6852. Funkadelic - Mommy, What's a Funkadelic?

Image
From: Funkadelic ; Year: 1970; Genre: Soul/Psychedelic Funk I wonder what it was like back in the day when people dropped the needle down on this brand-new album and were greeted by this out-of-this-world funky psychedelia that the world had not truly experienced before? For me, I was born in a time that this music was already permeating the U.S. culture, so I have no idea wot this did for those listening to it for the first time. Anyway, as I have repeated endlessly: Eddie Hazel's mind-blowing guitar playing with that wah-wah pedal really is my main draw, but I will also state that Billy "Bass" Nelson's grooving bass is exquisite as well.    Hear Mommy, What's a Funkadelic? on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Fetch Me the Pongmaster     My song pick 2 years ago today: The (Young) Rascals - In the Midnight Hour     My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - Peaceable Kingdom   My song pick 4 years ago t...

6782. Funkadelic - Adolescent Funk

Image
From: Hardcore Jollies ; Year: 1976; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Psychedelic Soul/Funk Going with one of my favourite funk bands for today's pick; sure I have picked a lot of P-Funk, but I am certain that there is no such thing as too much P-Funk, especially the Funkadelic side of things 😁. This is kind of a mellower, jazzier piece that leans into their psychedelic soul background, which makes for a great song to bring this legendary album to a close.     Hear Adolescent Funk on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Ain't No Good Life     My song pick 2 years ago today: Johnny Rivers - Secret Agent Man   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - Resist   My song pick 4 years ago today: Heart - The Oldest Story in the World   My song pick 5 years ago today: Cream - Sitting on Top of the World   My song pick 6 years ago today: Van Der Graaf Generator - Forever Falling   My song pick 7 years ago today:...

6775. George Clinton - Atomic Dog

Image
From: Computer Games ; Year: 1982; Genre: Funk Thought I'd already chosen this one, which is George Clinton's biggest hits from his solo recordings. It has been sampled and used in popular media a lot over the years as well as just being a great funk standard.   Hear Atomic Dog on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: War - Vibeka   My song pick 2 years ago today: Spacehog - Only a Few   My song pick 3 years ago today: Duran Duran - New Religion   My song pick 4 years ago today: T. 6697. Parliament - Mr. Wiggles

Image
From: Motor Booty Affair ; Year: 1978; Genre: Funk Did I ever mention that I really love Motor Booty Affair ? Well, if not, I do; one of my favourite P-Funk albums. This is the song you hear if you just drop the needle/press play; very fun track all the way around.    Hear Mr. Wiggles on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: ABBA - Slipping Through My Fingers     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Temptations - I Truly, Truly Believe   My song pick 3 years ago today: Neil Diamond - Dry Your Eyes   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Zealot Gene   My song pick 5 years ago today: Dick Dale and his Del-Tones - Mr. Eliminator   My song pick 6 years ago today: Jane's Addiction - Just Because   My song pick 7 years ago today: Journey - Remember Me My song pick 8 years ago today: The Cranberries - Linger My song pick 9 years ago today: Sammy Hagar - There's Only One Way to Rock My song pick 10 yea...

Image
From: Chocolate City ; Year: 1975; Genre: Funk Sticking with one of my "go to" and favourite funky bands for this extremely busy Friday.   Hear Side Effects on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Charley Pride - Burgers and Fries     My song pick 2 years ago today: Normaal - Oerend Hard   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - Everybody is a Star   My song pick 4 years ago today: Steely Dan - Bad Sneakers   My song pick 5 years ago today: Fates Warning - Seven Stars   My song pick 6 years ago today: Grand Funk Railroad - Sin's a Good Man's Brother   My song pick 7 years ago today: Jimi Hendrix Experience - Burning of the Midnight Lamp My song pick 8 years ago today: ABBA - Dance (While the Music Still Goes On) My song pick 9 years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Moonlight Serenade My song pick 10 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Old Black Cat My song pick 11 years ago today: Parliament -...

