6829. Sonny Rollins - I Wish I Knew

Image
From: Here's to the People ; Year: 1991; Genre: Cool Jazz/Jazz Fusion Most into jazz and associated genres are most likely aware of the passing of jazz giant Sonny Rollins a couple of days ago. It is just so mind-blowing to think of all the music, musicians, and history he experienced in his 95 years on this Earth, let alone all of the decades he was active. To think, that he took a large part in and saw all the new forms of jazz and the people he played with. It is a rarity to see an active musician touring for so many years, especially in jazz live so long. He definitely will be missed and then some. Anyway, I had a lot of music from many eras to choose from for this song pick. My thoughts went to the '60s or '70s, but then I have noticed that jazz, overall, at least here in the U.S. was kind of in the background by the 1990s, so I checked out one of his albums from the early part of the decade. I have to say, I am overjoyed that I did so. This one in particular I found a...

6686. Kenny Barron & Terence Blanchard - One Little Acorn

Image
From: School Daze (Soundtrack) ; Year: 1988; Genre: Cool Jazz Lately I have been going back to this soundtrack album. This amazing piano and horn piece from the film is and always will be among my favourites on the disc. One Little Acorn actually has two tracks with a shorter reprise version that feature only the piano as well as the full song.   Hear One Little Acorn on YouTube.   Hear the piano solo version on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Apollo 100 - Joy (Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring)     My song pick 2 years ago today: Rick James - Glow   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sweet - Love Is Like Oxygen   My song pick 4 years ago today: Red Rider - Laughing Man   My song pick 5 years ago today: Heart - Straight On   My song pick 6 years ago today: Zones - Mourning Star   My song pick 7 years ago today: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Lenny My song pick 8 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Projec...

6633. Benny Carter - I Get a Kick Outta You

Image
From: Cosmopolite ; Year: 1956; Genre: Bossa Nova Jazz/Swing Jazz Over the years Benny Carter has become one of my many favourite jazz composers/arrangers/overall musicians. I do not believe that there is a single song he has recorded that I don't absolutely love. Anyway, this is a cover of the popular standard originally written by Cole Porter for his Broadway Musical Anything Goes , which has been recorded by many artists since.   Hear I Get a Kick Outta You on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Molly Hatchet - Jukin' City     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Bangles - Manic Monday   My song pick 3 years ago today: Wolfmother - Colossal   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Moody Blues - The Spirit   My song pick 5 years ago today: Fatback Band - (Do The) Spanish Hustle   My song pick 6 years ago today: Fairport Convention - Reynardine   My song pick 7 years ago today: The Kinks - Introduction to a Solution ...

6522. Chuck Mangione - Feels So Good

Image
From: Feels So Good ; Year: 1977; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Latin Jazz As of late a lot of music legends have passed, especially this year thus far. Found out that jazz maestro Chuck Mangione is the latest, he passed away a few days ago. He was mostly known in jazz circles and the flügelhorn is the instrument he is most associated with, although he played many others. This instrumental is probably his most famous composition, which has made its way not only on radio, but television, film and other media; chances are you've heard at least part of this one.   Hear Feels So Good on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Green Day - F.O.D.     My song pick 2 years ago today: Van Halen - Dreams   My song pick 3 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - The Great Sun Jester   My song pick 4 years ago today: King Crimson - Lady of the Dancing Water   My song pick 5 years ago today: Klaatu - Dog Star   My song pick 6 years ago today: Steely ...

6515. War - H2Overture

Image
From: Deliver the Word ; Year: 1973; Genre: Jazz Fusion/classical This bemusingly titled first track on this album is pure joy to the ears. Every aspect of it is truly gorgeous; the only criticism I can think of is that I wish it was twice as long. I guess that's wot the "repeat" function is for, but it takes a lot of times for me to go to the next song.   Hear  H 2 Overture on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Def Leppard - Rocket     My song pick 2 years ago today: Jigsaw - Just Another Clown   My song pick 3 years ago today: Living Colour - Sunshine Of Your Love   My song pick 4 years ago today: Kansas - All The World   My song pick 5 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Part Time Lover   My song pick 6 years ago today: 30 Seconds to Mars - Echelon My song pick 7 years ago today: Blind Melon - Deserted My song pick 8 years ago today: Forest - Graveyard My song pick 9 years ago today: Billy Joel - Laura My...

6471. Downtown Trio - Summertime

Image
From: Movements Vol. 12 ; Year: 2024 (1975); Genre: Cool Jazz/Funk I believe that I have stated it before, but I am always looking for recordings of this Gershwin standard from his popular opera Porgy & Bess . Lo and behold I found another amongst the many deep cuts on Tobias Kirmayer's Movements series.  This funky cool jazz instrumental version was originally performed live in 1975 and features primarily the Bossa Nova aspects of the west coast "cool" jazz styling.   Hear Summertime on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bob Welch - Sentimental Lady     My song pick 2 years ago today: Rare Earth - What'd I Say   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - In Brief Visitation   My song pick 4 years ago today: Geddy Lee - Slipping   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Sweet - Hell Raiser   My song pick 6 years ago today: ZZ Top - I Thank You My song pick 7 years ago today: Bay City Rollers - You Made Me Believe in...

