6872. The Allman Brothers Band - Don't Keep Me Wonderin'

Image
From: Idlewild South ; Year: 1970; Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock Recently, I read an insightful interview with the only surviving member of this historic band: Jai Johanny Johanson, or Jaimoe . He was one of the two amazing drummers/percussionists, (the other being Butch Trucks ), for the band throughout their most prosperous times and has appeared on the majority of their albums. I have to say that I still to this day love watching those two masters in the live recordings; almost like drumming professors putting on a clinic. Amongst a few neat things and anecdotes I learned was that each member had a tattoo of a psychedelic mushroom as kind of brotherhood bond and that he was proud to have the last one on his leg. It is still difficult for me to acknowledge that so many have passed on; they themselves were and are like monuments to American music. Anyway, I thought that I would revisit one of my favourite records; like most of their artistry, Idlewild South is best played all at on...

4708. The Allman Brothers Band - Sail Away

Image
From: Enlightened  Rogues ; Year: 1979; Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock I was watching television the other day and happened upon a program that featured this album; sure brought back some memories. Originally I got an old stereo 8-Track tape of Enlightened Rogues and listened to it a lot back in the day. I still have it somewhere but with 30 years and 4 major moves I've kind of lost it; now I've been listening to it again and I forgot how much I liked it. Anyway, this was, I believe the last track on the tape and was part of my main "path" through the 4 tracks; it's one of my favourites on the album for sure. Hear Sail Away on YouTube. Image
From: The Allman Brothers Band ; Year: 1969; Genre: Blues Rock I kind of had my mind set on picking one from The Allman Brothers today. 3916. The Allman Brothers Band - Stand Back

Image
From: Eat a Peach ; Year: 1972; Genre: Blues Rock/Southern Rock Dang, with this one I've run out of songs from the legendary Eat a Peach album to pick from. Even though this track isn't as popular as others on the record, this entire album is solid from first to last song in my opinion; Stand Back is no exception. Hear Stand Back on YouTube. 3603. The Allman Brothers Band - Not My Cross to Bear

Image
From: The Allman Brothers Band ; Year: 1969; Genre: Blues Rock/Southern Rock Gregg Allman, founding member, singer, songwriter, and keyboardist of the band of his and his already departed brother Duane's namesake passed away yesterday. It seems that I've been making too many picks like this lately, especially of bands and artists that I adore. He was taken at the young age of 69; definitely his music will live on for centuries to come. Anyway, this early song I thought exemplified his vocal style with that was so soulful voice. Hear Not My Cross to Bear on YouTube. 3486. The Allman Brothers Band - Statesboro Blues

Image
From: At Fillmore East ; Year: 1971; Genre: Blues Rock/Southern Rock Yesterday I learned of the passing of legendary drummer Butch Trucks , I don't really know wot to say... dang. Both him and Jaimoe are basically two of the greatest drummers of all time and have influenced the course of music for the last several decades and we will be feeling their influence for many, many years to come. Whenever I think of the two of them I'm immediately thinking of At Fillmore East and the musical clinic those two put on; it only seemed right to pick one the more legendary songs from the album to mark today. This is a blues originally done by Blind Willie McTell; and if you love music you should know this bluesy rock version. Hear Statesboro Blues on YouTube. 3094. The Allman Brothers Band - One Way Out

Image
From: Eat a Peach ; Year: 1972; Genre: Southern Rock When sitting down to make my pick this morning I had Allman Brothers on my mind, so you know wot that means.... Yeah, this is one of their jam songs that ends up being more of a blues rock concept of sort in the end between the cast of legendary musicians that comprised the band and how they interpreted the song. While not an original song, it might as well be; this is more or less the definitive version that everyone remembers. Hear One Way Out on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Dream Theater - The Ministry of Lost Souls My song pick two years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Give it Time My song pick three years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Waking Edge My song pick four years ago today: The Scorpions - The Good Die Young My song pick five years ago today: Megadeth - Elysian Fields My song pick six years ago today: Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli (Quintette du Hot Club de Fra...

