3606. Jethro Tull - Driving Song

Image
From: Living in the Past ; Year: 1972 (1969); Genre: Blues Rock Yesterday I was on the road for most of the day or at least away from home and I had this track on my mind; thought I'd go ahead and pick it. This was originally a single release from the end of their time as a hard rock blues band and was added onto the compilation album Living in the Past with many of their other singles at the time that were without an album. Driving Song is a definite blues written around a triplet on a driving bass line provided by the late-great Glenn Cornick. Hear Driving Song on YouTube. 3605. Roman Holliday - Don't Try to Stop It

Image
From: Cookin' on the Roof ; Year: 1983; Genre: New Wave/Rockabilly Whilst working on the yard yesterday I had this song pop into my mind and continue to stay there. I have not heard it for over 30 years or thereabouts, so I don't know where it came from; but I'll take it as a sign I should pick it. I had to do a search to find the band that did it, but they sound, at least in this song, like a new wave Stray Cats to my ears. Apparently Roman Holliday only had a couple of hits with this being the big one. Hear Don't Try to Stop It on YouTube. From: Ace ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock Another Memorial Day here, so you few that read this blog regularly know wot that means: more Grateful Dead. 3603. The Allman Brothers Band - Not My Cross to Bear

Image
From: The Allman Brothers Band ; Year: 1969; Genre: Blues Rock/Southern Rock Gregg Allman, founding member, singer, songwriter, and keyboardist of the band of his and his already departed brother Duane's namesake passed away yesterday. It seems that I've been making too many picks like this lately, especially of bands and artists that I adore. He was taken at the young age of 69; definitely his music will live on for centuries to come. Anyway, this early song I thought exemplified his vocal style with that was so soulful voice. Image
From: Starless and Bible Black ; Year: 1974; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock Without a doubt this is some amazing headphone music; almost 12 minutes of musical bliss. 3600. Ozric Tentacles - Spacebase

Image
From: The Floor's Too Far Away ; Year: 2006; Genre: Progressive Rock Made it to another "odometer rollover;" I thought a good epic, and bombastic song would be called for as a pick. Image
From: Dystopia ; Year: 2016; Genre: Thrash Metal Was in the mood for some Megadeth today; it just felt right. This rather pretty and heavy instrumental off their most recent Dystopia album. 3598. Savatage - Chance

Image
From: Handful of Rain ; Year: 1994; Genre: Progressive Metal/Symphonic Metal This is one of those songs that no matter how many times I've heard it, it brings chills and goosebumps; it's that well composed and put together. 3596. Alice in Chains - What The Hell Have I

Image
From: Last Action Hero (Soundtrack) ; Year: 1993; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge Been listening to a bunch of '90s "grunge" since Chris Cornell passed away. It's amazing to think about all the frontmen to those bands who have died over the years; sadly Lane Staley was among those who left the world too soon. Anyway, this was one of two songs Alice in Chains did for the film Last Action Hero ; it definitely showcases their sound and style at the time greatly. Hear What The Hell Have I on YouTube. 3591-3. Queen - Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley

Image
From: Sheer Heart Attack ; Year: 1974; Genre: Hard Rock Same story, different band, different day. Sheer Heart Attack is an album that doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. These three songs make a medley, so I thought it would be apropos to pick all three. It's an amazing piece in many ways; even the band Dream Theater thought so and covered it. If nothing else it's great to hear Roger Taylor sing lead on Tenement Funster . Hear Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley on YouTube. Image
From: Elysium ; Year: 2011; Genre: Progressive Metal/Power Metal At the point I was thinking of a perfect song to pick today some music from Stratovarius just popped into my mind. 3589. Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction

Image
From: Countdown to Extinction ; Year: 1992; Genre: Thrash Metal Got in the mood for some Megadeth this morning and it has yet to subside. I was seriously surprised to see that I had not picked this song yet; I mean, Symphony of Destruction is one of their signature songs and one of my absolute favourites from their catalogue. 3588. Gentle Giant - Words From The Wise

Image
From: Giant for a Day ; Year: 1978; Genre: Rock Realized that I had not picked one from Gentle Giant for a while now; this somewhat pop departure from the band kind of seemed like a good pick for today. The sound is similar to Electric Light Orchestra in my opinion, which I think was a great juxtaposition of their normal sound. Hear Words From the Wise on YouTube. 3587. Blue Öyster Cult - Don't Turn Your Back

Image
From: Fire of Unknown Origin ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock This song was on my mind today; another one of my favourites from this album. I like most of the songs on Fire of Unknown Origin , so I guess it's not saying a lot I suppose; I usually play this one through all the way; album oriented rock for the win. Anyway, it has a very active and jazzy bass line it's written around, which gives it a nice bouncy feeling to go along with that BÖC sound. Hear Don't Turn Your Back on YouTube. 3586. Sammy Hagar - Heavy Metal

Image
From: Standing Hampton ; Year: 1982; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal Whilst thinking about which song to pick today this one came to mind. Most would probably remember it as the title track to the animated film Heavy Metal , but it's an excellent song in and of itself and is thus one of Sammy Hagar's bigger hits as well. Image
From: Now We Are Six ; Year: 1974; Genre: Folk Rock/Progressive Rock After listening to some of their music over the last few days I figured I'd pick another one from Steeleye Span. Image
From: Rupi's Dance ; Year: 2003; Genre: Progressive Rock/Folk Rock Was listening to this song yesterday and really enjoyed hearing it again; when I realized I had yet to pick it I knew I had today's pick. Rupi's Dance is another one of his songs written about one of his cats, which was a kitten at the time, now Rupi would be about 14; hope she's still alive and kicking.