6399. Tears for Fears - Advise for the Young at Heart

Image
From: The Seeds of Love ; Year: 1989; Genre: Rock/Jazz Rock Trying to stick with something lighter today; although with much of Tears for Fears music there is a lot of seriousness both lyrically and musically, so I'm just going to be superficial with this pick. With so much of this one their normal pop-oriented sound falls by the wayside for a very well done Bossa nova groove that is so relaxed in a great way that in my personal opinion does not only show the breadth of their musical ability, but just how multidimensional their creativity is.      Hear Advise for the Young at Heart on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Surfaris - Surfer Joe   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - She's a Devil   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Lively Ones - Crying Guitar (Surfer's Lament)   My song pick 4 years ago today: George Clinton - One Fun At a Time   My song pick 5 years ago today: Band of Horses ...

6259. Chet Atkins - Cast Your Fate to the Wind

Image
From: It's a Guitar World ; Year: 1967; Genre: West Coast Jazz/Cool Jazz This is without a doubt one of my favourite Vince Guaraldi compositions, which has luckily been covered an immense amount over the years by many artists, so I'm always hearing a new take on such an excellent track. As always, Chet approaches the song from his virtuoso guitar perspective and really gives it his all in his unique rendition.   Hear Cast Your Fate to the Wind on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Roll Me Away   My song pick 2 years ago today: Little Richard - I Don't Know What You've Got But It's Got Me (Parts 1+2)   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Stranglers - Peaches   My song pick 4 years ago today: Marillion - Power   My song pick 5 years ago today: John Oliva's Pain - Looking for Nothing   My song pick 6 years ago today: Pallas - Arrive Alive My song pick 7 years ago today: Devo - Are U X-per...

6165. Bob James - Nautilus

Image
From: One ; Year: 1974; Genre: Jazz Fusion Here's a noted musician and composer that you have probably heard quite a bit, especially if you've listened to rap/hip-hop or are a jazz aficionado. In fact it is highly improbable that you have not heard something from him unless you're a person living past the edge of civilization for the last 70 years or so. Nautilus in particular has been sampled a multitude of time by artists in hip-hop and related genres. This is definitely a great groove to zone out listening to; his work on the keys is definitely something to behold.   Hear Nautilus on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: War - War Drums   My song pick 2 years ago today: Sam & Dave - You Don't Know Like I Know   My song pick 3 years ago today: Black 47 - Livin' in America   My song pick 4 years ago today: Lenny LeBlanc - Dance Around the Campfire   My song pick 5 years ago today: Georges Bizet - Carmen Overture My song pick 6 ...

6006. Vince Guaraldi - Little Birdie

Image
From: A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (Original Soundtrack Recording) ; Year: 1973; Genre: Cool Jazz/Jazz Fusion Well, it is Thanksgiving once again here in The 'States, and I really wanted to pick something special for the occasion. Almost everybody who grew up since the 1960s knows Vince Guaraldi's work, especially his work with the Peanuts cartoons. He kind of single-handedly brought jazz back into popular culture by introducing it to one young generation after another; for me personally I have every melody from them etched in my mind over the years. Anyway, this is one I always have liked; it's kind of Woodstock's theme for the Thanksgiving special and I believe beyond. Wot's really neat about this track is that Vince himself performs the vocals in this snappy pop-jazz piece with some excellent brass as well.   Hear Little Birdie on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Elvis Presley - Kentucky Rain   My song pick 2 years ago today: Charlie ...

5741. Vince Guaraldi - Red Baron

Image
From: Oh Good Grief! ; Year: 1968; Genre: Bossa Nova Jazz/West Coast "Cool" Jazz Been listening to a lot of Vince Guaraldi's work lately; in popular culture, for the most part, his music and his style are synonymous with Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts cartoons. Because of this he is most likely one of the most recognizable authors and performers of West Coast or "Cool" Jazz; generations of children since the 1960s have had him and the Peanuts cartoons as part of their childhood.  Anyway, this one that is, I believe, the theme played for the Red Barron sub-story of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and is actually quite a complex and interesting piece that'll without-a-doubt bring some good memories to the forefront.   Hear Red Baron on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Dire Straits - The Bug   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Stone Roses - Sally Cinnamon   My song pick 3 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Star   My song...

5142. Stevie Wonder - Don't You Worry About a Thing

Image
From: Innervisions ; Year: 1973; Genre: Bossa Nova Jazz/Cool Jazz I'm having Stevie Wonder's music on my brain today for some reason and this Latin/Cool Jazz was one that I decided to go with for my pick. Image
From: Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus ; Year: 1962; Genre: Jazz/Cool Jazz I don't know wot it is, but every now and then I get an notion to listen to West Coast "Cool" Jazz, Vince Guaraldi's music in particular. Image
From: The Crow Soundtrack ; Year: 1994; Genre: Alternative Metal/Cool Jazz I've had some Rage on my mind for a short while now and really wanted to get another one of their songs picked.