6599. Parliament - The Motor-Booty Affair

Image
From: Motor Booty Affair ; Year: 1978; Genre: Funk Personally, it would be impossible for me to pick a favourite P-Funk album. Though, if I did have to choose one I would probably say that my favourite would be the one currently in the player or on the turntable. That said, I've always loved Motor Booty Affair just for the crazy zaniness and of course that infectious groove. This is, of course, the title track and is quite smooth and very danceable.   Hear The Motor-Booty Affair on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Alphaville - Fallen Angel     My song pick 2 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - I Am the Storm   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Psyche   My song pick 4 years ago today: Wolfmother - Apple Tree   My song pick 5 years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand My song pick 6 years ago today: Toronto - Even the Score   My song pick 7 years ago today: Kreeps - The Dead Sled My...

6542. Bootsy's New Rubber Band - Funk Me Dirty

Image
From: Blasters of the Universe ; Year: 1993; Genre: Funk Made it to the end of another workweek safe and sound... well... more or less. Nothing like some P-Funk to lift the mood... this entire album is filled to the brim with Parliament-Funkadelic alumni, so you know it's going to be top-shelf bump music.    Hear Funk Me Dirty on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: B.T. 6422. Funkadelic - I Got a Thing, You Got a Thing, Everybody's Got a Thing

Image
From: Funkadelic ; Year: 1970; Genre: Funk/Psychedelic Soul I have always, for myself anyway, gone by the axiom "come for Parliament, but stay for Funkadelic." They are like peanutbutter and jelly, excellent by themselves, but out-of-this-world together.   Hear I Got a Thing, You Got a Thing, Everybody's Got a Thing on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Boyz II Men - In the Still of the Night (I'll Remember)   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - One Rainy Wish   My song pick 3 years ago today: April Wine - Cat's Claw   My song pick 4 years ago today: Alphaville - Big In Japan   My song pick 5 years ago today: Primus - Mary the Ice Cube   My song pick 6 years ago today: Mastodon - Andromeda My song pick 7 years ago today: Deep Purple - King of Dreams My song pick 8 years ago today: Counting Crows - Round Here My song pick 9 years ago today: Devo - Through Being Cool My song pick 10 years ago to...

6415. Parliament - Testify

Image
From: Up for the Down Stroke ; Year: 1974; Genre: Funk/Soul/R&B You could look at this track two ways: 1. it is a cover, or 2. it is a re-recording. Originally was cut for the predecessor Doo-Wop group: The Parliaments , of which George Clinton was the leader under the title (I Wanna) Testify . It was, of course, made funkier for Parliament, which I say is a plus.   Hear Testify on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Iain Matthews - Morgan the Pirate   My song pick 2 years ago today: Soundgarden - Tighter & Tighter   My song pick 3 years ago today: Damn Yankees - Runaway   My song pick 4 years ago today: Camel - Lies   My song pick 5 years ago today: Hawkwind - 65 Million Years Ago   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Police - Don't Stand Too Close To Me My song pick 7 years ago today: Mastodon - The Wolf is Loose My song pick 8 years ago today: Steely Dan - Don't Take Me Alive My song pick 9 years ago today: Jethr...

6323. Parliament (feat. Scarface & Mudbone) - I'm Gon Make U Sick O'me

Image
From: Medicaid Fraud Dogg ; Year: 2018; Genre: Funk/Hip-Hop Busy Friday once again. I guess I will just "homer out" and pick one from one of my absolute favourite funk bands/artists.    Hear I'm Gon Make U Sick O'me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels   My song pick 2 years ago today: Wilson Pickett - Stagger Lee   My song pick 3 years ago today: Elton John - The Fox   My song pick 4 years ago today: Miles Davis - Blue Haze   My song pick 5 years ago today: Bootsy Collins - Hyper Space   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Cure - Lovesong My song pick 7 years ago today: Steeleye Span - The Lofty Tall Ship/Shallow Brown My song pick 8 years ago today: Powerwolf - Sanctus Dominus My song pick 9 years ago today: Simple Minds - Alive and Kicking My song pick 10 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Love Story My song pick 11 years ago today: Primus - My Name is Mud My song pick 12 year...