2632 The Allman Brothers Band - Trouble No More

Image
From: Eat a Peach ; Year: 1972; Genre: Blues Rock/Southern Rock I woke up this morning with Allman Brothers' music running through my mind and it also felt like a great day to pick one of their songs as well. Anyway, this album has really no weak tracks at all, which is probably one of the reasons that it's so legendary; this song is no different than its brothers and sisters, it's great. This is of course a cover of the Muddy Waters tune in their signature southern rock/blues sound. Hear Trouble No More on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Simon & Garfunkle - Mrs. Robinson My song pick two years ago today: Rare Earth - Get Ready My song pick three years ago today: Trio of Doom - Continuum My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - Aqualung My song pick five years ago today: Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys - Wayfaring Stranger My song pick six years ago today: Billy Squier - In The Dark My song pick seven years ago today: Jethro...

2469 The Allman Brothers Band - Revival

Image
From: Idlewild South ; Year: 1970; Genre: Southern Rock I heard this one on the radio the other day and suppose it would be a great track to pick on this very busy day. As with most of The Allman Brothers songs, the music is top-notch. Hear Revival on YouTube. 2347 The Allman Brothers Band - Dreams

Image
From: The Allman Brothers Band ; Year: 1969: Genre: Southern Rock I had an incline to listen to some Allman Brothers this morning. This song has been covered a bit over the years, but this is, of course the original. I love the mix of blues and rock; it's such a great track. Hear Dreams on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love My song pick two years ago today: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Superstition My song pick three years ago today: Journey - To Play Some Music My song pick four years ago today: Apocalyptica featuring Till Lindemann - Helden My song pick five years ago today: James Gang - Funk 49 My song pick six years ago today: Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mine

2222 The Allman Brothers Band - Mountain Jam

Image
From: Eat a Peach ; Year: 1972; Genre: Southern Rock Six years ago today I noticed that I picked The Allman Brothers' song Blue Skies , which is one of my favourites, so, keeping with the theme I am picking another of their songs; for me I never tire of this great band. Anyway, this is an epic 33+ minute jam that was oddly enough roughly based on the Donovan song There is a Mountain , which can be heard here on YouTube . There is a lot of amazing freestyle soloing throughout that is incredible; especially Duane Allman's. Probably some would call this "musical masturbation," however if they are musicians it's just their own jealousy and ineptitude as musicians showing through. And of course if they are not musicians, they just have crappy taste in music. Hear a full recording of Mountain Jam on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Steve Vai - I Know You're Here My song pick two years ago today: Earthless - Godspeed My song pick three years ago...

2093 The Allman Brothers Band - Ramblin' Man

Image
From: Brothers and Sisters ; Year: 1973; Genre: Southern Rock The other day I heard this song come on the radio; I figured since I hadn't picked one of their songs in a while I would today. The Allman Brothers are and will always be one of my favourite bands out there. Interestingly enough, I was unsure as to which of their songs I was picking due to me believing that I had already picked this one in particular. I looked, and sure enough, I had yet to pick it, so here it is. This has to be one of The Allman Brothers Band's bigger hits, if not their biggest hit ever. As with the majority of their music, which this one is no different, the entire band really shows off their musical chops. If only Duane Allman would've lived long enough to be on this album; it definitely would have made it that much better. Hear Ramblin' Man on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Van der Graaf Generator - Pioneers Over c. My song pick two years ago today: Al Di Meol...

996 The Allman Brothers Band - Midnight Rider

Image
996 The Allman Brothers Band - Midnight Rider The other day I heard this one playing on the radio and I knew I had a song pick; an amazing song from a legendary band. Anyway, this Gregg Allman and Robert Payne composition is definitely a classic, it has been covered many times over the years; Gregg Allman also re-recorded and re-arranged it for his '73 solo album Laid Back . Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is Gregg Allman's solo version on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Ian Anderson - Made In England My song pick two years ago today: Mel McDaniel - Louisiana Saturday Night +

Song 545 ( Gregg Allman - I'm No Angel )

Image
This song was running on the radio this evening whilst I was taking my wife out and about. It's probably one of the best and honest love songs that I have ever heard; basically saying "that if you love me, this is me warts and all." Of course the the southern rock heavy guitar music sells the song the rest of the way. Watch the music video on YouTube. +

Song 343 (The Allman Brothers Band--"Whipping Post")

Image
Lately this song has been running through my mind whilst I have been going about my day; I decided that I would choose it. It is mostly known for is the extended guitar and keyboard improvisation/solos. Another aspect that makes this song unique sounding is the odd time signatures within. Probably the extended live version at the Filmore East is the most memorable version to those who have followed the band. That extended version took up one whole side of a vinyl record with massively expanded solos by both Betts and Allman. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is the live recording from Live at the Fillmore East on YouTube. +
