Image
From: Crimes of Passion ; Year: 1980; Genre: Hard Rock Had a few songs in mind today, but when getting ready to pick I had some music from this album on my mind; I finally settled on this hard rocker originally from The Young Rascals. 3322. Spooky Tooth - Better By You, Better By Me

Image
From: Spooky Two ; Year: 1969; Genre: Hard Rock Realized there was another band yet that I had not pick a song from that I like, so I'm rectifying that today. Most probably remember Judas Priest's cover of this song more, and it's excellent, but so is the original. Very bluesy, soulful, and dark this one; a treat to the ears. 3321. Fairport Convention - Fotheringay

Image
From: What We Did on Our Holidays ; Year: 1969; Genre: Folk Rock/Progressive Rock Earlier I accidentally opened up iTunes on my computer and it just started playing this album; if that's not a sign as to the album I should be choosing a song from I don't know what is. Anyway, this is one written by the late-great Sandy Denny and is it a beautiful song. The mix of both electric and acoustic instruments as well as her vocals just make this one a sound to be heard. 3320. Cheap Trick - Surrender

Image
From: Heaven Tonight ; Year: 1978; Genre: Hard Rock/Pop I have no reason for it, like usual, but really felt like listening to something from Cheap Trick today. It's always amazing to hear the band and the way they can take very light lyrics and just ramp them up to notches unknown; truly unique and great musicians, and this song exemplifies it. Hear Surrender on YouTube. Hear the epic Cheap Trick at Budokan version on YouTube. Image
From: On The Border ; Year: 1974; Genre: Rock Been a stressful weekend thus far and God knows I need some calming music to settle myself down. 3317-18. Judas Priest - Battle Hymn/One Shot at Glory

Image
From: Painkiller ; Year: 1990; Genre: Metal The other day I was playing around with the video game Brütal Legend , which is an incredibly fun game based around the genre of heavy metal, and has a lot of amazing songs on its soundtrack; this is among them. This these two tracks close out the album that would at the time be the last album from Judas Priest to feature Rob Halford for about a decade. He does a great job as ever lending his tremendous voice; for me, the guitars are also one of the main draws. Hear Battle Hymn/One Shot at Glory on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Yes - Tempus Fugit My song pick two years ago today: Louis Armstrong and His Hot Seven - Heebie Jeebies My song pick three years ago today: Van Halen - Dance the Night Away My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Whistler My song pick five years ago today: Maurice Ravel - M.19 - Pavane for a Dead Princess My song pick six years ago today: Black Label Society - Stillborn

3316. KC and the Sunshine Band - (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty

Image
From: Part 3 ; Year: 1976; Genre: Disco/Funk Friday snuck up on me again, so it's another Funky Friday as it were. I had a couple of their songs on my mind off and on over the last couple weeks and since I hadn't picked one of KC and the Sunshine Band's tracks yet, I figured it was a good time. Nothing quite like this for some good old fashioned butt shaking whilst this song is playing. Hear (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty on YouTube. 3314. The Doors - The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)

Image
From: L.A. Woman ; Year: 1971; Genre: Blues Rock/Psychedelic Rock For some reason, as I sat down to make today's song of the day choice, this rather interesting one from The Doors. I've always kind of liked this song, mix of heavy blues rock with Jim Morrison's very interesting and image-laden poetry. Hear The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat) on YouTube. 3313. Foreigner - Juke Box Hero

Image
From: 4 ; Year: 1981; Genre: Hard Rock While visiting a local theme park yesterday I heard this song coming from one of the attractions; it felt like a great day for some Foreigner, so why not? I was actually surprised that I have yet to pick this one, which is one of my favourites from the band. I just love that hard-driving synth, which was apparently provided by one Thomas Dolby, whose career was about to breakthrough. It's sad that Foreigner softened their music a lot after 4 , but they still had a few I suppose, but nothing like this album/song. Hear Juke Box Hero on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: AC/DC - Touch Too Much My song pick two years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Find Out About Love My song pick three years ago today: Hawkwind - Orgone Accumulator My song pick four years ago today: Robert Schumann - Op. 17 - Fantasie in C My song pick five years ago today: Muse - Supermassive Black Hole My song pick six years ago toda

3312. The Trammps - Rubber Band

Image
From: The Legendary Zing Album ; Year: 1975; Genre: Soul I heard this piece of Philadelphia soul yesterday and it has stuck in my mind ever since, so I'm picking it. 3311. The Lively Ones - Surf Rider

Image
From: Surf Rider! ; Year: 1963; Genre: Surf Guitar Rock Felt like listening to some instrumental surf rock today; I decided on picking this hit from the earlier part of the surf crazy in music. Beautiful music and awesome melody with some monster hooks in it. Hear Surf Rider on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Rhythm Machine - You Got Action, You Got Me My song pick two years ago today: Megadeth - Liar My song pick three years ago today: Weather Report - Second Sunday in August My song pick four years ago today: AC/DC - Thunderstruck My song pick five years ago today: Victor Wooten - Norwegian Wood My song pick six years ago today: Hawkwind - Love in Space My song pick seven years ago today: Les Paul & Mary Ford - The World is Waiting for the Sunrise My song pick eight years ago today: Aerosmith - Cryin'

