm - Radio Free Albemuth

Image
From: Radio Free Albemuth ; Year: 1988; Genre: Progressive Rock/Jazz Fusion As odd happenstance would have it I was already going to pick this song, which features both Joe Satriani and Allan Holdsworth on guitar only to find out that the legendary guitarist Holdsworth passed away a few days ago... dang; he was a major musician who played all over the place and influenced many guitarists. Even if you do not know of him by name there's a pretty good chance you've heard him play at one time or another. Anywho, about the song: Radio Free Albemuth changes up grooves and time signatures throughout with contrasting and well-defined sections that are expertly pieced together with amazing musical mastery throughout. Hear Radio Free Albemuth on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Central Line - Walking Into Sunshine My song pick two years ago today: Zakk Wylde - Way Beyond Empty My song pick three years ago today: XTC - Travels in Nihilon My song pick four year

3571. Rose Royce - Car Wash

Image
From: Car Wash ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk/Soul/Disco If my numbers are correct this is my 190th consecutive Funky Friday pick; almost to 200. Anyway, last night I had another Rose Royce track come on my phone and I enjoyed it so much that I felt like picking another one of their songs today. As you probably already know, this thumping disco/funk song is the title track from the classic film Car Wash 's soundtrack and was also the band's debut album; and wot a way to debut. I'd hazard to guess that most everybody alive has heard Car Wash or at least parts of it at some time. Hear Car Wash on YouTube. Image
From: Example ; Year: 1995; Genre: Alternative Rock For Squirrels is a band that I haven't thought of in a while; I guess it's kind of a rediscovery of sorts. 3566. Hot Butter - Telstar

Image
From: Popcorn ; Year: 1972; Genre: Electronic Rock Whilst the original Tornadoes version was featured a lot of electronic sounds, this interesting cover really takes it to the next level with a wall of synth. A total joy to listen to if you are a fan of big synth and electronic pop. Hear Hot Butter's version of Telstar on YouTube. 3565. Queen - Keep Yourself Alive

Image
From: Queen ; Year: 1974; Genre: Hard Rock Since yesterday I had this entire album on my mind. I might've said this before, but it's astounding to think this was a band's debut album with the material, the arranging, and the production value. Anyway, this is probably one of the most popular songs from the record and is an exposé of Brian May's musicianship on the guitar as well as Freddy's vocals. Hear Keep Yourself Alive on YouTube. 3564. The Headhunters - Actual Proof

Image
From: Thrust ; Year: 1974; Genre: Funk/Jazz Fusion I love to revisit Herbie Hancock's Headhunters' records; perfect for this Funky Friday pick. This is a great 9-plus minute musical journey of epic proportions. Really though, if you think about it this album only has 4 songs on it and not one song less than 7 minutes in length. About the only genre outside of progressive rock/metal to make such large and interesting pieces of music. Hear Actual Proof on YouTube. Image
From: A ; Year: 1980; Genre: Folk Rock/Hard Rock Feeling really sick today, so I'm making a quick pick. 3559. The Charlie Daniels Band - Long Haired Country Boy

Image
From: Fire On The Mountain ; Year: 1974; Genre: Country After yesterday's pick I decided to go back deep into my queue of songs and see what I missed. This is one I thought for sure I'd picked it, but I guess I was in error. 3558. Fletcher Henderson and Louis Armstrong - Money Blues

Image
From: Timeless Historical Presents Fletcher Henderson and Louis Armstrong 1924-1925 ; Year: 1924/25; Genre: New Orleans Jazz/Dixieland Back some six years ago or so I was really wanting to pick this song, but could never find it on YouTube or another streaming service, so I just made a note of it in my queue of unpicked songs and checked every now and then for it, but eventually gave up. Today, on a lark I decided to check, and sure enough, not only was it there, but from an official source too. It's amazing how much things have changed with music and YouTube since I first started this blog over nine years ago. Because companies and artists would take down and go after people the choices I could make back then were very restricted, but now... it's really night and day difference. Anyway, this is one of those feel good pieces of jazz you'd expect to hear playing behind an old silent film or during a Vaudeville act. Of course hearing Pops in his earlier years is a treat

3557. Kool & The Gang - Jungle Boogie

Image
From: Wild and Peaceful ; Year: 1973; Genre: Funk These Funky Fridays are coming faster at me, or at least it seems that way for me. 3556. Pallas - Falling Down

Image
From: XXV ; Year: 2011; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock Both a busy day and not feeling well, which is not a good combination when looking for inspiration for a song to pick. So, I went to one of my "go to bands" and chose this, the opening track to their 2011 XXV album. To my ear it is almost like a mix between one of Dream Theater's more recent tracks and late '80s Rush... maybe I'm just crazy. But whatever the case I love the hard, progressive rock goodness throughout this one. Hear Falling Down on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Gordon Lightfoot - Carefree Highway My song pick two years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Whiskey Man My song pick three years ago today: Alphaville - Forever Young My song pick four years ago today: Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls My song pick five years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) My song pick six years ago today: Iron Maiden - Flight of Icarus

3554. Steely Dan - Don't Take Me Alive

Image
From: The Royal Scam ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Jazz Fusion Today is one of those days that seem to be happening a lot lately where I binge on an album and pick a song from it. 3553. Al Di Meola - The Wizard

Image
From: Land of the Midnight Sun ; Year: 1976; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Rock I've been meaning to pick one from Al Di Meola lately; finally getting around to it. This is more or less an exposition of his and his guest musicians' prowess, but is still very listenable to those who want to rock out. The Wizard is one of the more hard rock based instrumentals on the album with a good dose of jazz in there for good measure. Hear The Wizard on YouTube. Image
From: An Innocent Man ; Year: 1983; Genre: Rock/Pop The other day my wife was listening to one of her cell phone radio stations and this track came on; it's been with me ever since. Uptown Girl is another one of those songs that is both extremely catchy and very interesting musically. From wot I understand, Billy Joel wanted to make this song in the style of The Four Seasons , which he did pretty good in that endeavour. Hear Uptown Girl on YouTube. 3551. Alice in Chains - Dirt

Image
From: Dirt ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge I noted over the last few weeks that songs from Alice in Chains' Dirt album have been playing a lot on my phone's playlist, so I thought I should pick one, and wot better one than the title track. 3549. Carmen - Dedicated to Lydia

Image
From: The Gypsies ; Year: 1975; Genre: Progressive Rock/Flamenco Rock Sadly, I will not be able to pick another song from this album again unless I start picking songs already on chosen, which probably won't happen. I cannot believe that I've picked every other song off Carmen's The Gypsies album; it is one of my favourites, so yeah. At least they have two other records to pick from. Anyway, this one has a beautifully contrasting sounds between the great acoustic flamenco picking and heavy bass/beat. Hear Dedicated to Lydia on YouTube. 3547. The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty in Pink

Image
From: Talk Talk Talk ; Year: 1981; Genre: New Wave/Pop I was a victim of an earworming or so it would seem; I like the song, which brings back a lot of great memories, so it's not bad. It's hard for me to believe that The Psychedelic Furs did this song over 35 years ago; it just can't be.
