3235. Bon Jovi - Dry County

Image
From: Keep the Faith ; Year: 1992; Genre: Hard Rock Last night while driving home a bunch of Bon Jovi's music came on my iPod. I haven't picked one of their tracks in a while, so I thought I would go ahead and pick one of my absolute favourites from the band. This is probably their most epic magnum opus featuring not only a great, heavy, heartfelt piece of music, but then you get a guitar clinic being put on by Mr. Richie Sambora; pure musical bliss. The song clocks in at just under 10 minutes; basically this song and album is signaling them leaving their spandexy (is that even a real word?) 1980s Glam/Metal image. Hear Dry County on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Soundgarden - Storm My song pick two years ago today: Megadeth - Go To Hell My song pick three years ago today: The Scorpions - Loving You Sunday Morning My song pick four years ago today: Paul Mauriat - L'amour est bleu "Love is Blue" My song pick five years ago today: Bl

3234. Grateful Dead - Dark Star

Image
From: Dark Star/Born Crosseyed (single) ; Year: 1968; Genre: Psychedelic Rock Happy Memorial Day ! As normal I'm keeping up with my tradition of picking a song from The 'Dead for the occasion. This is a really early single from the band and definitely a treat for anyone who likes hearing their very young and raw sound. Hear Dark Star on YouTube. Hear an extended live "jam" version on YouTube. 3233. Ronnie Milsap - Daydreams About Night Things

Image
From: Night Things ; Year: 1975; Genre: Country I have no idea why I'm picking this one other than the fact it was running through my mind at the time I'm making this post. It's not a bad song or anything like that; it's kinda sappy and light hearted, but we all need some of it from time to time. Boy, I heard this song a lot growing up and into adolescence; probably why it got stuck in my mind. Hear Daydreams About Night Things on YouTube. 3232. Savatage - Prelude to Madness

Image
From: Hall of the Mountain King ; Year: 1987; Genre: Progressive Metal Had Savatage on the brain last night and thought it would be a great idea to pick one. This instrumental is essentially used as the overture to the title track. They do their own metal rendition of parts of Gustav Holst's Mars, the Bringer of War at the beginning and finishes with the melody of Edvard Grieg's theme to In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt . Hear Prelude to Madness on YouTube. 3231. Sly & The Family Stone - Luv n' Haight

Image
From: There's a Riot Going On ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Soul Getting my Funky Friday pick in and continuing my streak of consecutive picks. Every time I hear Sly and the Family Stone it brings a smile to my face. If this funky soul does not get you moving and get you in a great mood nothing will. Hear Luv n' Haight on YouTube. 3230. Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Still the Same

Image
From: Stranger in Town ; Year: 1978; Genre: Rock It's a busy day and I'm making a quick pick. Still the Same is one of many that I love from Bob Seger and his band of renown; simply a great song. Hear a live version of Still the Same on YouTube. 3229. ABBA - Two for the Price of One

Image
From: The Visitors ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock/Pop This is another one that is not what you would expect from the band and genre of the song. As with most of The Visitors album, the music and arrangements are much more interesting and complex. Two for the Price of One borders on a mini opera in its construction with sections that are quite different one another; it's a neat little tune wrapped up in a very interesting package. Hear Two for the Price of One on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Grateful Dead - Dire Wolf My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Queen and Country My song pick three years ago today: Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne My song pick four years ago today: Steppenwolf - Monster/Suicide/America My song pick five years ago today: Max Roach - Valse Hot My song pick six years ago today: Nightwish - Amaranth My song pick seven years ago today: The Grateful Dead - Alabama Getway My song pick eight years ago today: Bob Seger -

3228. Steve Vai - You Didn't Break It

Image
From: Flex-Able Leftovers ; Year: 1998; Genre: Hard Rock Last night some of Steve Vai's music was on my mind; specifically songs from his Flex-Able Leftovers album. Judging by the sound I would venture to say that this rather catchy and mainstream sounding track was done in the mid 1980s. Kind of out of the ordinary for something from Mr. Vai, but still quite listenable and fun to the ear. Hear You Didn't Break It on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: UB40 - Kingston Town My song pick two years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - The Ghost My song pick three years ago today: Blondie - Dreaming My song pick four years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 244 - St. Matthew Passion My song pick five years ago today: UB40 - Tears From My Eyes My song pick six years ago today: Jethro Tull - 10.08 to Paddington My song pick seven years ago today: Jethro Tull - Mayhem, Maybe My song pick eight years ago today: The Kinks - Dedicated Follower of Fashion

