2988 Mary Hopkin - Those Were the Days

Image
From: Post Card ; Year: 1969; Genre: Folk Rock The other day my dad was showing me some interesting music; this was that in particular caught my attention. Fascinatingly, this song has quite a history; it was originally composed in the early part of the 1900s by Russian composer Boris Fomin under the title "Dorogoi Dlinnoyu" (By the Long Road). Eugene Raskin later wrote English lyrics to the tune as "Those Were the Days" and apparently one Paul McCartney heard him and his wife playing it in a club and liked it. Subsequently, they had singer Mary Hopkin, who was signed to The Beatles' Apple label, cover the song and it became a pretty big hit. Anyway, not a bad song at all; the choice of chords and their progression as well as the meter changes make this one a really neat track. Hear Those Were the Days on YouTube. 2987 Asia - Open Your Eyes

Image
From: Alpha ; Year: 1983; Genre: Rock/Progressive Rock While not quite as good as their debut album, their second offering, Alpha , has a few gems; this being one of them. The more and more I listen to it the more Alpha is growing on me. Hear Open Your Eyes on YouTube. 2986 Neil Young - This Note's For You

Image
From: This Note's For You ; Year: 1988; Genre: Rock As normally happens with me and how I start many of my posts, I had Neil Young on my mind yesterday and into today, so I'm picking one of his songs. 25 years ago this song was quite a bit funnier and made much more sense, but you can get the overall gist of what he was singing about. Many of references have to do with some zeitgeists of the time the song was written/released, mostly advertising that different companies were famous for at the time, i.e. Budweiser Beer's "This Bud's for you," from which the song's title was inspired amongst others. Anyway, it's still a fun song, even today. Watch the video to This Note's For You on YouTube. 2985 John Denver - Let it Be

Image
From: Poems, Prayers, and Promises ; Year: 1971; Genre: Folk Rock For no reason whatsoever I really felt like listening to some of John Denver's music. As with most of the time, I first turned to his Poems, Prayers, and Promises album. This is of course John Denver's cover of the immensely popular hit by The Beatles of which he was a huge fan. I really like his sparsely acoustical arrangement that matches up quite nicely with his clear and powerful vocals. Hear John Denver's version of Let it Be on YouTube. 2984 Jon Oliva's Pain - The Evil Beside You

Image
From: Maniacal Renderings ; Year: 2006; Genre: Heavy Metal/Power Metal I had some of Jon Oliva's music going on in my head this morning, so I thought I'd go ahead and pick one. This one, of course, comes from after the demise of Savatage, but is essentially the exact same sound. I love how this one starts with the lighter acoustic sound with the great harmonies backing up and then launches into full-blown metal in the signature JOP/Savatage styling; of course the lyrics and their delivery are incredible and heavy throughout. Hear The Evil Beside You on YouTube. 2982 Ian Anderson - Heavy Metals

Image
From: Homo Erraticus ; Year: 2014; Genre: Progressive Rock/Folk Rock I happened to hear this neat little piece the other day and it's been on my mind off and on since, so I figured I would choose it for today. What I love most about this song is the arrangement; it's basically a vocal and single acoustic guitar with very sparse accompaniment, but one piece of accompaniment that stick out is the percussion, where they more or less with an xylophone or an instrument similar bring forth the feeling/atmosphere of a blacksmith hammering away at his trade, which works amazingly. In the grander scheme of the concept album that it is part of this one fits in toward the beginning basically heralding in the Iron Age and what humans' mastery of metal and technology would lead to in both wonder and terror. Hear Heavy Metals on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Yes - The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun) My song pick two years ago today: Yes - Perpetual Change My s

2981 Max Roach - Mr. X

Image
From: +4 ; Year: 1956; Genre: Hard Bop Jazz Since listening to a bunch of his music yesterday when on the road, I've had a great deal of drummer and composer extraordinaire Max Roach's music on my mind. This fun track starts out very strong, backs off slightly and comes back at you. I love the way the different instruments play off of one another in this one; it's definitely Hard Bop Jazz at its best. Hear Mr. X on YouTube. 2980 Soundgarden - Loud Love

Image
From: Louder than Love ; Year: 1989; Genre: Alternative Metal I had some Soundgarden, and as I seem to always do, I wanted to pick one of their songs too. This is one of the lead tracks from the album and essentially the title track as well. I've always loved the raw energy on this album, and this song has it in spades. Hear Loud Love on YouTube. 2979 Three Dog Night - Mama Told Me Not To Come

