5707. Weather Report - River People

Image
From: Mr. Gone ; Year: 1978; Genre: Jazz Fusion In this one the band really leans into the more electronica aspects of their sound to make this rather funky piece of jazz fusion. You could almost call it a "soundscape"overall from the rhythm section, however there is a lot going up front that really grabs your attention.   Hear River People on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Audioslave - Until We Fall   My song pick 2 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Power of the Laser Dragon Fire   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Cold Dead Reckoning (2044)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Good Rockin' My song pick 5 years ago today: Carmen - Bullfight My song pick 6 years ago today: The Outfield - Say It Isn't So My song pick 7 years ago today: Quarterflash - Take Me To Heart My song pick 8 years ago today: Carly Simon - You’re so Vain My song pick 9 years ago today: Clifford Nyren - Keep Running Away My song pick 10 years ag

5706. 10,000 Maniacs - Trouble Me

Image
From: Blind Man's Zoo ; Year: 1989; Genre: Alternative Rock Here's yet another song that I had not heard in ages just come to mind that is also from a band that I have woefully neglected over the years. There's always been something calming and reassuring about this track, most likely Natalie Merchant's vocals and the overall structure and playing throughout. Wotever the case, it's a rather nice "blast from the past" for this Monday.   Hear Trouble Me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Roxette - It Must Have Been Love   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dream Theater - The Best of Times   My song pick 3 years ago today: Seals & Crofts - We May Never Pass This Way (Again)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Arnold Layne My song pick 5 years ago today: Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds - Don't Pull Your Love My song pick 6 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Sleep Of No Dreaming My song pick 7 years ago today: Jim &

5705. Spacehog - Carry On

Image
From: The Chinese Album ; Year: 1998; Genre: Glam Rock For some reason unbeknownst to me I felt the urge to pick another one from this often overlooked band. This is one of the singles from their second record, and while not at the same level as the songs on their debut album, it's still an awesome time to be had to sit back and bob your head to these tracks.   Hear Carry On on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Robin Trower - Bluebird   My song pick 2 years ago today: Pleasure - Glide   My song pick 3 years ago today: Wings - Venus and Mars   My song pick 4 years ago today: Pearl Jam - I Got Id My song pick 5 years ago today: Crash Test Dummies - In the Days of the Cavemen My song pick 6 years ago today: Muse - City of Delusion My song pick 7 years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away My song pick 8 years ago today: Barenaked Ladies - If I Had $1000000 My song pick 9 years ago today: Rush - The Anarchist My song pick 10 years ago today: Audiosl

5704. Brenton Wood - The Oggum Boogum Song

Image
From: Oogum Boogum ; Year: 1967; Genre: R&B/Soul/Funk This track and other songs from Brenton Wood have been on my mind off and on for a few days now. This rather fun song that's a wee bit of a novelty, but with so much great music, singing, and of course that infectious groove that will get even the most rhythmically challenged out on the dance floor.   Hear The Oogum Boogum Song on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: George Clinton - Do Fries Go With That Shake?   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jefferson Starship - Alien   My song pick 3 years ago today: Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get It Right   My song pick 4 years ago today: Ten Years After - Over the Hill My song pick 5 years ago today: The Who - Sister Disco My song pick 6 years ago today: Pallas - Shock Treatment My song pick 7 years ago today: Marillion - Hooks in You My song pick 8 years ago today: Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity My song pick 9 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Breaking the Sile

5703. The Noteables - Funky Frog

Image
From: Movements Vol.8 ; Year: 2016 (1968); Genre: Soul/Funk Bemused by the title of this song, I had to make it my pick for this Funky Friday . There's a lot to like about this short and sweet funky soul piece, except for one glaring detail: it pretty much music and structure wise is a copy/paste of James Brown's massive hit Papa's Got a Brand New Bag. Despite this, (or perhaps because of this), it's a real fun song to play in any setting from dance floor to headphones; you'll be dancing for sure in any case.   Hear Funky Frog on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Three Steps   My song pick 2 years ago today: Soundgarden - Superunknown   My song pick 3 years ago today: Tesla - Afterlife   My song pick 4 years ago today: Tom Rapp - Stardancer My song pick 5 years ago today: The Police - Mother My song pick 6 years ago today: Luther - Don't Wanna Be a Fool My song pick 7 years ago today: Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick B