3227. Megadeth - A Secret Place

Image
From: Cryptic Writings ; Year: 1997; Genre: Metal Dang... another one of my favourite musicians passed away this weekend and it was one that I liked a lot: Nick Mensa . Another one dying far too young; it's just so sad on many levels. Anyway, I thought I should pick a song he played on that I liked a lot; this is probably my favourite track from Cryptic Writings , which was the last studio record with Megadeth he performed on. Quite a heavy and dark track, but very beautiful at the same time. Hear A Secret Place on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Wings - Live and Let Die My song pick two years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Are You Happy? My song pick three years ago today: Stone Temple Pilots - Creep My song pick four years ago today: The Moog Cookbook - Come Out and Play My song pick five years ago today: Hurricane Smith - Oh Babe, What Would You Say? 3226. Queensrÿche - If I Could Change it All

Image
From: Operation: Mindcrime II ; Year: 2006; Genre: Progressive Metal Been meaning to pick a song from 'Mindcrime II for well over a week now; I finally don't have another track coming to mind to get in the way, or so it would seem. Anyway, this one comes later within the story in the concept album and is very much heavier lyrically and emotionally with some great music as you'd expect from Queensrÿche. Hear If I Could Change it All on YouTube. 3225. Iain Matthews - Shake It

Image
From: Stealin' Home ; Year: 1978; Genre: Rock/Pop/Soft Rock I happened to hear this somewhat dated late '70s pop/rock classic this morning and I knew I had today's pick. Boy, this one brings back a lot of memories; I had not heard it in some time, but a lot when I was younger. Even though it's a mainstream pop track there's a lot of great music to be heard throughout it. I especially love the saxophone and the bass line. Hear Shake It on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Kinks - Moving Pictures My song pick two years ago today: Stahlhammer - Fiend Hört Mit My song pick three years ago today: The Doors - Soul Kitchen My song pick four years ago today: Megaherz - Hurra – Wir Leben Noch My song pick five years ago today: Skid Row - Youth Gone Wild My song pick six years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - The Bertha Butt Boogie My song pick seven years ago today: Steely Dan - Hey Nineteen My song pick eight years ago today: Rahsaan

3224. Bootsy's Rubber Band - Vanish In Our Sleep

Image
From: Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk/Soul Whilst this counts as my 141st consecutive Funky Friday pick, it's the first one in my new house and I wanted a perfect song for the occasion. Who better than the incomparable Bootsy Collins and his band for the pick, right? Anyway, this soulful and powerful funk track is the closing track to the band's first album; it's a perfect "cooldown" for such a fun thumping and bumping album. Hear Vanish In Our Sleep on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Who - Another Tricky Day My song pick two years ago today: Rush - Beneath, Between & Behind My song pick three years ago today: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Last of a Dyin' Breed My song pick four years ago today: Rush - Subdivisions My song pick five years ago today: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - K. 525, Serenade No. 13 for Strings in G major " Eine Kleine Nachtmusik " My song pick six years ago today: F

3223. Eric Burdon & The Animals - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

Image
From: Animal Tracks ; Year: 1965; Genre: Blues Rock I had this song, which is amongst my favourites from Eric Burdon & The Animals, on my mind last night, so, yeah, like always, I'm picking it. Whilst this was a huge hit for The Animals, it was originally a wonderful piece of bluesy jazz performed by Nina Simone, which can be found here on YouTube . But when Eric Burdon and company got ahold of it they altered all but essentially the lyrics and making it their own. Personally, I love both pieces in their own way, but it's hard not to think of that organ and guitar lick when you think of this song, however, the powerful, deep, and heartfelt lyrics and their delivery are really the driving force for me. Hear Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Who - 905 My song pick two years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You My song pick three years ago today: Rush - 2112 My song pick fou

3222. Don Henley - Sunset Grill

Image
From: Building the Perfect Beast ; Year: 1984; Genre: Rock For some odd reason I had a load of Don Henley's music on my mind today; thought, as usual, would pick one. To me it's always been interesting how so many sounds and different instruments blend throughout the song; particularly the synthesizers and the fretless bass guitar; without a doubt Sunset Grill has a large sound. There's a definite and odd feeling you get, (or at least I personally get), from listening this track; it's difficult to explain. Not nostalgia, introspection, or anything meta-cognitive, but it is interesting nevertheless. Hear Sunset Grill on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Bad Company - No Smoke Without a Fire My song pick two years ago today: Freddy Taylor and His Swing Men from Harlem - Viper's Dream My song pick three years ago today: Mr. Big - Tempermental My song pick four years ago today: Heart - Crazy on You My song pick five years ago today: Billy

Image
From: New World Messiah ; Year: 2004; Genre: Power Metal I felt like listening to some uplifting power metal today and looked no further than one of my favourite bands in the genre: Nocturnal Rites and this, one of the song I like the most from their New World Messiah album. 3220. Santo & Johnny - Love is Blue

Image
From: Love is Blue ; Year: 1978; Genre: Jazz/Pop Busy with getting settled into our new house and have been tired, but as luck would have it I had Santo & Johnny's music on my mind to help me through the unpacking. Anyway, this is an amazing cover of André Charles Jean Popp and Pierre Cour's hit piece of music that has been made famous by a few acts, most notably Vicky Leandros and Paul Mauriat. I especially adore the expressiveness and emotion that Santo Farina puts into the playing of the Hawaiian steel guitar. Hear Love is Blue on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: B. B. Image
From: In the Court of the Crimson King ; Year: 1969; Genre: Progressive Rock Been meaning to pick another one from King Crimson for a while now, and I'm finally getting around to it. 3218. Band of Horses - Casual Party

