Image
From: E-Man Groovin' ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk/R&B Today is both Halloween and a Funky Friday, so I get to combine a couple of things, and not only that, I'm making a double pick today as well. So this is both my 59th and 60th straight Funky Friday pick in a row! Anyway, this is a Halloween song done done in the comically funky way only Jimmy Castor could deliver, proving that vampires and monsters love to get their groove on too. 2649 The Spooks - The Spook Walks

Image
From: Vampires, Cowboys, Spacemen, & Spooks: The Very Best of Joe Meek's Instrumentals ; Year: (1960s); Genre: Instrumental Rock It's amazing to think that tomorrow is Halloween; this month has flown by for sure! Anyway, I felt like picking something appropriate for the holiday. Like its brothers and sisters on the album this is an instrumental in the surf-rock style with a definite spooky feeling about it, too bad it's so short. Ugh, sorry, the person who had it on YouTube deleted it and I don't want to change my pick. From: Sonic Attack ; Year: 1981; Genre: Space Rock/Progressive Rock It's one of those busy days again, so I'm picking one from one of my favourite bands. 2646 Cream - I Feel Free

Image
From: Fresh Cream ; Year: 1966; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Blues Rock It was a rather busy weekend and just last night was able to check the news and I learned of bassist extraordinaire Jack Bruce's passing away; he was 71 years old. A full writeup can be read here on BBC . As most will attest Jack Bruce was one of the most influential electric bassists of all time; and it's not too far of a stretch to say that every person to play a bass since he came on the scene in one way or another has been influenced by the man. Anyway, even though it's a couple of days late, I thought it would be apropos to pick a song with him playing, and it's a great one to boot. Hear I Feel Free on YouTube. 2644 Van Halen - Right Now

Image
From: For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge ; Year: 1991; Genre: Hard Rock Yesterday and this morning I had this Van Halen track running through my mind; I was genuinely surprised that I hadn't picked this song yet, so I'm remedying that one today. I've actually been huge fan of both Sammy Hagar and Van Halen and thus when he joined the band I was fine with it and even to this day love the music from that period. Anyway, this is one of the tracks from the last 20 years of the band that gets a lot of radio play, but still not as much as it did in the early 1990s, and it's still one of my favourites from the band. 2642 Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Like a Rock

Image
From: Like a Rock ; Year: 1986; Genre: Rock This was a song that took me a while to warm up to and it wasn't because of how it was oddly arranged or anything like that, but because of its use in advertizing. Even today it's still hard to hear this track without thinking of Chevrolet Trucks, but despite that it's still a great song. After listening to it a few times I came to like it; the sentimentality and roots rock feel of the track was a big draw. Hear Like a Rock on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Coasters- Poison Ivy My song pick two years ago today: Béla Fleck & the Flecktones - Earthling Parade My song pick three years ago today: Stuart Hamm - Kings of Sleep My song pick four years ago today: Steeleye Span - Lovely on the Water My song pick five years ago today: Crosby, Stills & Nash - Just a Song Before I Go My song pick six years ago today: Robert Mitchum - Ballad of Thunder Road My song pick seven years ago today: Blue Ö

Image
From: Agents of Fortune ; Year: 1976; Genre: Hard Rock I was thinking about a song to pick today and for some reason Blue Öyster Cult seemed perfect for the occasion. Image
From: Paranoid ; Year: 1970; Genre: Metal I had another song in mind today, but I felt like picking something from Black Sabbath instead; lo and behold I realized I hadn't picked this epic track yet, so I am. This is one of the band's most popular songs and probably anybody with access has probably heard at some time or multiple times. Hear Paranoid on YouTube. Image
From: Strange Days ; Year: 1967; Genre: Psychedelic Rock It's been a pretty good day and I was in the mood to listen to something from The Doors. This is one of my favourite albums from the band and I've always liked this song quite a bit; that guitar riff which drives the song is nice. Hear People Are Strange on YouTube. Image
From: Street Scene (single) Year: 1971; Genre: Funk I'm still keeping my streak of Funky Fridays going with today's pick. 2635 Black Flag - Annihilate This Week

Image
From: Loose Nut ; Year: 1985; Genre: Punk/Metal For quite a while now I've been meaning to pick a track from Black Flag. For being a "punk band" I've found that they've had a lot more on the ball musically than any I've heard in the genre; it's simply interesting sounding music. Even though it's heading into being 30 years old, their material still sounds incredibly fresh. Hear Annihilate This Week on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) My song pick two years ago today: Hawkwind - Hurry on Sundown My song pick three years ago today: Steeleye Span - New York Girls My song pick four years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Living in the U.S.A. Image
From: Alien Love Secrets ; Year: 1995; Genre: Rock I had another song in mind this morning, but some of Steve Vai's songs, including this one running through my mind. Image
From: Wasting Light ; Year: 2011; Genre: Alternative Rock I had Foo Fighters on the brain this morning and you know what that means. Image
From: Eat a Peach ; Year: 1972; Genre: Blues Rock/Southern Rock I woke up this morning with Allman Brothers' music running through my mind and it also felt like a great day to pick one of their songs as well. Anyway, this album has really no weak tracks at all, which is probably one of the reasons that it's so legendary; this song is no different than its brothers and sisters, it's great. This is of course a cover of the Muddy Waters tune in their signature southern rock/blues sound. Hear Trouble No More on YouTube. 2631 Procol Harum - Homburg

Image
From: Procol Harum ; Year: 1967; Genre: Progressive Rock For the last few days I've had a bunch of Procol Harum's music running through my mind off and on; as per usual I'm taking it as a sign I should pick one of their songs. Anyway, this was more or less the second hit from the band following up their monster hit Whiter Shade of Pale, and it also followed almost the same formula too, but not as well. All in all it's a pretty good second hit for the band. Hear Homburg on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Faces - Stay With Me My song pick two years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Oh Susannah My song pick three years ago today: Miles Davis - Freedom Jazz Dance My song pick four years ago today: Boston - More Than a Feeling My song pick five years ago today: David Bowie - Suffragette City My song pick six years ago today: Slade - Mama Weer All Crazee Now My song pick seven years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Prologue