5702. UB40 - Red Red Wine

Image
From: Labour of Love ; Year: 1983; Genre: Reggae Every time this song comes on it puts me in a great mood and even if I'm sitting down I am still moving to the infectious beat. Since this amazing reggae cover was first released it has seemingly always been around, at least around me. Without a doubt it is the default version that comes to mind if you think about the song.   Hear Red Red Wine on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - Do Your Thing   My song pick 2 years ago today: Steve Miller Band - Fandango   My song pick 3 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Born on the Bayou   My song pick 4 years ago today: April Wine - Caught in the Crossfire My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Ears of Tin My song pick 6 years ago today: Melvins - With Teeth My song pick 7 years ago today: Queen - Fat Bottomed Girls My song pick 8 years ago today: Styx - Do Things My Way My song pick 9 years ago today: Steeleye

5701. Rare Earth - Midnight Lady

Image
From: Midnight Lady ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk Rock/Soul Was vacillating between a few bands/artists to pick for today's song, but eventually settled on choosing one from the one and only R&B/Funk/Soul group: Rare Earth. I absolutely love the rhythm section of this song, both the Latin-influenced drums/percussion and that awesome bass line with the thumping pedal tones. On top of that you got the great lead instruments and vocals with those very '70s sounding strings accompanying; a fun song all in all.   Hear Midnight Lady on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Ventures - Journey to the Stars   My song pick 2 years ago today: Missing Link - Sorcery   My song pick 3 years ago today: Boston - Party   My song pick 4 years ago today: Azteca - Non Pacem My song pick 5 years ago today: The Zombies - Beechwood Park My song pick 6 years ago today: Three Dog Night - The Loner My song pick 7 years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Babies My song pick 8 years ag

5700. The Ramblers - Just for Chicks

Image
From: Dodge City/Just for Chicks (single) ; Year: 1963; Genre: Surf Rock/Blues Rock Had a bit of fun trying to find out more about this band and song, and even at that there's not much out there apparently. Most of this is due to the fact that they seemingly only recorded this one single as a band/under the name The Ramblers, and how many other bands over the last century have gone by the same moniker. The only real reason I know about them is because legendary producer and sound smith extraordinaire Joe Meek was the one that did all of the studio work for the band in his very unique way that he is known for. Anyway, as with anything Meek touched, this track has a lot of interesting modern sounds that were very much breakthrough at the time, which made this bluesy instrumental surf rock tune a joy to the ears.   Hear Just for Chicks on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Amon Amarth - Raven's Flight   My song pick 2 years ago today: Duran Duran - Come Undone   My so

5699. Primus - Erin on the Side of Caution

Image
From: Conspiranoid (EP) ; Year: 2022; Genre: Progressive Rock/Funk Rock Decided that I would start this workweek off with this song, which is actually my favourite track from their most recent released EP: Conspiranoid . If you like complex riff-based music with a very funky rhythm and syncopation, then this one is truly one that you'd love.   Hear Erin on the Side of Caution on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Florida Man   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Moody Blues - Voices in the Sky   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Kinks - Lola   My song pick 4 years ago today: Fleet Foxes - Grown Ocean My song pick 5 years ago today: Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady) My song pick 6 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Only Solitaire My song pick 7 years ago today: Modest Petrovitch Mussorgsky - Intermezzo Symphonique in Modo Classico My song pick 8 years ago today: The Soul Seven - The Cissy's Thang My song pick 9 years ago today: Soundgar

5698. Jethro Tull - Ginnungagap

Image
From: RökFlöte ; Year: 2023; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock Kind of weird, but the fact that Ian Anderson and company were in the studio recording a brand new 'Tull album to be released in late April of this young year kind of flew under my personal radar so to speak. I'm not a huge social media user even when it comes to one of my favourite bands, so I guess it happened. From wot I can figure out, this is going to be a semi-concept album or have a couple of loose themes that the songs play on; one is apparently Norse Folklore/Old Religious themes and the seems to be about the "Rock Flute." They went all Blue Öyster Cult/Motörhead with the album's title with the use of umlauts on the "o"s and also used references to the Norse term Ragnarok as well as using the German spelling for flute in the title; kind of fun and delightfully pretentious all at the same time! Anyway, I just happened to see this video of the song had just been uploaded yesterday, so

5697. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Guinnevere

Image
From: Crosby, Stills & Nash ; Year: 1969; Genre: Folk/Folk Rock/Jazz It's a good bet now that everyone has heard of the passing of legendary singer/songwriter/musician David Crosby; as with what seems to be happening more often as of late, I'm, of course, choosing one of his songs. This rather interesting track written and sung by Crosby on the debut record for the trio whilst mostly being of the folk rock persuasion, it has a notable infusion of jazz, which makes it somewhat unique.    Hear Guinnevere on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Yellow No 5 - Everything Cherries   My song pick 2 years ago today: Pallas - Blood and Roses   My song pick 3 years ago today: Faith No More - Zombie Eaters   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby My song pick 5 years ago today: The Who - The Song Is Over My song pick 6 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Questlords of Inverness, Ride to the Galactic Fortress! 5695/96. Parliament - Prelude/Gamin' On Ya

