From: Starless and Bible Black ; Year: 1974; Genre: Progressive Rock One of my favourite tracks from Starless and Bible Black , which, once more, I erroneously believed I had already chosen. As you could, or mayhap could not surmise, is a song referencing Satan himself and those, (like in organized religion), listen to him, his lies and deceptions. Although I believe that many in positions of power willfully follow or give blame to some supernatural force, when, in fact, they are the ones perpetrating said deceptions without any input from such a being. From: Larks' Tongues in Aspic ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock Was listening to a bunch of music from, I guess you could call it the " John Wetton " era of the band; Larks' Tongues in Aspic was, of course, his first record as a member of King Crimson playing primarily bass and lead vocals. This is kind of an odd instrumental piece with some interesting characteristics, chiefly being how it starts out very quiet and gets very loud as the song progresses. From: Discipline ; Year: 1981; Genre: Progressive Rock Whilst I absolutely love its predecessors Red and Starless and Bible Black , which are my two favourites from King Crimson, I have to say that Discipline was kind of a "breath of fresh air" so to speak in my subjective opinion, with all new musical ideas and sounds as well as differing approaches to said music. The addition of both Andrew Belew and Tony Levin and their musical influences made it sound very unique and new. The Sheltering Sky is an ethereal piece that relies a lot on the rhythm and music underneath, which makes an excellent base for the synth effect-driven guitar lead and other rhythm above. Epitaph is one of my absolute favourites from King Crimson; it's such a beautiful song in many ways with so many emotions within. From: THRAK ; Year: 1995; Genre: Progressive Rock Listening to some somewhat later material from King Crimson today; definitely picking one of the songs I was listening to in particular. I love how Fripp and company didn't really try to reinvent themselves and be something they're not, unlike many of the progressive rock granddaddies did back in the 1990s. The only thing different about this track in particular is that it does have a bit of an Alice 'N Chains/Soundgardebesque groove to it; but that's mostly coming from Tony Levin's monstrous bass playing. It can also be argued that they influenced a lot of "Grunge" musicians with their earlier work, the Red album in particular, so it could be very much the other way around I guess; who knows.