Image
From: It Ain't East ; Year: 1970; Genre: Rock I had some of their music on my mind since yesterday evening, so I thought I'd take it as a sign to pick one of their songs. Not only have I not picked this track, which is one of my favourites from the band, but I haven't picked one from the band for over three years. Anyway, this rather funky cover originally from Randy Newman is probably one of the band's biggest hits. The bass, drums and keys drive the song mostly, and even though the song has odd meters and meter changes the listener really doesn't notice it unless you're paying attention. It really matches up quite well with the lyrics, which of course, depict from a first-person point of view, a sheltered individual's first encounter with a wild party. Hear Mama Told Me Not To Come on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Pearl Jam - Sirens My song pick two years ago today: Carmen - Daybreak My song pick three years ago today: Rush - F

2978 Ten Years After - Let the Sky Fall

Image
From: A Space in Time ; Year: 1971; Genre: Blues Rock Well, it's another one of those days where a definite song pick idea is alluding me, but I didn't want to just go to my queue either. So anyway, finally some music from Ten Years After started playing in my head, and I thought I would go along with it. This is another great song off of one of their best albums. 2977 Dire Straits - Expresso Love

Image
From: Making Movies ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock I had this album, Making Movies , on my mind a lot yesterday and thus decided a song from it should be my pick for today. This was one of the minor hits from this album and has that great smooth, hard-edged sound the band is known for. Great song. Hear Expresso Love on YouTube. 2976 Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots - Disco Duck

Image
From: Disco Duck (single); Year: 1976; Genre: Disco/Comedy Okay, technically this is another one that's not "true funk," but it still has a real funky beat and funk is its base. Anyway, this is a very fun novelty song by that cashed in on the disco craze of the late 1970s. Even to this day it's still fun to hear, albeit not a lot. Hear Disco Duck on YouTube. 2974 Yes - No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed

Image

2973 Egg - Fugue in D-Minor

Image
From: Egg ; Year: 1970; Genre: Progressive Rock I'm drawing an absolute blank for today, so I'm picking one from my queue of bands in the backlog that I've been meaning to pick another one from. Anyway, here's treat for the ears from the early 1970s Prog-Rock band Egg rather than how many bands do when they cover this piece, instead of using the Toccata section they instead focused on the main Fugue section. You gotta love that organ/keyboard work combined with those drums and a modicum of funkiness. Hear Egg's take on Bach's Fugue in D-Minor on YouTube. 2972 Wild Turkey - Ballad of Chuck Stallion and the Mustangs

Image
From: Turkey ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock/Hard Rock After hearing them yesterday while out and about I decided on picking another one of their songs. From: Kung Fu Fighting (single) ; Year: 1974; Genre: Disco/Funk Continuing my streak of consecutive Funky Fridays today. As luck would have it last night this ultra popular track started playing in my mind and I knew I had to pick it today. Image
From: The Delfonics ; Year: 1970; Genre: Soul I'm still in a mood for something a bit more uplifting; for me personally Soul is one of the main genres that pulls me up and one of the best in the genre in my opinion has always been The Delfonics. 2966 Lobo - A Simple Man

Image
From: Of A Simple Man ; Year: 1972; Genre: Folk Rock/Pop I'm really in need of something upbeat and happy for today; I looked to none other than some '70s pop, which is always perfect for such situation. Anyway, this is the title track from Lobo's ever popular Of A Simple Man album. From: I'm a Man ; Year: 1967; Genre: Blues Rock In the mood for something with Steve Winwood in it on this Labour Day weekend. 2964 Jethro Tull - Up To Me

Image
From: Aqualung ; Year:1971; Genre: Progressive Rock/Blues Rock I was in the mood for some earlier 'Tull this morning and finally settled on this one. Up To Me has always to me seemed a bit strange amongst it's siblings on the album both musically and subject matter. The music is much mellower and more blues based with some sparsity, and lyrics are rather whimsical and filled with symbolism and Britishisms, but it's fun track nevertheless. Hear Up To Me on YouTube. 2961 Buffalo Springfield - Expecting to Fly

Image
From: Buffalo Springfield Again ; Year: 1967; Genre: Folk Rock/Symphonic Rock I heard some Buffalo Springfield music last night whilst I was out on the road and it's been in my mind since, so I'm picking one today. Anyway, this is a rather interesting song that actually only features Neil Young alone backed by orchestral music, which is arranged extremely well which makes a quite distinct and unique sound. Add to that the haunting and ambiguous lyrics and it becomes a real treat for the ears. Hear Expecting to Fly on YouTube. Back in 2007 on this day I started this blog on a social site called MySpace and in '09 I moved it here; it's getting hard to believe that I've been at this for eight years now. Anywho, this is an extremely beautiful motet piece for eight voices, and there's a good chance you've hear the melody to this song; it's quite memorable.
