Image
From: Hall of the Mountain Grill ; Year: 1974; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Space Rock/Progressive Rock Had Hawkwind's epic Hall of the Mountain Grill album on my mind today, which is one of my top favourites from the band. 3730. Raspberries - I Wanna Be With You

Image
From: Fresh ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock/Pop I happened to notice that I had yet to pick one from this band yet; I thought for sure I did. I cannot even begin to remember how young I was when I first heard their hit I Wanna Be With You , but my Dad listened to it a whole lot whilst growing up; I have a lot of memories attached to their music as a consequence. This is another deceptively complex song wrapped up in pop trappings, but is fun to play nevertheless. Hear I Wanna Be With You on YouTube. 3729. Wild Turkey - Butterfly

Image
From: Battle Hymn ; Year: 1971; Genre: Hard Rock Have been meaning on picking this song for the last little bit and finally gotten around to it. When I put Battle Hymn on I still cannot believe how criminal it was that the record, (or the band for that matter), never got the attention it deserved. Anyway, Butterfly is a perfect opening track for some album oriented rock; it hits fast and hard right out of the gate. Those twin guitars playing lead along with the bass make it a really strong track. Hear Butterfly on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Waylander - Lámh Dearg My song pick two years ago today: Bob James - Main Theme From Star Trek: The Motion Picture My song pick three years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song My song pick four years ago today: Buddy Holly & The Crickets- It's So Easy My song pick five years ago today: Johnny Cash - My Grandfather's Clock My song pick six years ago today: Ralfe Band - 1500 Years My song pick

Image
From: The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other ; Year: 1970; Genre: Hard Rock/Progressive Rock/Progressive Metal Heard some of their music come on my player whilst out and about; it got me thinking about picking another one of their songs. White Hammer is a rather heavy piece of progressive rock, both musically and lyrically, bordering on and even venturing into heavy metal at times throughout the song. Hear White Hammer on YouTube. 3726. Funkadelic - Phunklords

Image
From: Connections & Disconnections ; Year: 1980; Genre: Funk/Soul It's Friday again, you know wot that means: a Funky Friday pick. Connections & Disconnections is an album that sits in a bit of an odd place because of the fact that it was recorded without any involvement of George Clinton. In fact it was the three singers for Parliament, Fuzzy Haskins, Calvin Simon, and Grady Thomas, going it alone with their own band with the belief they could use the Funkadelic name, which ended up in litigation. With all that being said, I really like this album and the material on it; especially this song. Hear Phunklords on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - When Time Stood Still My song pick two years ago today: Soundgarden - Loud Love My song pick three years ago today: Joachim Witt - Das Jüngste Gericht My song pick four years ago today: Carmen - The Gypsies My song pick five years ago today: Rosanne Cash - Seven Year A

3724. Big Country - Fields of Fire (400 Miles)

Image
From: The Crossing ; Year: 1983; Genre: Celtic Rock Dang, it's been quite some time since I last picked one from Big Country: (pick #120); that's almost 10 years and over 3500 songs! 3723. Van Halen - Best of Both Worlds

Image
From: 5150 ; Year: 1986; Genre: Hard Rock I know it's considered blasphemy to most Van Halen fans, (or at least the hard core ones), or so it would seem. But I prefer Sammy Hagar's vocals with the band as well as a lot of the material during his tenure. To me 5150 has never felt dated, even 40 years on. Best of Both Worlds is one of my favourites and definitely a classic. Hear Best of Both Worlds on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Santo & Johnny - Deep Purple My song pick two years ago today: Dire Straits - Expresso Love My song pick three years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Power My song pick four years ago today: Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine My song pick five years ago today: Richard Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries My song pick six years ago today: Joachim Witt - Du Teufel My song pick seven years ago today: Karussell - Nämlich Bin Ich Glücklich My song pick eight years ago today: Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams My s