Image
From: Why Are You OK ; Year: 2016: Genre: Indie Rock Today I happened to hear this single off of Band of Horses' yet-to-be-released album Why Are You OK and thought I would go ahead pick it. It's kind of nice to hear this band get back to their sound I liked to begin with; a lot better lead single than their last couple albums produced in my opinion. Hear Casual Party on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Bachman & Turner - Neutral Zone My song pick two years ago today: Xerath - The Glorious Death My song pick three years ago today: John Fogerty - Premonition My song pick four years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - The Joker My song pick five years ago today: Elvenking - The Wanderer My song pick six years ago today: Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street My song pick seven years ago today: Scorpions - Rhythm of Love My song pick eight years ago today: Supertramp - Bloody Well Right

Image

3216. Asia - One Step Closer

Image
From: Asia ; Year: 1982; Genre: Progressive Rock It has been a fun and busy week, for some reason music from the fantastic supergroup Asia fit very well. While not the best or even close to the best song on the album, this is still a good one, especially when listening to the entire record in one go. Hear One Step Closer on YouTube. 3215. Genesis - Silent Sun

Image
From: From Genesis to Revelation ; Year: 1969; Genre: Rock/Pop/Folk Rock It's always fun to hear earlier works from bands whose sound ended up quite different. All in all though this piece of "Baroque Pop" is quite musically interesting with all the string arrangements and such; a good piece of the pop oriented fan as well as a connoisseur of music. Hear Silent Sun on YouTube. 3213-14. Boston - The Journey/It's Easy

Image
From: Don't Look Back ; Year: 1978; Genre: Hard Rock Time for a great rocker on this busy week; I thought immediately of something from Boston' epic Don't Look Back album. The short, but ever so neat instrumental piece, The Journey , is often paired up as an intro with the following track, It's Easy , so I thought I would follow suit. Both of these are the typical highly produced sound and style you'd expect from Boston. Hear The Journey/It's Easy on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Carmen - Shady Lady My song pick two years ago today: Nightwish - Nymphomaniac Fantasia My song pick three years ago today: The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter My song pick four years ago today: The Who - My Wife My song pick five years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge My song pick six years ago today: Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives My song pick seven years ago today: Megadeth - À Tout le Monde My song pick eight years

3211. Lawrence Gowan - (You're a) Strange Animal

Image
From: Strange Animal ; Year: 1985; Genre: Rock The other day a friend sent me this track to listen to; to say the least I can say that I really like it. It has a great and somewhat catchy melody with some great music all around it; of course having Tony Levin's bass playing and Jerry Marotta on drum will almost always ensure that it's an awesome song. Hear (You're a) Strange Animal on YouTube. 3210. Mr. Bungle - Carousel

Image
From: Mr. Bungle ; Year: 1991; Genre: Alternative Metal/Ska After seeing and hearing some of Mr. Bungle's material on television the other night it brought the band back into my conscious memory so to speak. One of the bands that, if I remember correctly, showed up a lot on Max's old Song a Day blog that caught my attention; I've always been meaning to pick one from Mr. Bungle, but never got around to it, but I'm rectifying that today. I love how many different sounds and musical ideas went into this song and blended absolutely perfectly. Hear Carousel on YouTube. Image
From: The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk/Soul Needed some Parliament-Funkadelic today and as luck would have it it's a Friday as well. 3208. Primus - Eyes of the Squirrel

Image
From: Green Naugahyde ; Year: 2011; Genre: Metal/Hard Rock/Funk I was binging on Primus and Les Claypool's music yesterday; I thought I would choose one from, (as far as I am aware), one of their albums I had not picked from yet. I love the outright funkiness of this track, plus the song is filled with great social commentary, but is excellently hidden so you do not have to pay attention to it unless you want to. Image
From: The Pretenders ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock/New Wave Caught myself in the mood for something from The Pretenders; I wasn't sure if I'd picked this rather sassy and provocative song yet, but I do not believe I have. It's one of those that you hear a lot but not to the point of ad nauseam; just a fun, light hearted track. Hear Brass in my Pocket on YouTube. 3204. Faith No More - I Started A Joke

Image
From: King For a Day... Fool For a Lifetime ; Year: 1995; Genre: Alternative Rock/Pop If my memory serves me correctly, I think it was a couple of years ago that Max got on my case a little for not picking Faith No More's pretty good cover of this hit track from the Bee Gees. I guess I finally got around to it; it's a good song and absolutely way past time in choosing it. The vocals are done excellently as well as the instrumentation and arrangement to, as every band should, make the song their own whilst keeping the spirit intact of the original. Hear I Started a Joke on YouTube.