Image
From: The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk Been listening to this record quite a bit lately and thought I'd make another Funky Friday pick off of it; actually a double pick in this case. These are the first two tracks on it with Prelude being the obvious overture/intro and Gamin' On Ya being the first actual song on this classic collection of funk.   Hear Prelude/Gamin' On Ya on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Ram Jam - Black Betty   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jigsaw - Wildfire   My song pick 3 years ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)   My song pick 4 years ago today: IQ - Awake and Nervous My song pick 5 years ago today: Nirvana - Polly My song pick 6 years ago today: Maktub - Lies My song pick 7 years ago today: Al Stewart - Year of the Cat My song pick 8 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Dreamworld My song pick 9 years ago today: Primus - John the Fisherman My song pick 10 years ago today:

5694. Joan Baez - Rejoice in the Sun

Image
From: The Original Soundtrack Album "Silent Running" ; Year: 1972; Genre: Folk Rock/Folk Joan Baez's music and absolutely beautiful vocals have been on my mind a lot lately; I happened upon her two songs from the soundtrack of the early 1970s film Silent Running , which really caught my attention. All of the music from the film was written by Peter Schickele with lyrics by Diane Lampert on the those two songs sung by Joan Baez. For those perhaps unaware, Peter Schickele is the creator and "genius" behind the classical comedy act P.D. Q. Bach , which has spanned at least five decades.   Hear Rejoice in the Sun on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Uriah Heep - Hold Your Head Up   My song pick 2 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Rain When I Die   My song pick 3 years ago today: Return to Forever - Spain   My song pick 4 years ago today: Asia - The Last to Know My song pick 5 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Childhood's End My song pick 6 years

5693. Dave Loggins - Please Come to Boston

Image
From: Apprentice (In A Musical Workshop) ; Year: 1974; Genre: Rock/Pop Wow, this song certainly brings back some memories; heard it a lot as a young child and through my teenage years. It's one of those tracks that both sound like the era it was recorded and somewhat timeless at the same time. This is probably mostly due to the easily relatable of traveling and longing for home, or at least that which is familiar. This was Dave Loggins biggest and his most recognizable song, although, he has written many, many hit songs for other artists, so by absolutely no means should he be considered a "one hit wonder."   Hear Please Come to Boston on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bon Jovi - All I Want Is Everything   My song pick 2 years ago today: Megadeth - Death From Within   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steven Wilson - Perfect Life   My song pick 4 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - This Ain't the Summer of Love My song pick 5 years ago today: Dick Dal

5692. Ozric Tentacles - Butterfly Garden

Image
From: Technicians of the Sacred ; Year: 2015; Genre: Progressive Rock/Electronica Been quite a busy last couple of days and I'm finally getting to use my computer, so I'm making a late-ish pick.  Anyway, for last few days I have been really wanting to choose another track from Ozric Tentacles; funny enough, for once I am going with the shortest song on this album, however, it is still just over five minutes in length. 😁   Hear Butterfly Garden on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Billy Joel - Leningrad   My song pick 2 years ago today: Hot Butter - Popcorn   My song pick 3 years ago today: Parliament - Agony of Defeet   My song pick 4 years ago today: Dream Theater - Untethered Angel My song pick 5 years ago today: Oasis - Supersonic My song pick 6 years ago today: U2 - A Sort of Homecoming My song pick 7 years ago today: A-ha - The Sun Always Shines on T.V. 5691. Neil Diamond - Dry Your Eyes

Image
From: Beautiful Noise ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock Since here in the U.S., (and from what I can tell, a few other nations too), we're celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day I thought I'd pick another song about the historical civil rights icon, activist, and minister whose birthday marks the event. Apparently, Neil Diamond and Robbie Robertson wrote this rather majestic piece in remembrance of the assassination of King and the way the masses of his acolytes and like-minded individuals felt after the tragedy occurred.   Hear Dry Your Eyes on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - The Zealot Gene   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dick Dale and his Del-Tones - Mr. Eliminator   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jane's Addiction - Just Because   My song pick 4 years ago today: Journey - Remember Me My song pick 5 years ago today: The Cranberries - Linger My song pick 6 years ago today: Sammy Hagar - There's Only One Way to Rock My song pick 7 yea