3722. Rush - Kid Gloves

Image
From: Grace Under Pressure ; Year: 1984; Genre: Progressive Rock Last night I had a lot of songs from Grace Under Pressure on my mind; after checking I noted that this is the only song off the album I've yet to pick. So, I guess that means that I'm done with one of my favourite Rush albums; at least they have many more to go. Anywho, Kid Gloves has that mid 1980s sound; it, and the other songs on the record were the beginning of it; to many other fans' chagrin. Hear Kid Gloves on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Blood, Sweat & Tears - Spinning Wheel My song pick two years ago today: Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots - Disco Duck My song pick three years ago today: Ian Anderson - New Blood, Old Veins My song pick four years ago today: Lenny Kravitz - I Love the Rain My song pick five years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - September My song pick six years ago today: Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic My song pick seven years ago today: T

3721. Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal

Image
From: Bad ; Year: 1987; Genre: R&B/Funk/Pop This is definitely a fun song to play along with; that simple, yet very effective bass line/riff sells it as a major hook. I remember Smooth Criminal a lot; it was heard all over the place, or so it would seem; a classic '80s track. Hear Smooth Criminal on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Triumph - A Minor Prelude/All The Way My song pick two years ago today: Collective Soul - December My song pick three years ago today: Steeleye Span - Hard Times of Old England My song pick four years ago today: The Kinks - This Time Tomorrow My song pick five years ago today: Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge My song pick six years ago today: Heart - How Deep It Goes My song pick seven years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Flying High Again My song pick eight years ago today: Amon Amarth feat. 3720. Cybotron - Parameters of Consciousness

Image
From: Cybotron ; Year: 1976; Genre: Electronica/Progressive Rock I suppose this one could be better categorized as a "soundscape" rather than a song; but there's a lot to listen to and a great deal of music to be heard. 3718. Victor Wooten - I Saw God

3716. Fairport Convention - Dirty Linen

Image
From: Full House ; Year: 1970; Genre: Folk Rock/Progressive Rock This is one I've been meaning to pick for a bit now; it's an electric folk rock arrangement of a traditional medley. This is an exposition of the playing of one of my top favourite bassists, Dave Pegg. Dirty Linen is one of those songs you have to marvel at, not only on the bass, but all the instruments, but for a bassist this is one you have to listen to. Hear Dirty Linen on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Rush - Middletown Dreams My song pick two years ago today: Guns N' Roses - Get in the Ring My song pick three years ago today: War - Galaxy My song pick four years ago today: Savatage - Man in the Mirror My song pick five years ago today: Styx - Snowblind My song pick six years ago today: Edvard Grieg - Op. 46 - In the Hall of the Mountain King My song pick seven years ago today: Ben E. 3715. Sandy Denny - Solo

Image
From: Like An Old Fashioned Waltz ; Year: 1974; Genre: Progressive Rock/Folk Rock Was checking out a bunch of Sandy Denny's work the other day; I've always been a fan of her singing/playing. 3714. Automat - The Rise

Image
From: Automat ; Year: 1978; Genre: Electronica/Disco/Progressive Rock Here's another one I recently discovered that I found very interesting and thought I'd choose it for today's song. Automat apparently was a duo from Italy that sadly only released a single album, but it was a great effort. This is all very much in that mid to late '70s electronic synth sound and is one of those songs that is very interesting musically whilst being very danceable. Hear The Rise on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery My song pick two years ago today: Pink Floyd - High Hopes My song pick three years ago today: Megadeth - 99 Ways to Die My song pick four years ago today: Bachman & Turner - That's What It Is My song pick five years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Harbour Lights My song pick six years ago today: Stone Temple Pilots - Plush My song pick seven years ago today: Eddie Floyd - Knock on Wood My song pick

3713. Steeleye Span - Lowlands of Holland

Image
From: Hark! The Village Wait ; Year: 1970; Genre: Folk Rock Steeleye Span's debut album came into my mind today. This is a traditional piece reworked in their electric folk sensibilities. Whilst the original song for the most part are about a war separating two lovers with the soldier getting killed; this version is less militaristic. It still tells a great story of lovers being separated by death and such, but is more about them and less about the death. Hear Lowlands of Holland on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Mr. Bungle - Squeeze Me Macaroni My song pick two years ago today: The Delfonics - Funny Feeling My song pick three years ago today: Alice in Chains - Heaven Beside You My song pick four years ago today: Paris - Red Rain My song pick five years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Destiny Calls My song pick six years ago today: The Who - Going Mobile My song pick seven years ago today: Louis Armstrong - The Blues are Brewin' My song pick