3310. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - A Time and a Place

Image
From: Tarkus ; Year: 1971; Genre: Progressive Rock Been insanely busy the last couple of days, so I'm being forced to make a quick pick of sorts. This is one of EL&P's more "radio friendly" songs, clocking in at just over 3 minutes and is one that will not upset the "pop snobs..." too much maybe. :P Hear A Time and a Place on YouTube. 3309. Rage Against the Machine - Guerrilla Radio

Image
From: The Battle of Los Angeles ; Year: 1999; Genre: Funk Metal/Rap Metal I felt like going to more of a different direction for this Funky Friday pick, which, if my counting is correct, this is my 153rd consecutive Funky Friday. Anyway, getting into the funk/metal stylings of Rage Against the Machine; a very good track for today. Hear Guerilla Radio on YouTube. Image
From: For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge ; Year: 1991; Genre: Hard Rock With all the early 1990s nostalgia going around right now, (even drank a Crystal Pepsi again after they revived the brand), which is a reason I had this Van Halen album on my mind lately; I heard it a lot back then. Anyway, this is one of the latter singles off the album and definitely one to bring that nostalgia back. Hear The Dream is Over on YouTube. Image
From: Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell ; Year: 1993; Genre: Hard Rock I had this track on my mind today for some reason; thought I should probably choose it. 3304. Faith No More - Last Cup of Sorrow

Image
From: Album of the Year ; Year: 1997; Genre: Alternative Metal Whilst out early this morning I had some Faith No More come on the radio; as usual, it got me to pick one of their songs. After perusing their newer material I ran across this track; seemed absolutely perfect for today. Hear Last Cup of Sorrow on YouTube. 3303. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Image
From: Out of Our Heads ; Year: 1965; Genre: Hard Rock I was talking about The Rolling Stones the other day with a family member and it got me thinking about their music again. I find it kind of funny that I've gone this long and not picked Satisfaction... it seems to be something that happens a lot with band's bigger hits; the longer I go I seem to think that I've already picked the big hits, but many times it's not the case. Anyway, this is probably one of the most iconic songs from not only the band, but I'd hazard to say it's an icon of the 20th century. Hear (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Sword - Apocryphon My song pick two years ago today: The Doors - Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar) My song pick three years ago today: Slade - Slam the Hammer Down My song pick four years ago today: Stahlhammer - Mensch My song pick five years ago today: Rush - Afterimage My song pick six years ago today:

3302. The Temptations - War

Image
From: Psychedelic Shack ; Year: 1970; Genre: Funk/Soul/Motown When I was doing some outdoor work I had this one pop into my mind and not go away, so I'd figured I go ahead and make it my 152nd Funky Friday pick in a row. Most would probably remember the Edwin Starr version of this anti-war song, which is definitely a great tune, but most don't realize that it was not the original. The Temptations recorded it, but was not released as a single because Motown didn't want to turn off The Temptations more conservative followers, so they went with Edwin Starr instead, which became a smash hit. In this version I love the vocals and what they're doing both in the lead and background, which is simply amazing and the music is excellently done as always. Hear War on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Eric Stuart Band - Lipstick & Barbed Wire My song pick two years ago today: Band of Horses - A Little Biblical My song pick three years ago today: Kansas

3301. The Flying Burrito Brothers - Sweet Desert Childhood

Image
From: Flying Again ; Year: 1975; Genre: Country/Rock It is one of those days where I just picked something without thinking about it and happened upon The Flying Burrito Brothers. This is one off of their first album after the death of Graham Parsons and the band's reformation; it's more of a mellow and wistful song. Hear Sweet Desert Childhood on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Cream - Sunshine of Your Love My song pick two years ago today: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit My song pick three years ago today: Stone Temple Pilots - Lady Picture Show My song pick four years ago today: Ludwid van Beethoven - Op.125 - Symphony No.9 in D-Minor My song pick five years ago today: Stormwarrior - Heading Northe My song pick six years ago today: Cab Calloway - The Jumpin' Jive (Hep-Hep!) 3300. 30 Seconds to Mars - Night of the Hunter

Image
From: This is War ; Year: 2009; Genre: Alternative Rock Another "rollover" pick with it now being 3300 songs that I've blogged about; thought I needed something fitting and 30 Seconds to Mars immediately came to mind. I hadn't picked one from the band for some time, so now is a good time as ever. Plus it gives me a chance to pick up and listen to their This is War album, which is quite a bit better than the other material of theirs I've listened to prior; this is probably my favourite track thus far. 3299. Napoleon XIV - They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa!

Image
From: They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa! ; Year: 1966; Genre: Comedy I heard this little piece for the first time in quite a while last night and I thought it would be funny to pick it. They're Coming to Take Me Away ... is definitely a funny one and the recording techniques and use of the trimeter in the syncopated vocals really sell the feeling of insanity. Although, it's quite an annoying song if someone plays it more than a couple of times. Hear They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa! on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Hawkwind - Magnu My song pick two years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Rockaria! 3298. Eurythmics - Here Comes the Rain Again

Image
From: Touch ; Year: 1983; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop After seeing the title to this song I immediately had it playing through my mind; I have to say it definitely brings back memories. The Eurythmics are probably one of the bands that imprinted the electronic sounds of the early 1980s on my mind. I'm actually kind of surprised I had not picked one of their songs yet; I thought I did. Anyway, I've always loved the way they balanced the overall melancholy feelings and lyrics with the stronger, and powerful aspects as well. Hear Here Comes the Rain Again on YouTube.