6298. Funkadelic - Eulogy and Light

Image
From: Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow ; Year: 1970; Genre: Psychedelic Rock Just wanted to pick another track that features Eddie Hazel's guitar playing, no other reason.    Hear Eulogy and Light on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Gene Autry - Joy to the World   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rufus Thomas - I'll Be Your Santa Baby   My song pick 3 years ago today: David Bowie & Bing Crosby - Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy   My song pick 4 years ago today: Uriah Heep - Take Away My Soul   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Salamander's Rag Time   My song pick 6 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Universe on Fire My song pick 7 years ago today: Bon Jovi - Lay Your Hands on Me My song pick 8 years ago today: James Brown - Santa Claus Gave Me a Brand New Start My song pick 9 years ago today: The United States of America - Stranded in Time My song pick 10 years ago today: Boston - Can't...

6274. Funkadelic - Miss Lucifer's Love

Image
From: America Eats Its Young ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk Rock/Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock/Soul Here's one that really defies genres to its core; it is hard funky rock with a blistering guitar, (remind me again why Eddy Hazel isn't considered amongst the best "axe slingers" of all time?), all the psychedelia you can handle steeped in soul as well as heavy technical music that wouldn't be out of place with mid 1970s King Crimson. Dang, all I can say is that this one is the very embodiment of a musical tour-'d-force.   Hear Miss Lucifer's Love on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Steeleye Span - The Bonny Black Hare   My song pick 2 years ago today: Cheap Trick - Reach Out   My song pick 3 years ago today: Soundgarden - New Damage   My song pick 4 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Divine Wind   My song pick 5 years ago today: Funkadelic - Butt to Buttresusitation   My song pick 6 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby - Halcyon Days My s...

6210. Funkadelic - Wars of Armageddon

Image
From: Maggot Brain ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Psychedelic Rock/Soul/Hard Rock As I have probably stated prior: Funkadelic is one of my all-time favourite bands, and Maggot Brain has definitely become my top liked from them. This is the last track on the record and they really let it all out with the loud random statements and weird sound effects, but for me personally I love the fusion of the starkly differing and similar sound and genres. Of course, anything with a guitar solo from the late-great Eddy Hazel is a win in my book.   Hear Wars of Armageddon on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Black 47 - Fanatic Heart   My song pick 2 years ago today: Motörhead - Hellraiser   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Charlie Daniels Band - Reflections   My song pick 4 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot   My song pick 5 years ago today: Victor Wooten - Keep it Low   My song pick 6 years ago today: Klaatu -...

6126. Funkadelic - Take Your Dead Ass Home! (Say Som'n Nasty)

Image
From: Tales of Kidd Funkadelic ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk Bringing another workweek to a close with some funk; as I have said prior: I came for Parliament, but stayed for Funkadelic; love both P-Funk bands immensely, but in the end I lean slightly towards the later. By the way the title suggests, the song does contain some... not so polite language, but very fun nevertheless.   Hear Take Your Dead Ass Home! (Say Som'n Nasty) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Exciters - Tell Him   My song pick 2 years ago today: Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - I Promise To Remember   My song pick 3 years ago today: Santana - Song of the Wind   My song pick 4 years ago today: Elton John - Jamaica Jerk-Off   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jimmy Castor - Amazon My song pick 6 years ago today: April Wine - Enough is Enough My song pick 7 years ago today: Faith No More - Falling to Pieces My song pick 8 years ago today: The Presidents of...

5993. Funkadelic - Field Maneuvers

Image
From: Uncle Jam Wants You ; Year: 1979; Genre: Funk/Rock/Soul Last week I totally boned it and did not make a Funky Friday Pick ; not letting that mistake happen two weeks in a row.... Anyway, with Veteran's Day, [known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world], being observed this Friday, (even though it will be tomorrow officially being 11/11 at the 11th hour, which marked the end of WWI), this rather apt-titled and themed funk record just seemed like a great fit. It's another one of those situations with this instrumental song in particular where the only criticism I have is that it is not long enough to fully enjoy without playing it again.   Hear Field Maneuvers on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Dick Dale and his Del-Tones - The Victor   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Shoshana Sleeping   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rammstein - Deutschland   My song pick 4 years ago today: Boston - Sail Away   My song p...