5690. Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Hold Back the Water

Image
From: Bachman-Turner Overdrive ; Year: 1973; Genre: Hard Rock It would seem as if the steady stream of musical artists passing away continues; this time it's the drummer of BTO and Brave Belt: Rob Bachman . The younger brother of ex-bandmate musician/singer/songwriter Randy Bachman and guitarist Tim Bachman , he died at the young age of 69. Anyway, this was one of the song he co-wrote with the band from their first record after they changed their name from Brave Belt to the famous Bachman-Turner Overdrive. As with the rest of the album, this one is "album oriented rock" with every one of the tracks, including this one, firmly in the Canadian Hard Rock genre.   Hear Hold Back the Water on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Golden Earring - Long Blond Animal   My song pick 2 years ago today: Lakeside - Strung Out   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Long-a-Growing   My song pick 4 years ago today: Neil Young - Old Man My song pick 5 years ago t

5689. The Cult - Spiritwalker

Image
From: Dreamtime ; Year: 1984; Genre: Hard Rock/Rock Have a bunch of The Cult's music on my mind today and decided that I would pick one. Spiritwalker was one that apparently existed when the band went by another name: Death Cult, and appeared as the lead single off of their debut studio album, Dreamtime as The Cult. Great track to get the blood moving and makes your right foot heavier whilst driving.   Hear Spiritwalker on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Boyz II Men - Motownphilly   My song pick 2 years ago today: Yes - Then   My song pick 3 years ago today: Brave Belt - Goodbye, Soul Shy   My song pick 4 years ago today: Klaatu - Little Neutrino My song pick 5 years ago today: Pallas - Win or Lose My song pick 6 years ago today: AC/DC - Rock 'N' Roll Damnation My song pick 7 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - One Way Out My song pick 8 years ago today: Dream Theater - The Ministry of Lost Souls My song pick 9 years ago today: Bachman-T

5688. Midnight Express - Danger Zone

Image
From: Danger Zone (12 inch); Year: 1983; Genre: Funk/Soul Was messing around listening to some funky music I'd never heard prior and came upon this hidden gem. I don't know much about Midnight Express, (or The Midnight Express Band as they are also apparently know for that matter), but I really enjoy this electronic infused early '80s funk for sure.   Hear Danger Zone on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Ronettes - I Can Hear Music   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Wasted Words   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - The Main Monkey Business   My song pick 4 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - For Your Love My song pick 5 years ago today: The Offspring - A Million Miles Away My song pick 6 years ago today: Imagination - Flashback My song pick 7 years ago today: Blue Cheer - Just a Little Bit My song pick 8 years ago today: Soundgarden - Outshined My song pick 9 years ago today: The Kinks - All Day and All of the Night

5687. Beck, Bogert & Appice - Sweet Sweet Surrender

Image
From: Beck, Bogert & Appice ; Year: 1973; Genre: Blues Rock Yesterday I was shocked at learning of the passing of guitarist virtuoso Jeff Beck; definitely needed to choose one of the songs he did. I thought of this one-off supergroup featuring mainly Beck, Tim Bogert, and Carmine Appice; this amazing track seemed like a perfect fit for today's overall mood. It also features Three Dog Night's singer Danny Hutton performing backing vocals and keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon playing piano on the song.   Hear Sweet Sweet Surrender on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Alice Cooper - Wish You Were Here   My song pick 2 years ago today: Return to Forever - The Musician   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - Superconductor   My song pick 4 years ago today: Eddie Money - Two Tickets to Paradise My song pick 5 years ago today: Wilson Pickett - Soul Dance Number Three My song pick 6 years ago today: Weather Report - Blackthorn Rose My song pick 7 years ago today: Te

5686. Santo & Johnny - Sea Shells

From: Hawaii ; Year: 1961; Genre: Instrumental Rock/Jazz/Hawaiian Music Just a pretty song that gives you the feeling of being in a far off exotic locale; a perfect tune to hear in the cold months of winter without a doubt.    Hear Sea Shells on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Nightwatchman - It Begins Tonight   My song pick 2 years ago today: Foghat - Drivin' Wheel   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush (Neil Peart) - Der Trommler (Drum Solo)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Billy Joe Royal - Cherry Hill Park My song pick 5 years ago today: Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses My song pick 6 years ago today: Al Di Meola - Black Cat Shuffle My song pick 7 years ago today: David Bowie - Starman My song pick 8 years ago today: King Crimson - Starless My song pick 9 years ago today: Black 47 - Maria's Wedding My song pick 10 years ago today: Van Halen - 1984 My song pick 11 years ago today: Savatage - Holocaust My song pick 12 years ago today: The Unite