3711. Blancmange - Lose Your Love

Image
From: Believe You Me ; Year: 1985; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop I hadn't heard Blancmange's Lose Your Love in over 25 years and it popped into my mind; of course I did not know the name of it or whom did it, so I had to do some scrounging. 3710. Harlequin - Innocence

Image
From: Love Crimes ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock Nothing was coming to mind this morning when thinking about which song to pick; just drawing a complete blank. However, finally this rock band from Winnipeg, Canada, came to mind; it's a while since I chose one of their tracks. This one reminds me a lot of the supergroup Damn Yankees ; it has a very similar sound to their material in my opinion, or would it be the other way around since this one's older? Hear Innocence on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Theme from 'The Dukes of Hazzard' (Good Ol' Boys) My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Up To Me My song pick three years ago today: Jethro Tull - A Time For Everything My song pick four years ago today: Megadeth - Wanderlust My song pick five years ago today: Pearls Before Swine - The Surrealist Waltz My song pick six years ago today: Queen - Spread Your Wings My song pick seven years ago today: Rush - Working Man My song pic

3709. Dream Theater - Bridges in the Sky

Image
From: A Dramatic Turn of Events ; Year: 2011; Genre: Progressive Metal I've been meaning to pick one from Dream Theater for a while now, and am finally getting around to it. For some reason I thought I'd revisit their A Dramatic Turn of Events album once again; this is one of the longer compositions on the disc and I love the opening section with the of world music and other sounds, which only adds to the exotic nature of the song. Hear Bridges in the Sky on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Wolfmother - The Eye of the Beholder My song pick two years ago today: Huey Lewis & the News - Jacob's Ladder My song pick three years ago today: Sho Nuff - Funkasize You My song pick four years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Mountain Jam My song pick five years ago today: Steve Vai - I Know You're Here My song pick six years ago today: Earthless - Godspeed My song pick seven years ago today: Big Star - Thirteen My song pick eight years

3708. Steely Dan - Aja

Image
From: Aja ; Year: 1977; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Rock Yesterday I got the sad news that Walter Becker , (one of the two geniuses behind Steely Dan), has passed away at the early age of 67 ; he will definitely be missed. Steely Dan has always been one of the bands I hold in high regard and have been a big influence on me. I thought it best to pick one of my favourites off of most likely their biggest hit album. Like the rest of their body of work, this song was recorded and arranged to a fine perfection as to the sound they wanted to get. Hear Aja on YouTube. From: Club Ninja ; Year: 1985; Genre: Hard Rock Had BÖC on my mind today yet again and thus I'm picking another one. 3706. Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 375 - Chorale Lobt Gott, ihr Christen, allzugleich

Image
BWV 375 ; Year: Unknown ; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Making a proper "Bach" pick a day late because of yesterday's Funky Friday pick , which was also Bach related; you can never have too much J.S. Bach in my opinion. Hear Chorale Lobt Gott, ihr Christen, allzugleich on YouTube. 3705. Schefczyk - Play Bach Funky

Image
From: CelloPathie ; Year: 2003; Genre: Contemporary Classical Well, I made it a full decade of blogging about music today, and without missing a day. I tell ya, it's hard to believe that 10 years ago, (September 1st, 2007), I started this blog on MySpace and two years later migrated to Blogger, where I've been ever since. I was never sure I'd make it this far or where I'll eventually stop, but I don't see me stopping anytime soon; I have to keep my couple of regular readers happy after all. Anyway, as I said, it's my song-a-day blog's tenth anniversary, where I usually pick a song from J.S. Bach, but is also a Friday, and I've been making Funky Friday picks consecutively and would also hate to break my streak, which stands at 207 counting today. So it took me a while to find one that would fit both criteria because I'd already chosen Walter Murphy's " Toccata and Funk in D-Minor ," but eventually I found this one, which is a medle