5942. Funkadelic - You Hit the Nail on the Head

Image
From: America Eats Its Young ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk I happened to have this classic double record on my mind the other day and thought that I would make it today's Funky Friday Pick . You Hit the Nail on the Head is the opening track that is really seven minutes of P-Funk musical bliss.   Hear You Hit the Nail on the Head on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Boston - Tell Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ian Anderson - The Browning of the Green   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Roadways   My song pick 4 years ago today: Helloween - Pumpkins United     My song pick 5 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Hatesong My song pick 6 years ago today: Funkadelic - Phunklords My song pick 7 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - When Time Stood Still My song pick 8 years ago today: Soundgarden - Loud Love My song pick 9 years ago today: Joachim Witt - Das Jüngste Gericht My song pick 10 years ago...

5892. Funkadelic - Some More

Image
From: Free Your Mind... And Your Ass Will Follow ; Year: 1970; Genre: Blues/Funk/Soul Here's a perfect song to choose for this Friday, which is very bluesy and funky with that spice of psychedelia you'd expect from P-Funk. I absolutely love that Bernie Worrell's playing on that Hammond Organ and the legendary guitar and voice of Eddie Hazel.   Hear Some More on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Journey - Destiny   My song pick 2 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Electric Requiem   My song pick 3 years ago today: HammerFall - Never Forgive, Never Forget   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hall & Oates - Perkiomen My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - North Sea Oil My song pick 6 years ago today: Lakeside - Taboo My song pick 7 years ago today: The Flying Burrito Brothers - Sweet Desert Childhood My song pick 8 years ago today: Cream - Sunshine of Your Love My song pick 9 years ago today: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit ...

5857. Parliament - Unfunky UFO

Image
From: Mothership Connection ; Year: 1975; Genre: Funk/Jazz Fusion/Progressive Rock Wow! Where did June go? Sped right on by without me noticing or so it would seem. Anyway, I had every intention to choose a funky track by an artist I rarely pick, but I just couldn't get this landmark record off my mind; is that a bad thing? I think absolutely not! Unfunky UFO is kind of a hidden gem on the album, if you will, being dwarfed by its larger-than-life-itself brethren from the record. So much more musically going on throughout this one than just an amazing funk track; this one would stand up well with the best progressive rock songs out there in my opinion, and you can get down and boogie to it to boot. Truly a work of art.   Hear Unfunky UFO on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bread - Let Your Love Go   My song pick 2 years ago today: Simple Minds - Love Song   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Hard Liner   My song pick 4 years a...

5822. George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars - T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (Fly Away)

Image
From: T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. ; Year: 1996; Genre: R&B/Funk Recently started listening to this record once again and thought this Friday would be an excellent time to choose one from it. This album features not only George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars, but some classic Parliament-Funkadelic alums as well. Not only that, the album, ( T he A wesome P ower O f A F ully O perational M othership), and this title-track is a reference to The Mothership that has been such a big part of the two bands' mythos for so long, so that even makes it all the more awesome!    Hear T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (Fly Away) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Huey Lewis & the News - The Heart of Rock & Roll   My song pick 2 years ago today: War - Why Can't We Be Friends?   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Sail Away   My song pick 4 years ago today: Soundgarden - Ty Cobb My song pick 5 years ago today: ZZ Top - Got Me Under Pres...

5695/96. Parliament - Prelude/Gamin' On Ya

Image
From: The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk Been listening to this record quite a bit lately and thought I'd make another Funky Friday pick off of it; actually a double pick in this case. These are the first two tracks on it with Prelude being the obvious overture/intro and Gamin' On Ya being the first actual song on this classic collection of funk.   Hear Prelude/Gamin' On Ya on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Ram Jam - Black Betty   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jigsaw - Wildfire   My song pick 3 years ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)   My song pick 4 years ago today: IQ - Awake and Nervous My song pick 5 years ago today: Nirvana - Polly My song pick 6 years ago today: Maktub - Lies My song pick 7 years ago today: Al Stewart - Year of the Cat My song pick 8 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Dreamworld My song pick 9 years ago today: Primus - John the Fisherman My song pi...
